Yikes!! Out of curiosity, what did you pay for that used A1? And is it still under warranty?

No, it's out out warranty. I don't use the wifi stuff, never tried it, probably never will. I haven't updated my several-month old A1 from FW 2.0 to 2.01 yet. I haven't tried the wifi on that one, don't even know how. I bought the used A1 here: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1855285/0?keyword=Sony,A1#16529522

Just in case, and when you do try. I think it could be important to delete your old Imaging Edge App from the phone prior to install and setting up the new Creators' App and account.

Also, If you already paired your A1 to the iPhone/Mobile previously w/ Imaging Edge and encounter BT connect issues when pairing again via Creators' App, try unpairing your camera from the iPhone via "Forget this Device" and then repairing anew via Creators' App.

Well I run both app's on the phone with no problem as I use the Creators app with my A7r5 and imaging edge with the A1 and RX100vii with no issues. Even if I did update to 2.01 I would want to keep the imaging app for use with the RX100vii

Excuse me, but why don't people who feel undecided about upgrading and are afraid of having problems with service go directly to the service center to upgrade their machine?
It is pointed out that upon delivery the operation of the wifi/bt module is found to be fully functional and, better yet a video is made to demonstrate.
If something goes wrong, the service center is obliged to intervene under warranty, even if the camera is no longer.

Unfortunately not so simple. I have spoken to Fixation in London who are Sony service agents suggesting exactly this and didn't get a clear answer as they sort of said that the camera could fail in the short time between the test and starting a firmware upgrade. I think they are wary of taking responsibility when they may not be covered by Sony Japan. I have now asked Pro support what would happen if I send the camera into them where I get free shipping, sensor clean and firmware check so what would happen if they check all is okay and then something comes up after upgrade

Yes. Run both apps as needed. My point is more for those experiencing or trouble shooting Creators' App connection issues. If my suggestion helps, Imaging Edge app can be reloaded afterwards.

Yes, that's a good idea for people who are still under warranty. Even those out of warranty should make a video showing full wireless functionality before the update, since Sony's stance on this is "You can't prove it was working before the update."

That is a fair price for a unit that is in spec and working correctly with the current firmware.

Pricing for a unit that is out of spec and not fully functional with the current firmware should reflect the cost of repair (~$1500 plus shipping, insurance, time and trouble) to bring it to full working order.

I see your point but there are some of us who just want to use the A1 to shoot some freaking birds and never touch the wifi stuff. If I worried about the wifi issues I would have bought a brand new one.

This could be a good opportunity for people such as yourself, who don't use the wireless features (and who are probably in the majority). You'll be able to buy the out of spec ones for $1500 less. For those, $2500-$3000 is a fair price.

You won't know what you got until you run the firmware update.

If I am not mistaken, your A1 has the Wi-Fi issue, I would be glad to take it off your hand for $2500 if you decide to sell it now.

Thank you, Douglas. I may take you up on that.

It looks like I already have a buyer for $3000. If it falls through, I’ll DM you.

I still think that the wifi problem if widespread can only pass for a defect that the house MUST recognize.
I think and hope that at the moment the situation is not clear in all service centers, but the best thing is to write to the various sites (DPR, SAR...) and highlight it by reporting the numbers.
Ultimately if Sony does not respond I find that there is every, but I say every basis for a class action (in my country impossible).

I must say that at the moment having a Sony A1 with Kasko policy still active and working with 2.01.....I could sell it for $8000!

Indeed it is and I am waiting to get clarification from Pro support. Luckily I see no great real world benefits for me as a stills only shooter with the upgrade so am not overly worried!

Mine is working after 2.01 as well... and I don't even use WiFi.

$2500-3000 A1? I'd buy that right away if the only defect is the wi-fi.

So would I as I don't use any Wifi or Bluetooth. I shoot tethered with a cord always and never send anything to my phone. I do feel horrible though that there are issues with this. Sony should jump to the plate and fix this stuff

I think the biggest mistake that Sony made, was trying to make a big splash with this firmware.
If they they would have added a piece at a time, over multiple firmwares, I would think that debugging would have been easier.

I haven't updated mine yet, I'm going on a photo trip soon, and although it may go well, I don't need the headache if it doesn't.
I've only had my a1 for a couple of months, so if anything does go wrong, I know who's going to repair it under warranty.

While waiting for a response from Japan I have had this from Sony Pro support UK (I had a new motherboard last year)
"Encountering a WiFi issue with a new mainboard would be unfortunate, but it's not possible to guarantee that this will not occur.

The new firmware introduces a detection mechanism for the Wi-Fi chipset. Should a user encounter a chipset failure on a version prior to this mechanism's implementation, the camera may fail to boot, become inoperable, display a System Error, or enter a boot loop.

Since your camera is functioning properly and you've indicated that the features available with firmware 2.01 do not interest you, we still recommend against updating your camera's software."
