p.3 #1 · A1 Firmware v 2.01 is out now. On the fence about installing it though. :)

I was one who didn't observe any difference in battery drain between 1.32 and 2.00, and I also use a battery grip all of the time. I even took my updated Sony A1 out for a half day of shooting the way I normally do, and it only used up 50% of one battery, identical to what I would have seen with 1.32. So I have no idea why some people were experiencing drain, but it was clearly *something* because too many have reported it and apparently it's been fixed?

Updating to 2.01 on my one body right now. I'm still keeping the other at 1.32.

Has anyone gone out and shot with 2.01 today? Curious if you've noticed any problems with AF for BIF?
I've read a report on another forum where he is having lots of trouble with Zone shooting fast BIF where he wasn't just yesterday at same location with 2.0.
I can't imagine Sony would have done anything to the AF when they were just trying to get a quick fix out for the connectivity issues (and maybe battery issue).

Yeah the battery drain is a mystery. I'm hoping 2.01 fixes what I was seeing.
I did double check and my camera had no issue with BT or WiFi connection so it wasn't directly related to cameras that had that issue.

It could also come down completely to how you shoot.
Those, who reported the highest increase in battery usage, said they have the camera on basically all the time and are actively using it to get the shot. That's quite different from typical, to me at least, usage of framing the shot for 10s, firing away a couple of shots and then letting the camera sleep until the next photo...

I did consider the sources and for the most part a few experienced users and/or forum regulars posted some dramatic/painful battery drain in ver 2.0. A few of those posts are what prompted me to dig in and check on my own v 2.0 Sony A1. But just like the network and bluetooth issues, seems I didn't have the dramatic battery drain issue either on my A1 @ v2.0. Now we hear from Colby this was in fact a known issue for some and not others. Holding breath for my v 2.01 battery tests 🤞🏼

To your point, using the A1's power saving at 30 mins settings is not something I would do unless for very specific reasons. But it is now something I will include in my v 2.01 battery tests.

And again, my A1 regardless of firmware version has always gone through batteries faster than all my previous Sony cameras that use the Sony Z battery and with my typical settings and use case.

I updated and so far no issues. Wish they'd of let us use the memory card method. I really wanted to try that. Better luck next time i guess

Next time ?
Unless further bugs are found I suspect this will be the last update for the a1.

I'm hoping they didn't rework the whole gui and make updates via SD card possible to just let it be the last but perhaps I'm just to optimistic..

Ver 2.01 preliminarily:

As I was already on A1 ver 2.0 with successful network and bluetooth services, I am happy to report network and bluetooth services continue to work correctly on ver 2.01 on my A1. Also, I was able to uploaded several more images direct from camera to my Creators' Cloud account.

So far, quick indoor ver 2.01 AF-S, AF-C tests with GMs 24, 35, 50/1.2, 85/1.4, 135, 24-70II and 70-200II seem to be as normal.

Aaaaah, good ol’ Sony and their update-via-pc-hacks!

I couldn’t even update from 1.32 to 1.35. Tried three times via Windows, it always worked in the past.

Realized that I probably had to do part of their job for them and did a full initialize of the camera. Updates went smooth (but slow) after that. Sigh…

I updated A1 firmware from version 1.32 -> 1.35 -> 2.01 and currently am working on regenerating “My Menu” settings. In doing so I am constantly scrolling through the main menu and I also have been switching the camera on and off a lot.

The problem I encountered now several times is that the A1 would not switch back on, sometimes not even after pulling out the 2 batteries out off the Sony battery grip and reinserting them. When replacing the batteries with fresh and fully loaded ones I noticed that the batteries I just pulled out felt warm to the touch. Waiting awhile before trying to switch the A1 camera back on so far has always been eventually successful. Before this firmware update I never ran into this problem before when building up “My Menu”.

I find this problem pretty bizarre.
Has anyone else ran into this issue?
TIA for a reply.

K-H.

It wouldn't surprise me though. It's pretty clear that they are trying to get the firmware architecture unified across the cameras, which is a plus for those of us that use multiple models, and a plus for them in terms of theoretically making it easier to manage a single code/firmware application architecture.

I also think a lot of this was all tied to their new "Creators Cloud" stuff and the ability to sell firmware upgrades/add-ons like the custom framing. That's a potential source of revenue for them going forward, so there was an obvious incentive there to get it done, even if there are no new updates going forward.

There would probably at least be one more update to enable the content authenticity stuff they announced a while ago.

To be honest if they want to add a few more features via FW update that requires purchase of a license, or comes included on the mark 2, I'd be fine with that (e.g. RAW precapture), and that would make a lot of sense IMO

I spent a few hours yesterday after doing the upgrade and experienced almost the exact same issues. I'm a bit concerned and hopefully can get out today and do a little shooting to see if all goes well.

I had some issues with mine yesterday when the a1 would not recognize the 200-600mm lens. After removing and re-mounting the issue went away. I don't recall this happening before.

Have you tried doing a full reset from the camera menu? I would give that a shot. Save the settings to a card to be safe and then reset.

So, what does it actually look like?
The camera does not want to turn on after you leave it off for some time?
Try looking into EVF, maybe it's only the LCD screen that remains dark...

Thank you j4nu, that’s not the case.
I always can hear a noise and feel a vibration when the camera is actually coming on.
That’s not the case when it stays dead off.
BTW I keep the eye sensor working correctly by cleaning it with ZEISS swaps when needed.
I may try to reset the camera after saving the settings to a memory card.

Thanks again for your suggestion, K-H.

Does anyone else's a1 hum…? My first a1 had this loud electrical hum, it was so bad it could be heard when I used the camera to record video. It was checked under warranty and had to be returned.

My current a1 still has the hum but its much less audible, but I think it got louder after going to v2.

My A1 is dead silent when it is on. I just tried pressing my ear against the camera and still heard nothing.

is that with lens on or no lens? I've never heard a peep from my camera, but if I have one of the lenses with OSS on it and I half depress the shutter I can hear the hum from the motors that drive the OSS system.
