p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mirex to Canon Eos Vignetting?

I'm on the verge of buying the Mirex Tilt/Shift adapter. I will be using Mamiya lenses on a Canon 6D. Does anyone have real life experience of any Vignetting when shifted to the maximum 15 degrees? Any sample images?
My goal is to emulate the 6:17 ratio for my landscape images but my concern is that vignetting may become a major issue when the adapter is fully shifted. I intend to use a Mamiya-sekor C 55mm f/2.8 N. From my calculations I will only require to shift the lens 13 degrees in both direction to obtain a 6:17 ratio.
I look forward to any responses.

Hi John,

Welcome to FM.

I use the Mirex with M645 lenses on my 6D, including the 55/2.8 N. I've never noticed any problems with vignetting, but I proabbly don't often use full shift.

I'll take a couple of sample images later today. Right now I have to clean up from moving furniture and go pick up the dog.

P.S. shift is in mm, not deg.

Hi jcolwell,

That would be fantastic, thanks. No hurry. Thanks for clearing up the degrees error 😳

Many thanks

In the mean time, here's some illustrations I made showing 15mm rise and 15mm shift for the Mirex on a FF sensor (interior red rectangle). The image circles of the M645 lens (solid black) and FF sensor (dashed black) are based on the 35mm sensor and 645 film media diagonals. Actual lens image circles are probably a bit larger. OTOH, the full 15mm shift gets to an aspect ratio AR = 2.6 (for w = 62mm, h = 24mm), which is not quite as wide as the AR = 2.8 (w = 67mm, h = 24mm) tha you want. Of course, if you crop a few mm of the top and bottom, you can get to and beyond AR = 2.8, no sweat.

That is very impressive and a brilliant help. 2.6 is not to far off my goal and may work for me anyway. Like you say, a modest crop would remedy that to a 2.8 AR. Extremely informative. Thanks a lot! 😄

John,

I've got the Mirex (Mamiya) to Sony alpha adapter, and Mamiya's 55mm f/2.8N. If you can wait a few days, I'll try to test out the limits of the adapter. I can't think there'd be any difference between the (rear) Sony mount and the EOS mount.

It's a hidden gem... I had already previously owned the Mamiya 645 system, and another user here was leaving the Sony alpha system and selling out. For about $600 for the converter, I got four tilt-shift lenses.

Hi mhespenheide,

I'm not in any hurry because I'm trying to sell my canon TS-E 45mm F/2.8 to release funds for the Mirex adapter. I'm particularly interested in horizontal stitched panorama's whereby the Mirex adapter has been shifted to the extreme at either end. If a FF sensor can stand up to that without too much vignetting then I will go ahead and buy one. I'm not too worried about the lenses as I have heard a lot of good things about the Mamiya 645 lenses particularly the ones marked "N". How have you found the lenses?

I'm hoping the Mirex system can perform especially now that the adapters are coming with a tripod mount. This is a big factor for me as it allows me to shift the camera and not the lens so to speak, therefore eliminating parallax errors. Like you said you can have a number of T/S lenses at a fraction of the cost of 1 Canon/Nikon one. Look forward to any examples you can provide.

John,

I'm using the 80mm about 45% of the time, the 35mm about 45% of the time, and the 55 about 10% of the time. I've also got the 45mm and the 150 f/3.5, but hardly ever use them.

I haven't done formal testing on them, and you'll want to go through the links above, but my informal read is that the 80mm is very, very good; the 35mm is good enough but definitely not at the level of the Canon 24 T/S; and my 55mm is good. I think I might have knocked something out of alignment in my 55, though, so I'd suspect that an "average" 55mm would be quite good. That said, I tend not to push the lenses to maximum shift since that's taking them out to the edge of their image circles, where the image quality is sure to degrade at least somewhat.

I'm not impressed with the 150 f/3.5; I should try out a 150 f/2.8 instead.

The 45mm is simply too close to my (preferred) 35mm and 55mm lenses.

If I'm hiking or backpacking but still choose to bring the T/S lenses, I'll often bring only the 35mm and 80mm.

Hah, hello again.

Can't say I've seen them all, but I have seen a few of the links. That will keep me going for a while 😆

I've read the Cambridge in Colour link. Pretty deep stuff, had to read over it a few times but very interesting all the same. I bought the Oopoomoo ebook called "The Tilt-Shift Advantage" and found that to be excellent, especially for those new to Tilt/Shift photography. Thank you for bringing all these links to one thread for me. I will spend some time reading through them.

Thanks again!

Hi mhespenheide,

Thanks for your comments. I think your right the image quality is bound to decrease as you shift towards the extreme on the Mirex but I think it will give me more options with all the Mamiya lenses that are available. Also the fact it shifts further than my Canon TS-E 45mm. I've been keeping an eye out for a mint 55mm F/2.8 but there not common it's the focal length I shoot most of my landscapes at. I think I will also go for the 80mm F/1.9 seems to be an excellent lens. If I feel I need A little less reach then I will go for the 35mm.

Here's a set of two images taken with 6D + M645 C 55/2.8 N on Mirex, taken in vertical mode with the camera supported by the RRS L-bracket, while being pushed down against the table top, by a hand on the grip. The first image is with 15mm shift up (rise), and the second is with 15mm shift down (fall).

I don't see any vignetting. I do see some colour and WB issues, but I don't want to talk about that... 'nuff said.

jcolwell,

Thank you sooo.... much. You've answered all my questions and prayers. I'm dumbfounded with the quality at such extreme shift. Can't wait to get mine now. When I do I will be Back in touch. Thanks for taking so much time to help a new member. You've made me feel really welcome.
