For those of you with both the 300GM and the 600GM, do you think you could be perfectly happy with only the 300GM + TCs? I am thinking about selling my 600GM for the more portable 300GM.

There are lots of examples here of the 300 2x combo. I would compare them with the
600mm photo thread and make your own decision. I previously owned the 600 f4 and find the 300 more versatile if you don't mind swapping the tele x's sometimes and of course the weight difference is heavenly. AF seems the same
The bare 600 is always going to be slightly better. It is also a platform for adding yet more reach with extenders. I view the 300 as an alternative for mobility when I want that rather than a replacement for the 600. I also have a number of situations where I actually want a 300 2.8 on its own.

Yeah. I was going to make a sale of the 600GM a month or so ago, but held off because I need >=800mm sometimes. Im still considering a swap (or I buy a 300GM, but $$$$)

For birding? No. I have both and tested them against each other. While the 300GM is an even better optic than the 600GM, that is only for the naked lenses, or when both have the same TC. The level of detail, the of center sharpness drop and CA of the 300GM&TC2 is closer (while still better) to a good 200-600G than to the 600GM.

An increasingly large % of my bird photography is shifting to lenses below 200mm in focal length, but I will still do a lot of BIF during parts of the year.

I've been thinking hard on this. I would be okay only owning the 300GM and TCs. I haven't really used the 600GM since buying the 300GM. But I would miss the 600GM sometimes. Sometimes I need that extra stop at 600mm. Just not throughout this past summer when light was usually plentiful and a lot of time was spent on the kayak and with owls in the woods.
So I'm keeping both for now. But will reevaluate once I've gone through all 4 seasons and see how much I use the 600.
These days I just like the portability of the 300 and for the first time ever with Sony I'm happy enough with the 2xTC to be at 600. If the lens didn't do well with the 2x (as I find the 400 and 600 don't) then I wouldn't own the lens.
But there is no doubt the AF speed of the 600GM at 600 is better than the 300/2x at 600. IQ is also better but not as much as you'd think. For me it is probably the AF that is a bigger differentiator between the two options at 600mm.
I do think that you want to have some use for the lens at 300 and 420 for it to make total sense. Sounds like you do from one of your followup posts.
Just got back a week ago from 10 days in Florida, during two hurricanes no less, fortunately we were on the west coast of Florida, so we're effected too much. Sure felt sorry for those in the path of both Helene and Milton. Early morning action was typically egrets fishing from the banks, and it wasn't until mid-morning that the osprey and pelican action started. Snowy egrets were active every morning.
