Yes, I just noticed that, I edited my post, and the results are very promising, I am in for this combo as a lightweight option next to the 600GM

I have been debating between the 400GM and 600GM (with the goal of ultimately getting both of them over the next 2 years). The 300GM has made me reconsider. I now may go 600GM and 300GM in the future.

IMO Sony completely missed the mark with this lens by not including a switchable 1.4x TC. I owned the EF 300/2.8 II since 2016 and sold it in 2021, and I used it exactly five times. The last two times just to prove myself that "I still need this lens". It's just too short for outdoor sports without a TC and too long for indoors. It can only cover very particular distances, when you know exactly where you're going to be. It could be a perfect lightweight, inexpensive and more flexible replacement for the 400/2.8 if it had an integrated TC, even if the TC would add $1.5k to the lens price and 300g to its weight.

lol..i love FM. You will always see the same 'expert mafia' on each group.

Geoff, my statement on 200-600 not give me enough detail is not for the STUPID stick shot or close up. Shit, i might as well using the iphone you know. It is for in flight under not ideal weather in MY AREA, NOT YOUR. We all know adding TC is not the right way to gain focal length on zoom lenses. However, it is more forgiven on prime lenses. AF speed is not effect much when pair with 2x on the 300GM. I would say about the 90-95% compare to 600GM and way faster that the 200-600G due to it dual linear motors..

BUT again, i'm not an expert like you so, what do i know right?

I'm inclined to think that this might be great for outdoor sports. Let's say that I have $12K to spend, and I already have an A1 or A9 with the 70-200GMii and the 1.4TC.

My choices for upgrading would be the 400GM or the 300GM and buy another A1. Shoot the latter with the 1.4TC, and I do give up a stop of light, but I now have two bodies - one to cover 70-200 for close up action and another to shoot 420 downfield that I can drop to 630 if needed.

Seems a great tradeoff to me, and I'm contemplating doing just such a purchase this spring.

100% agree with you here Geoff. AF acquisition will degrade, no question. And lack of detail with 200-600 @600? No, that lens can produce excellent detail with closer subjects even with a TC attached

Can't get detail with a 200-600? Come on....give me a break.

This one has the 2xTC on it. Anytime you can get as close as that roadrunner (as I did with this Pygmy) you can get crazy detail with any lens.

The place this 300GM is going to fail is the same place all of Sony's lenses fail with TCs and that is with AF.
I don't touch TCs at all anymore because of this. The 300GM may be better than 400GM and 600GM but I doubt it will be consistent enough to use as a 600mm lens all the time.

My favorite lens for whales, when I shot Canon was their 300/2.8, even though it was very heavy. The 300/2.8 and 200/2 were my favorite portrait lenses on Canon as well. I have been pining for either lens in Sony, and a - comparatively - really light one is more than welcome.

The Sony 100-400 is quite good for a zoom, but if the Sony 300 is as sharp as it seems wide open, then Iím really excited. The Sony DSLR 300mm was rather unremarkable. This new one appears to be a vast improvement.

How close were you to those whales? Wouldnít a 600mm be better?

To the folks who are busy criticizing this lens for how it might behave with the 2x .... it's obviously not meant to replace the 600 GM. Why would Sony even want that? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Alex, thanks for the samples.
I think you can safely ignore the critics and let them act out their own drama on FM. 😅

Personally... I'm not looking for a 600 f/4 replacement(I don't own one). I do however like the idea of having a lens which might be a little better than the 200-600 at the 600mm end. And then of course you get a 420 F/4 with the 1.4x and without seeing full res shots with and without the TCs on the lens... I'm hoping there is very little negative impact to the images/loss in detail. There are valid questions in the post, how will the AF with the 2x on it be impacted? I've only shot with the 1.4x on the 600 f/4 and I really didn't see a huge negative impact. I'm going off what little experience I have with the lens, I didn't photograph fast moving subjects with the TC attached, so I can't speak to a negative hit with the AF tracking.

I think this lens has us curious for various reasons, there are times when a 300 F/2.8 would be useful with my shooting style/subjects and being able to add a TC with little negative impact would be a bonus. I really enjoy shooting with the 200-600...having a F/5.6 vs f/6.3 600mm would be great as well. Again... if using the 300 with a 2x is viable.

Just my $.02 I appreciate the effort being made to share some shots and experience with the lens.

I wasn't referring to anyone who's actually interested in buying this lens.
I am also interested in this lens, even with the potential AF slowness and/or drop in IQ with the 2X.

I didn't take your comment that way I was just sharing my thoughts as the thread is up and down with opinions, as I mentioned, we all have our curiosities about the lens and how it will perform.

All is well in my little universe lol

Enjoy the day.

As long as the AF of the 300GM+2xtc is still very precise, I can live with a drop in speed of acquisition.

For sure you are going to miss action shots that you would get with the 600GM, especially when subjects move towards you very quickly, but when following birds in a panning style, precision is more critical than the raw speed.

F5.6 is an aperture that enables sufficient light for good contrast and acuity, and should also enable precise AF. The 200-600 has been praised but its AF is miles behind the 600GM and it has rather poor acuity and microcontrast in anything but the brightest light, and pretty bad CA when being very critical, which is why I sold it.

I don't see why the 300GM+2xtc would be a silly purchase, other than it being a lot more expensive than the 200-600.
I would rather have a v2 200-600 in GM outfit, with the XD linear motors and the best Sony coatings, and lighter and smaller than the current 200-600g, but nobody has a link to where I can buy such a lens for me. So that leaves the 300GM with tc's.

I will be very interested in this lens for use with the 2x TC if it's sharpness and AF performance is at least as good as the 200-600 which I currently use. The bokeh is clearly much nicer on the prime lens, it has a closer minimum focusing distance than the 200-600 and is a lighter package too. I would also have uses for 420mm f/4 and some for 300 f/2.8. I don't have the desire to go for the 600mm f/4. It is rather specialist beast for me being rather too large, heavy and expensive for my tastes, brilliant though it is.

If the image quality with TCs is there, the only thing that might put me off such a choice might be availability of a 500mm f/4 at an intermediate price. But there are no sigs of that on the horizon yet.
