handholding at low shutter speeds is great fun. I can't imagine with a native body, or the 8 stops stabilization with the A1 II (vs 5.5 stops with the A1)

Geoff, you had me wondering if you had switched to Canon after I saw some shots you posted in the Canon forum. Have you tried out the R5 mk2 yet? Any thoughts on the camera as far as bird AF vs Sony A1 or A9III?

I have shot the R5II for a couple days (borrowed from a friend). Great camera. Nice to have 30FPS at 45MP with precapture in RAW.
For non-BIF the R5II bird eye-af is well ahead of the A1 and ahead of the A9III.
For BIF it is really good. I think I still prefer the A1. But not by a lot.
Super good value for what it is as it matches or exceeds a lot of the A1 specs and yet costs a lot less. A1II isn't really going to add much over the R5II especially if the rumours saying it stays at 30FPS are true.
If Canon had even a single lens that interested me I would give some serious thought to moving back to it. Maybe if those patents for built in TC lenses make it to market I'll give it a closer look again. 400 f/4 DO with TC would be tempting if the weight was kept close to the Sony 300GM.

This was the sort of feedback I was looking for. Having another of my "thinking about switching" moments. I shoot a bit of everything (but mostly birding), and watching videos of the Canon cameras' AF system makes me feel like it's slightly better than Sony's, or at least looks like it is, based on the A.I animal detection. I'm with you on the lenses, though. Pixel peeping test results from all their lenses, it seems like Sony is a good bit higher quality as far as IQ goes, with the lenses you can compare apple to apple. And, the pricing, size and weight on Canon are also a bit of a turn-off as well. The cameras are so tempting, though.

How do you feel about Sony not using an AA filter on their R camera sensors (and the A1 + A9III) vs Canon using them on ALL sensors? When I look at Canon images, they seem slightly "soft" to me as far as detail goes. Although, having to remove moire in post is a little annoying on the Sony images.

I think the only thing stopping me from seriously considering a switch to Canon is that I am entirely reliant on zebras for properly exposing images. I would love to have the 100-300F2.8.
