Dec 24th seems a strange date to pick. Stores will be rushed to ship on Xmas Eve (if they are even open), many people will be travelling and away from home where the camera is shipping to and Fedex/UPS must be overwhelmed at this time of year.
Head scratcher for me.
I don't understand either. Lots of unavailable days for shipping because of holidays. Just before the weekend. Worst date ever 😅🙄

B&H still lists 12/15 as ship date, so with 5 days to go they have not updated anything.
I was talking with a guy at Conowingo Dam today and they called B&H and they told him delivery was on "hold indefinitely" so I think they have not gotten around to updating that yet.

How pathetic is that way of running a business. I'm sorry but this whole release and shipment debacle is way out of line as far as a way to run a business and keep customers simply "Informed". I don't think that is too much to ask. Imagine how much less stress it would be if Nikon would simply say that due to the supply issues, they are assuring dealers of stock Mid-January. At least then we wouldn't all be going nuts over this out-of-control way of running their business. And the retailers are either along for the ride or being just as dishonest about it. This is just not right.

Could be 100% true or could be he got the wrong person. We will know soon enough, no sense thinking too much about it.

Nothing is delayed…why are you complaining? Nikon said by end of the year, and they have not said they will miss that deadline. Nobody who knows anything about new high end camera releases thought all preorders would be met in day one. That takes 2-6 months. Always has, always will. If you did not know this, well now you do.
You keep going back and forth between, oh well, it is ok, to, this is a debacle. Everything is ok. For most folks, this is not stressful. If it is for you, I am sorry. But it is not Nikon’s fault.

Who's going nuts over this slight delay
people that may or may not be at home when the newly updated release and potential delivery date comes around. A lot are traveling and would be a bit less worried if they knew what the new delivery may be.

Very few people will get cameras from the first allotment. So, this is not going to be a problem for most people.
I am thinking a lot of folks here should not pre-order anything again. It is always uncertain when you will get an item that is not available when you place an order. If that is too unsettling, just wait till the rush is over and order the item when it is in stock.

I'm trying not to think about it, and expecting delivery of my z9 only by mid-January.
But if it slips further than mid-January, I am almost sure I'll cancel and go with Plan B.
But we will find out after Christmas what the situation is - it's now clear that
this 15th of December date came not from Nikon, but from retailers.

I agree with you. There is nothing new about this--it was exactly the same for both the D850 and the 500mm PF lens. To get them quickly one had to order just as soon as pre-ordering went live, and there was uncertainty about when shipping would start. I certainly understand the frustration of people who really really want the camera and are frustrated about the uncertainty. But the best us non-NPS folks can do is set an alarm and pre-order as soon as possible. It may be no way to run a business but it is the way it is and was totally predictable. If despite the hype and excitement you thought you could preorder after a week or so and still know when you would get the camera then unfortunately you did not do your homework.

What is your plan B?
Keep using my z7ii and maybe 1 z lens just to stay in touch with Nikon
Then get back to Nikon fully next summer, when the z 200-600 or 600/800 PF are out and
z9s are available in stores without too much wait.

Very true. Sony A7IV is set to ship from Dec 29th. This holiday will be a mess for z9 and A7IV pre-orderers.

If you have an a1, you are in good shape. I would just enjoy it. You are really not going to gain anything with the Z9. Both are great cameras and above the ability of 99% of us.

That is true. However, in Sony land, for superteles, there are 2 options .. 200-600 (great lens that needs lots of light and subject to background separation) or 600 f/4 (amazing lens that needs a kidney). In Nikon land, the roadmap looks promising, with 800 PF (maybe?), older F mount adapted 500s and 600s. That is my main reason for wanting a z9.

Can the F mount lenses be adapted to the a1? I never shot Sony.

Realistically if anyone non-NPS ordered a Z9 from a big retailer (like B&H) not the moment the orders went live can likely expect a looooong wait. I'd bet that smaller retailers are your best chance of getting this body sooner.
p.9 #19 · Z9: Countdown to air shipment and release.......
Not sure. I didn't even like the FTZ adapter TBH, but if it is for a 600mm or 500mm f/4, I wouldn't mind using FTZ. I think 2022 will be an awesome year for consumers, as Sony is sure to bring out something amazing or release a kickass firmware update for the a1, Canon r1 may be out, Nikon z9 with new firmware for 8K 60 plus more z teles and superteles.

Off topic but any luck with the eagles? I have been eyeing the weather thinking about a trip up there this week or next - but not on a Saturday or Sunday.
