Why the 24th? I think December 24th was the latest date Nikon could set, to still get Christmas sales.
This makes no sense. How does shipping a few select preorders on 12/24 maximize their Christmas sales? Anyone ordering after the 12/24 date was announced for Asia was never going to get one anytime soon.
Also, remember, Nikon USA has not said anything about 12/24. They have already shipped the two lenses and the FTZII that became available the same day. I see no reason to believe the Z9 does not start shipping today, or next week, or in January.

NikonUsa is not going to say anything about 12/24 because they don't drive the boat. I've had many conversations with them over the years, and they've always said the same thing: "We do not know anything sooner than you do."
Didn't Nikon Japan's official memo to the world say that the Z9 would be released on the 24th? If I am wrong, please post otherwise.
What I said, does make sense: All I am suggesting, is that their date of the 24th, tells the Christmas-celebrating world that "Hey, here is a gift in time for Christmas." People give cars for Christmas, why not a $5K camera?
That date tells me that they are way behind with the Z9 (we already know this from the Japan memo... do you not believe it?) and the 24th is the latest date they can give (to give them as much time as possible), and still be in the running for an XMAS gift. Makes perfect sense.
Again, if it is released on the 24th, nobody is going to get it in time for XMAS, but they can get the order in NOW. That is, unless it ships early (as you suggest). I think George hopes/thinks the same as you.
Believe me, I really hope that you are right and I am wrong.
Now, NPS told me that the Z9 would ship "before the end of the year. "
And you "see no reason to believe the Z9 does not start shipping today, or next week, or in January. "

Well here is my disappointing update.
As I've mentioned I'm #1 on the list AFTER NPS.
He still doesn't know an exact date for first allotment but believes it will be around the 24th.
From my dealer today:
"We are getting a few cameras but not enough to satisfy NPS and Nikon has specifically allocated them by name. Who knows what the supply will be like going forth. The 100-400mm we are getting 1 and 24-120mm 3 so its pretty sad."

I've been a bit disappointed to see just a few pop up in this forum that have attacked what information I brought forth referring to me as a troll and worse. Technically, with another name, I've been on this forum since around 2004. Sure, I've had several brands along the way, but it still didn't earn being trashed.
That said I'll just note at this time B&H, if asked, will tell you regarding the Z9 and new lenses ordered, that they have NO idea when they will arrive, be available for sale or ship. I'll leave that there. They are also changing their in house card run by Synchrony Bank in January. Requiring a client re apply for the new card, which I guarantee you will cause a number of orders to die due to cards not being renewed.
Aside from that, personally, I decided to contact 2 other reputable dealers I've worked with in the past yesterday and got on their call lists when the Z9 and lenses showed up. One dealer who I spent a lot with over the last several years said they would bump me up in their list as he prefers to work with good consistent customers vs. new ones (an interesting approach but not one I disagree with). The 2nd only had 20 people in front of me but that dealer stated most often many drop off their call pre order lists as they end up getting it elsewhere and I would likely get bumped up in that list as well. I'll just take the funds out of my savings and be done with it should that happen, which it likely will. I would hazard to guess I might actually see the gear by March-April as opposed to August-September by a B&H option. So hopefully that bit of news won't inflame some folks, as I feel it's reasonable to share.

But it makes no sense. Order today...you are not getting it by Christmas!! So, it "shipping by Christmas" has no impact on your ability to give it as a Christmas gift because it is not shipping to YOU! (and by YOU, I mean any hypothetical person who orders now).
Exactly...I can't narrow it down. And I am not looking for clues to narrow it down, only to get disappointed when it comes after than some internet prediction.
Nikon USA knows exactly what is going on.
Nikon Japan is not Nikon Global. Nikon Japan said 12/24, not Nikon Global.

I just talked to B&H and was told they expect a shipment of Z 100-400’s on 12/22. The CS rep told me they did not know (or say) how many they are getting.

I'm sure Nikon will ship this year. There's nothing saying they can't ship a small amount. They still make the deadline that way. The real question is how many, and the orders versus ability to produce them.

I, too, am hoping. I found a local store that I could order through online. I'm #3 and don't know how many NPS are on their list either. Here's to hoping for the impossible. 😄
Of course, all I've got at the moment is a Z6 and a D3s. No fancy A1 here.

I do believe I've caught a ray of light in this whole mess. If I don't get one till April or May I'll just be able to pay cash outright for the body and probably at least 3 lenses and a TC. The extended financing offered by B&H won't mean a thing. Frankly I expect I'll get a call from one of the two other dealers I got placed on their call list for pre order long before I'd get a call from B&H. Could even be in February-March which is also fine I suppose. The weather will suck prior to that anyway so not as much ability to go out and work with it as much. It's all good. Heck who knows, by April Nikon is likely to release a Firmware update to fine tune the Z9 by then

I think you'll be able to buy Geoff's used body sooner than May when he realizes it doesn't check X or Y box
