Maybe already discussed, I couldn’t wade back though the bickering. Anyone else looking forward to comparing the Siggy 45 to the 40/2.5? Good looking lenses, good times.

I am. I have the Sigma 45 and yet the 40 and the 50 G appeal to me. Could be a 'horses for courses' type situation but I may have to jump in and buy one of the Sonys. It would be great if they rendered decidedly different enough that I could justify the Sigma plus one of the Sony's haha. Likely the 50, as I really covet the 35 GM...

I really like the Sigma rendering but a little wider and faster, and I assume better AF-C wouldn’t hurt...

Don't tilt it. Lived through many a DSLR that did not allow the LCD to be tilted at all. If you really need a compact full frame camera, you'll need to live with some compromises. Or just use bigger cameras that can tilt the screen...you have a choice.
I really, really hate to weigh in here but-
I may never turn the screen to "selfie" mode, but will I turn the screen inward protecting it? Every day I use the camera. This can tossed in any bag or big pocket; stuffed in a glove compartment, lent to a loved one who'll jam it in a purse; etc. Being able to easily protect the screen in a small carry camera is much more important then having a tilt screen. To me.

I tried the Batis 40, after owning and really enjoying the Batis 85, but was really disappointed with focusing abilities. This was with the updated firmware. I also found I didn’t like the heavy vignetting. Additionally I tried the Sigma 45, again focus issues plagued it and as much as I wanted to like the rendering it just didn’t suit my taste. Enjoyed the build quality of both, though they are night and day different in design. Really looking forward to trying the 40mm and 50mm. I have a big gap between 24mm and 85mm with prime lenses in my kit.

Am I right in thinking that these lenses are designed to offer a small prime alternative to a 24-70 or 24-105mm zoom for the traveller? Otherwise I get the 24mm, but the 40/50mm lenses are competing with the 35mm f2.8 and 50mm 1.8.

Rumoured at 700 euros. Seems a tad steep to me considering the aperture l. At that price why would anyone choose this 40 over the 35 2.8? (I appreciate 35 isn’t 40 )

I really don't appreciate the 'compact' premium they are charging on that, especially if the 40 doesn't even have an ED element.

Bottom line smaller is usually more expensive. Since when was Sony low in price. Seriously would you if running the company charge less for small and compact. You would certainly charge more with a big grin on your face, and your stock holders would love you.
It’s a feature set like anything else small, light and hopefully for us quite good. It’s going to be more than the 35 1.8 which BTW not one person here even asked me about it on the BS. Had to sell on evil bay. But that’s not the point . With this announcement coming which really it has, the brakes went on selling everything else.
seriously I can’t find a used Sony or Batis 135.
Bottom you got a problem how much there charging than either you pay the freight or keep your hands in your pocket . These are not going to be cheap
The rest of this thread as a very long time member, it’s deplorable and you know who you are. Grow up
I look forward to these. I have on the way the Sigma 65 that was 700 and I think maybe quite good. I would suspect these maybe in that price range as well, maybe even 799

I own 4 GM lenses ranging from 16mm to 135mm so fully aware of what the premium is with Sony but are you telling me I can’t have an opinion that 700 euros is steep for these particular lenses??

No I would not argue the amount. What I am saying is there is no free ride here. We are going to get dinged hard here. They know they can. It's this it's gotta be small, light and good demand that we impose. We are going to pay for that

Lenses aren't sold by the pound. It depends on the qualities and on what goes into designing and producing them. A small high quality lens with multiple features (like an aperture ring, assignable button, and AF/MF switch) and excellent AF and a strong build can be quite expensive. These are G-speced lenses. They are just a notch below GM. Expect quality and a commensurate price.
