I find it odd they're coming out with a 40mm and 50mm at the same time sure there's a difference but I think a compact 35 in the gap between the 24 and 50 would've made more sense. That being said if they truly are compact and flare resistant with nice sunstars stepped down I could see my kit changing again and selling off my loxias buy ik still waiting for the 16gm
They’re waiting to release a compact 35 attached to the RX1R iii.

There is not enough spacing between the 20mm and 24mm, IMHO. And I love the GM 24mm lens. Why not make a stellar 28mm f/1.8 instead? The 40mm is intriguing, especially if the aperture is at least f/2.0 or preferably faster.
I see that Steve expressed the same feeling regarding a 28mm focal length...

I think I’ve read that 40mm is easier to design compactly than 35. But I would have liked better gapping too. 28, 40, 65 would have done it.

I'm with you in wanting a fast 28mm...but I'm guessing Sony thinks they won't sell very many. I wonder what sales of Nikon's 28/1.4 and 28/1.8 are compared to the 24 and 35 duos of the same speed...

It might be but the gapping is off for the both of us and either suggestion is better. Now time to wait and see what the aperture and size are going to be.

I'm betting 24 f/1.8, 40 f/1.8, and 50 f/1.4, but we will see. These would all go well with the 20 f/1.8 and only duplicate the ZA 50 f/1.4 and given that Sony has already duplicated the ZA 35 f/1.4 I don't think that is a very big deal to Sony. I think Sony is totally ignoring Zeiss at this point.
I'm betting against 1.4/50.
The GM line is now characterised by f1.4 and faster, and I think that an f1.4 G lens would be confusing. G seems to mean as good as GM but a bit slower now, and so how to understand 1.4G?
So my guess, and it's a pure guess, is a 1.8 or even 2/50 G to basically replace the ZA55
I suppose something more pancakey for the 7c series like a super compact f2.5 isn't out of the question either..

Looks like this might be the first year of no new lenses for me. I guess it had to happen eventually. I can look at it as a good thing as it'll save me money!

I’ve said this many times over the years and it’s never come true! 🙂. Trust me, you’ll get something.

I don't really characterize the GM line as f/1.4 and faster. There is of course the 100 GM which is merely f/2.8, and of course the lovely 135 GM is f/1.8. I think GM lenses will always be faster than non-GM lenses at the same or similar focal lengths, but with a 50 f/1.2 GM, I think that leaves room for a 50 f/1.4 G. Keep in mind this will be the sixth Sony 50ish lens. They have already doubled up at f/1.8 (plain Sony 50 f/1.8 and Sony ZA 55 f/1.8). I think it makes more sense to double up at 50 f/1.4 than essentially triple up with an f/1.8 or f/2 G. Of course I could be totally wrong. Perhaps they want these lenses really small and we will get an 24 f/2.8, a 40 f/2.8, and a 50 f/2, but if I were betting I would bet on the faster apertures.

A 50 1.4G that renders in the ballpark of the Sigma Art with better AF for $900 or less would be very interesting...seems kind of crazy to release that at the same time as the GM though. I might be interested in a 1.6 too...why doesn’t anyone make 1.6 lenses? How much smaller would they be than 1.4 lenses?

Perhaps, but I am inclined to think the 100 gets in by virtue of special features (if we get shift lenses they might be GM even if not f1.4 or faster) and the 135 is f 1.8, but at those focal lengths that’s sort of equivalent to 1.4 at shorter ones.
Also, a 1.4 would be only half a stop slower than the 1.2GM, and since I don’t think since the 20 G and GM are distinguished much by build or IQ, but may speed when both exist, they won’t be making a G that close.
But of course we are just speculating. I guess we’ll see soon enough!

I don't really understand a 40mm now. How old is the 35mm 1.8? 1 year? 2? Of course it is not a G lens, but I don't really know where a 40G would stand between the 35mm 1.8 and the GM 35... not to say that there is also the 35 Zeiss...

I think the 40mm will be slower and more compact - f/2.8 or f/2.5. In that case it will (more or less) replace the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 in the lineup.
Also think the 50mm won’t be f/1.4 - one week after the GM, and before that one is even available to buy, cannibalisation would be too high. Replacing the 55mm ZA with a new f/1.8 G lens makes sense though.
But man Sony is killing it at the moment. Release the A7m4 please - by now I‘m almost willing to accept Sony ergos just for the lenses (sorry Nikon...)

You might be right. Since Sony looks to replace their Zeiss lenses (35 ZA and 50ZA), it makes sense to replace the 35 and 55 sonnars.

I could see these being closer to CV size if they are F2 lenses, which might be really nice! Hopefully they get the pricing right and don't go for the 'compact=premium' angle.
Usually Nokishita posts about it about a week in advance, so I feel like we could see these as early as next week?
