A few more from this morning.
I had to do some work on the Kingfisher flight shots. I screwed up my ss a little.
All are heavy crops and not very good but hey, at least the camera did it's job. No hope for the moron standing behind it.

Did I miss shots with either the 600mm or 800mm F11? I have the 600mm in my cart but looking for samples of how well it will perform in the real world before I purchase.

That’s what I feared. I have that lens, but no camera. Guess the R5 would do the trick. Looking at my piggy bank now...

Geoff I used Amy's 400 DO II today with the 2x along side my 400mm f2.8. The 2x worked actually the best on any camera so far. Static was just outstanding. Tracking missed a bit but nailed most of them. I did not look at the files yet, but on the screen many are very nice. The speed is slower than the 2.8 but I feel the DO now is a more capable flight lens at 800mm. I had Amy try the R5 as she was using the 1dx II not the III and was very impressed by the responsiveness.

im looking at the 400 DO II as well, but I wonder if its going to be used with a 2x, how much better is it compared to the RF 800? You will lose 1 stop of course, but maybe AF of the native RF lens would be faster and more accurate? If you ever do get your hands on the RF I would be very curious to know. Thanks

Rob and Dave, having used my 500 f/4 is ii +- tc’s for years on my 5dmkiv’s I never saw the level of sharpness or af accuracy (even when calibrated) that your images with the R5 are displaying. Can you comment on this?

If the R5 has a revised low pass filter that Canon claims outresolves the 5ds, then it will be even better than the 5D4 in that regard.

I'm not at the skill level of many of the excellent photographers here but if the R5 makes this easier with sharper images for me then all the better.

Sorry for the non R5 post. One of my photo bucket list goals list is for a tac sharp swallow in flight shot. This is the closest I have come.

My approval level for the R5 increased significantly after members posts.

But not there yet.

I can hear someone say who you are? 😄

My experiance started with the covid19🤣

I still want to see consistant sharpness for R5 images. I have seen sharpness in R5 images but so far very limited.

My money is allocated and ready to be paid either to Sony or Canon. I washed my hands from Nikon c-af/tracking wise.

The MFD of the 400mm f2.8 with the crop mode makes for a nice close up lens. This is full frame.

Well I am spoiled with the 1dx Mark III in that regard, but yes the extenders work flawless in my opinion. Yesterday I used my 400mm strait, with the 1.4x and with the 2x and really did not notice any AF performance issues. I will have to say the EOS R did a really nice job in that regard also. I do not even think twice about using extenders with Canon's line up. I will be curious if the RF extenders will offer any performance advantage over the current EF extenders.

Man, I’m really starting to wonder how well the R5 + RF 100-500mm combo will work and what impact the RF 1.4x will have.

Dave, thanks for all your post and your pics on the R5. You and Rob are doing a great job providing us real world info. And I’m sure making members checking accounts balance smaller. I shoot with the 600 vII and your pics with the 500 vII are a great help in deciding my next camera upgrade.
I know all the treads have been for wildlife but I also do landscapes with the 5dmark4. I’m wondering if any members have been using live view for any extended period of time? I read where battery life was only about an hour in live view. I’m hoping that is incorrect. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Rick

Your observations are appreciated and what I am still trying to gauge is whether the same lenses and tc’s applied to the R5 will deliver performance I am not accustomed to seeing from a 5dmkiv? Are you using your IS or turning it off at higher Tv?

With respect to the tc’s it’s a bit of a Frankenstein connection having an ef lens, an R adapter, then an R tc, no? If the ef lens, ef tc and R adapter work fine, why change?
