Outstanding shots Claude! Did the eye tracking keep up with him on each frame?

Thank you!
No it didn't, sometimes it did confuse the nose with the eye or it lost the eye - it is impressive nevertheless.

Do you think the 1DXII AF would have produced a similar number of in-focus images from such sequences? What was the acceptable in-focus percentage with the R5?

The 1DXII is my primary camera and I shoot some sports with it. The R5 is appealing due to the higher resolution and therefore additional cropping options. I'd probably use the in-camera APS-C crop option a fair amount instead of a 1.4x TC.

I’ll subscribe to this thread, very interested in how the R5 performs as a still camera, I don’t have much interest in video at all. My main lens would be the RF 50/1.2L :-)

I took over 1200 shots today, mostly outdoor of kids at a summer camp. Focus was spot on, better viewfinder and less lag than the R.

I shot with it for 2 hours continuously this afternoon. I took over 1200 photos in 32 Celsius sun, with mechanical shutter and electronic shutter. I had 2 x LPE6 batteries in the grip. 57 and 58% charge showing.

No issues at all. Loving the camera

She's a real doll!

Actually, good images and good demonstration of the capability in that situation.

This Barn Swallow image is about a 10-11 megapixel crop out of the original image. Shot in manual with the 600iii. ISO 3200, f/4, 1/2500, really crappy light and it ended up being underexposed by about a half stop. It's a tad muddy--very much could be my processing affecting this as well as not being able to use Lightroom the way I'm used to as I had to used DPP first. Overall I was pretty happy with the photo for the first evening out.

Sorry, for RobAmy's bird shots.

Is that the vI, II or III 600 mm? Those are incredibly sharp with the 2x extender. I have the 2X extender (version III I believe) and 600 mm F4 vII. If I can get that sharp at those ISOs and shutter speeds I will be ecstatic!

I tried to download it tonight, but I don't have Word on my Mac and it said it was required. I'll try to see if I can figure it out tomorrow afternoon.

I don't have Word either and I upgraded yesterday. I dumped Word when I got my new iMac and went 64 bit last year. Now I use the free Mac Pages, Numbers and Keynote.

Just a matter of interest, was this shot in mechanical or electronic shutter?

I'm not sure. I was shooting in both. I *think* it was mechanical but I'm not positive. Is this discoverable in EXIF somehow?

To be sure about my answer I should shoot them side by side in the same conditions. I did a similar sequence with the same Golden Retrievers in January were I had less keepers with the 1DXII but the light was not good. It is not easy to keep the focus point(s) on the eyes with the 1DXII, as the focus points are quite centred the image has to be cropped most of the time. The 1DXII or myself ( ?) struggled also with the speed of the dogs. I had many shots were the focus was behind the head and once you have lost focus in a series, it does not come back and the whole series may be lost. Experienced sports and wildlife photographers may not experience this

I am confident that I will get more keepers with the R5 as this was already very good for the first time with all the default settings (AF Case was set to Auto). Before preordering the R5 I tried the RP against the 1DXII in sports and while it was very slow I was impressed by the AF. The R5 completely changes the way you focus: simply use face and eye tracking, no fiddling around with focus points, no switching between One Point and Servo AF and you can use the whole frame for focusing so you can limit the cropping. Nevertheless, I recommend you to try it out because a 1DXII in the right hands is great.

I cannot really comment on the percentage of acceptable in-focus images. If the dogs are running full speed I am happy if half of the images are in focus, if they run slower, the rate will go up to 80-100%.

*** Update: I revised my images - there still are a bunch of out-of-focus images ... on both cameras - I'll have to work my technique

Claude

Thanks, it is the 600mm III as answered above. The 2x works great on this.

Thanks, in my own yard. We are lucky in that regard. We purpose put a pond/water feature in, native plantings, bird houses etc to attract them over the years.
