Wonderful images! Wow ISO 32,000 for the bear. Really? How did you handled the noise? Both images are superb!
Thank you. And yes, the bear is ISO 32,000. I wish I would have had my 500 f/4 II mounted on my camera when she showed up but instead I had my 100-500 mounted.
If you ETTR with the R5 and don't crop, you can get away with crazy high ISO's. I just used LR denoise on that image.

thanks Dave for the information. I was aware that ETTR and minimal cropping could help handling the noise especially if using Topaz AI or Pure Raw. I never used LR denoise, but I will give it a try as this is an impressive result. Yes, the 500 F4 mark ii is hard to beat. I sold mine many years ago when I got the 600 F4 mark ii and I always have to resist temptation when I see one for sale. However right now I am more tempted by a switch to Nikon mainly because of their lens selection for bird and wildlife. Will see if with the announcement of the R1 and R5 mark ii Canon also comes up with some nice lens options and suprises for wildlife.
Wonderful capture! Love the colours! Our Rufous are gone, Have not seen them in a couple of days and the Ana's have taken over all the feeders and surrounding flowers bushes.

Thanks, Chantal! Canon certainly has the best colours in the industry, bar none. I'm going to miss that the most when I switch back to Sony.
I have always been a Canon shooter and until now had too much invested in it to consider a switch. But I recently sold many of my prime lenses and many of my zoom lenses so a switch is in the realm of possibilities. I love the Sony technology and all their key advantages for action shots but I fear their menu system and complexities based on what I have read and the youtube videos I watched. But most importantly I think Nikon is the one that perhaps is offering the best lens options for bird and wildlife photographers. My husband certainly fear my switch no matter where I decide to land. It is not going to be cheap. I think he would prefer I buy a new car All this being said, I would love to hear why you would switch to Sony. I think that you used to shoot Nikon too. So if that is the case, why did you come back to Canon? Although I have been following Fred Miranda for a while, I am not aware of all the rules and the ethics. I am not even aware of where the rules can be found. So I hope I am not offending anyone by posting those questions here? Should these be asked on the Nikon or Sony Forum? thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

Sony's new menu system is actually pretty good; Nikon's menu system is probably the worst in the industry now. Nikon does have some attractive telephoto options for birds and wildlife, but they don't have as much to offer in the shorter focal lengths. Canon would still be my first choice if they made a camera with a two-axis tilting LCD screen like the better Nikon and Fuji cameras have; the hybid tilting and selfie screen on the Sony A7R V is a reasonable compromise. I've tried living with the selfie screen on the R5 for three months now, and just find it too much of a hindrance.
Unfortunately, there are a few emotionally-challenged Nikon trolls that scour the Canon, Sony, and Fuji forums to spew misinformation on threads comparing the different brands, so be forewarned.

Chantal, do not be so quick to dismiss Olympus/OM Systems. Build quality and lenses are as good or better than the Big Three. I see plenty of wildlife photographers shooting with M4/3 gear and getting better images than many get from using FF gear.

Thanks to the link to the Rules Tony and other FAQ I have been wondering about that and how things work with posting and forums. Regarding the OM system you are totally right. I follow some people on Flickr who use it mainly for macro photography and I am totally impressed with the image quality they get. The colours are so rich and the details are hallucinating. I quickly checked out some of the reviews a while back and I think that what was making the system a little less appealing to me are some comments about the AF and Tracking capacity of the system. This being said yesterday I met someone who has the system and the portability if just incredible.... Sadly I am no spring chicken anymore and I invisage the switch as a long term strategy, I am not in a big hurry but lighter is a key criteria for a switch. Things evolve so fast in the world of photography I would not be surprised if Olympus resolves some of the current concerns for wildlife photography. I suspect the only way to see if it suits my needs is to test drive the system. I checked Vistek and they do no rent that gear. Are you aware of anybody in Canada that rent the gear. There are other elements which are important like the lens line up, the customer service, the future of the cie etc but first, I need to see if I like the system. Unfortunately in Canada and more importantly on Vncvouer Island we do not seem to have many options to test drive photography gear. But I never really looked into this outside of Canon as I am a CPS member and they provide a great service in that respect. One of reason I am trying to hang in there with them.

A friend of mine in Edmonton was selling his OM-1 system, including the 150-400mm f4.5 and 90mm macro, in case anyone is interested.
I would also second Tony's comment about Olympus/OM systems and their build quality. Also their dual synch (IBIS + lens IS) is rock solid.

Thanks for letting me know. It is quite an intriguing option. I wish I could test drive it but in any case, I will wait for Canon to make their announcement Mid July? and see where I go from there.

Hi Ronny
I am taking a break from posting but I keep shooting. I have been visiting Fred Miranda for quite a while but rarely have anything to add to the discussion. I was toying with the idea of acquiring the Olympus 150-400 even if the AF system might not be on par with other system. What worries me the most is the quality of the bokeh. Let me know if you have used the lens. I did not know you were posting here. Will look you up. Hope the rest of your Summer is great. Your macro work is awesome!
