Sorry for being late to the party, was out doing more testing in the field. First off let me start by I never get upset by someones opinion regarding the sharpness of my shots. I agree some do not have the same pop as the 1dx. Not making excuses but I have had poor light, excessive heat and I have to use DPP which I only use Lightroom. I did shoot everything in RAW then to DPP then to PS. On my Mac they look pretty impressive. I have never been one that likes the over sharpened look so I tend to back off on the sharping, personal taste.

Some of these shots are handheld at very low shutter speeds with extreme reach. the 2x plus crop mode, so I really do not expect the same level of sharpness with higher shutter speeds, better light, tripod etc. Honestly even my first pictures with the 1dx did not look great, they got better as I went. Same here, new camera and playing with many things and lenses, so could be some variation for sure.

However with that said this camera is really good. The AAEF is so good (awesome animal eye focus) I changed the name there I actually left my yard and used it in the field. It just locks on. I did not look at the files yet but on the screen they are nice. As far as tracking, I tracked terns today and absolutely no problem tracking them in flight. Whatever lag/blackout does not interfere with tracking at all. I have my EVF set to 120 fps, looks very nice.

My battery grip came in yesterday so I used today, it is very nice. I had no heat issues at all and the batteries still showed 62% on the new battery and 58% on the older battery, so not bad at all. I actually think getting the battery out of the camera helped with the heat, my own feeling nothing to test that.

This has in my opinion improved on everything with the EOS R. Do I feel it will replace the 1dx, no because they are just different tools. Both highly capable for my use.

I feel this was a very good purchase and I think many with like using it. I did not even try the video yet. Now on to looking at my shots from today

Rob, what scenarios do you anticipate favoring the 1DX over the R5?

With 45mp I'm a little concerned about motion blur. I'm not the steadiest person and I it gets worse when I start to get tired. I need to stop drinking a Tim Hortons extra large coffee before I shoot. Did that shooting a wedding once. That was the last time I did that.

Yes, increasing sensor resolution continues the seemingly endless need for higher shutter speeds and higher ISOs (of course this is assuming handheld and/or non-stationary subjects). But again this depends on the end use of the images. At least in my case, were I to use the R5, the majority of client images I would be downscaled a fair amount, which would offset the technical liabilities. I could get away with using the R6 instead, but a primary interest of the R5 is its reach in lens limited situations, or more cropping flexibility.

Thanks Rob...please share some 400DOII/2xTCIII shots when you have the time. I'd be using that combo at least 75% of the time if I splurge on the R5. My R5 purchase is basically hinging on finding a local used 400DOII to buy right now.

Geoff I used Amy's 400 DO II today with the 2x along side my 400mm f2.8. The 2x worked actually the best on any camera so far. Static was just outstanding. Tracking missed a bit but nailed most of them. I did not look at the files yet, but on the screen many are very nice. The speed is slower than the 2.8 but I feel the DO now is a more capable flight lens at 800mm. I had Amy try the R5 as she was using the 1dx II not the III and was very impressed by the responsiveness. She usually does not even use the 2x on her DO II. I had Ospreys today at a good distance in crop mode even and it locked on very nicely. I am not sure if you used the DO on Pius's 1dx III but you get similar performance in Live View but only better because of the AEF. I think you will be pleased with the setup. I will try to get a couple pics up later, they may not be sharp

If you need more speed, better buffer and I feel it focuses a little faster in poor light, nothing scientific here just my feeling from use. I still feel like I have to be careful with the camera over the 1dx also, not sure if that is valid but the 1dx just feels more robust. It is more weather sealed also, I have the grip on the R5 and do not see that as all that weather tight. The biggest issue is the battery just goes forever in the 1dx also. The files do have a nice feel also with the 1dx, granted I have not used the R5 much yet, so some things could change my feelings. Right now I feel I have a perfect combo with both. Do I think you can get away with just the R5, then yes. I think it will be a great all around camera. Now if they add the AEF to the 1dx Mark III then that could be interesting.

I should mention they were all taken with eye AF. I shot them at f/1.2 to test the eye AF.

Thanks from me as well. I've held on to this lens and 2X waiting for a body to be released that I'd be interested in. I'm out of state and my R5 and 800 RF are still in their boxes, waiting for me at home. It was going to be an additional 400 in tax to have it shipped to my current location, so reading your results is helping a little with the impatience.

Someone questioned how well the Animal eye tracking would do with other objects around the area where it might get confused and not lock.

There is a problem to have... hundreds of good infocus shots and you don't know which ones to cull.

It’s a good problem to have vs a bad problem i.e. of having to cull through and delete tons of OOF BIF shots that I had actually gotten used to doing! I will miss that ... not!
