Production supposedly at 1/4 normal. Decision being made to release on schedule with short supply or delay till the fall with better supply.

Certainly isn't going to hurt my feelings any. I need more time to save up anyhow. It takes the pressure off me to cave before my Alaska trip too.

Why do people think this is only effecting Canon? It's going to effect nearly every industry on the planet in some form or another.

This was reported back at the beginning of Feb.

Sony has four factories in China and Totoki announced in a news conference, reported by Nikkei, that Sony is "concerned about the spread of the coronavirus" and "cannot deny that our production and sales supply chain for the image sensor and electronics business could be affected enormously".

I don't think anyone thinks this is only affecting Canon. Who has said that? Nikon already announced delays for four upcoming releases including D6 with no new date set. Apple has supposedly delayed its end of March event (although they hadn't yet announced said event). Every industry has some supply from China for certain parts. Good news today is China has reopened all factories but still only ~60% of workforce is back.

Yup, anyone and everyone who buys from China are affected. We buy printing in China and we have lost the whole month of February, as all factories are closed by government mandate. They re-opened earlier this month, so we are one month behind on every project. The entire manufacturing sector in China halted production for a month. Hopefully the situation does not take a turn for the worse, so we are only seeing a one-month delay.

I hope they go with the 1/4 production. Always seems like ramped-up new model releases are prone to issues, and this might be a better way to start – better QC and lower output for a few months before ramping up.

Most factories are still not running at 100% capacity and workers from certain provinces are still on lock down and unable to return to their work places - following their return to their home towns for the Chinese New Year holidays. This means more pressure for these factories to meet production quotas and deadlines. When that happens QC may take a hit.

I also would prefer them to release or at least announce on schedule and have lower supply. I just want to know what the camera can really do...I'm not very patient...

Seems like going outside in a natural area, not too crowded, should really cut down on transmission. Guess I'll just go shoot photos

Exactly what I do every Fri-Sun and will continue to do...and the best part now is if I do happen to run into someone out there I just start hacking and they get lost instead of sparking up some stupid conversation about how big my lens is...win, win for me.

A 3.4% death rate is pretty high, if it stays that high. But it still means 96+% of the people survive.

Current estimates for the number of people expected to be infected in Germany is about 70% (announced by Merkle, a day or two ago). Yesterday, Canada announced we expect an overall 30% to 70% infection rate. Say, you have 330M people with an infection rate of 50% and death rate of 3.4%, that's 5.6M deaths.

I'm glad I got back to Canada. All of February in Portugal but we spent March 1 to 5 in London. Out of all of the airports since leaving and returning we seem maybe 30 people in total wearing masks. We used a a lot of hand sanitizer. This is day 8 and I'm still feeling OK. Hope that continues.

Same here Jim, 40-70% was the numbers that was mentioned here in US

Someone posted this to a similar post on the Sony board

I looked up the the credentials of the individual being interviewed about Covid 19

"Dr. Osterholm is Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute, College of Science and Engineering, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School, all at the University of Minnesota. From June 2018 through May 2019, he served as a Science Envoy for Health Security on behalf of the US Department of State. He is also on the Board of Regents at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa."

You may want to give this a listen.

I don't want to get political but I'll take a jab at Trump. He was didn't want to let people off that cruise ship because that would make his numbers look worse. Seems more concerned about that than the welfare of people. I guess he won't be too thrilled with 40-70%.

p.5 #20 · Corona virus VS R5 production???

While, like all of you no doubt, I have opinions about the political issues and about the science of coronavirus spread, I'm going to take my own advice and save those discussions for more general forums. There are plenty of those, and some of them include input/participation by people with expertise in those subjects.

So, how am I responding to the situation as a photographer?

1. Like an earlier poster, I'm avoiding travel that requires overnight stays and crowds, and instead focusing on subjects where I can practice social distancing. (I'm in two high-risk groups, so this seems like an extra-good idea.) I've been visiting several local hiking areas more frequently where California's green season is just starting. Expect a lot of photographs of hills, grassland, and oak trees.

2. Outdoor neighborhood walks pose little risk, so I'm carrying my small street photography set-up when I go out. Look for local subjects. A few years back I learned that if I go out into familiar areas with a camera I usually see things that I would otherwise miss, and that it turns out that there are more subjects than I would have expected.

3. This is also an opportunity to try some things I usually don't do — like finding photographic subjects right at home. If Edward Weston could produce a brilliant photograph of a pepper that he was about to prepare for dinner, perhaps I can work on creating something from equally mundane "found objects" at home.

4. I'm going back through my (huge) archive of raw files from almost 20 years of serious photography with digital cameras. Whenever I do that I discover things that I missed originally... and which are worth spending some time on.

5. I've begun to consider if there is any way I can produce some sort of photographic record of what is happening and how it changes our day-to-day lives. I don't have a useful answer to that question yet, but I'm still pondering...

Fortunately, I don't need any equipment that I don't already have. While I'm hopeful that those camera production facilities and shipping companies will be back up and running before too long — and while I'm encouraged by new camera developments — I can still do what I need to do with the equipment I have.

I wonder if others have some ideas about how they will refocus their photography during this period?

Dan
