Sometimes the word "plastic" evokes a lot of negative associations for readers. However, there are many kinds of plastic and many ways to use it — and sometimes a thing made of plastic is superior to one made of metal. How about we wait and see?

I don't like the fact that the top has two pieces. The design appears to be a compromise and weakness, just where it would be likely to suffer a heavy impact.

Maybe so, but I'm guessing that's what you're going to get. Top quality, impact resistant plastic. Could be wrong of course.

You better be right otherwise Canon would look pretty foolish. This is not a Rebel. It's Canon's flagship made to be their ultimate rugged/reliable body. That is a major impact point. Shoddy materials are unacceptable on a $6000+ camera.

You'll note that Canon has increasingly begun using high quality plastics in some of their top lenses--e.g., the 24-70L II,, 16-35 f/4L IS, 100 f/2.8L, and others. And although some folks have complained about this, these lenses appear to be holding up just fine.

It's really a question of selecting the best material for the purpose. As I understand it, one of the reasons Canon has given for not including GPS in earlier 1Ds is that a GPS antenna would not work well if encased in a magnesium alloy shell. But now it appears that Canon has decided to incorporate GPS in the 1DX II, and so, it would seem, Canon has had to provide a means for radio waves to reach the GPS antenna--hence the uppermost section of the prism hump. The uppermost section is clearly a separate piece from the rest of the prism hump, and I"m guessing the reason for this is that while the rest of the prism hump (which is incorporated into the top plate) is magnesium alloy, the uppermost section is likely some sort of polycarbonate plastic. Could be wrong, of course, but I can't think of another reason Canon would have adopted this configuration. (I would also note that Canon seems to have taken a similar approach when it incorporated GPS into the 7D II).

And I have enough faith in Canon to believe that they've anticipated your concerns and taken steps to ensure that the new camera is sufficiently rugged.

But, as others have said, best to just wait and see.

Please remember that Canon has a LONG history of posting -awful- example shots, though.

Some plastics are literally bulletproof. I always worry about holes, gaps and where dissimilar materials come together. I'm not that interested in GPS. I know where shots were taken.

Although my 24-70mk2 seems fairly solid I know of another photographer who dropped it and the plastic barrel cracked. Doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. I could have been lucky but I smashed my 24-70mk1 twice at games and the thing never blinked. It's hard to argue with that tank like build.

Time will tell. Sports photographers are not exactly easy on gear. If it's a weak point it will get a reputation fairly quickly.

I don't get the need for gps either. I'm with my camera when I take the photo.

Yeah, I don't get that as well. Wifi seems like a higher priority then GPS. If you are going to compromise the build at least make it worth while.

Not really interested in the 1Dx II or even a cheaper used IDx. I prefer the UI and pixel density of the 7D series, which choice my wallet wholeheartedly supports.

But I'm excited on the prospect of many of these features migrating to the 7D MIII.

My need is the opposite - GPS is high on my priority list...Two years ago I traveled to many locations across China and last year I was on a 3-week long trip to several countries in Southeast Asia and I took thousands of pictures with my 5D3 (sans GPS) and after the trips I couldn't even remember where some of the pictures were taken...after a year or two it gets even worse...I can't even tell which countries they were taken at.... Not knowing the location of the pictures doesn't harm me or kill me but it would be really nice to have the pictures geotagged.

ffs this forum just gets worse and worse.

An unannounced camera, rumoured pictures and you are complaining about how robust one feature is.

And how the camera isnt worth it.

When canon have proved every time that the sum total of the upgrades are well worth it.

Ok, I can see that. I guess I never thought of using gps for this reason. I travel but usually tend to know where I am each day. Obviously in a strange location it could be helpful to tag the photos.

It may be a rethinking of who Canon believes buys 1D cameras. Wildlife photographers might like GPS for locations. I think photojournalists though would prefer Wifi for easy transfer of photos.

Or it could be that Canon likes the revenue from a $600 Wifi option.

One thing to keep in mind — and it should be plainly obvious — is that Canon and all camera manufacturers build all models for a market that is larger than one person and a market that does not exactly match your or my specific desires for what should and should not be included...

I never found WiFi to be fast enough for the two bodies on which I have it, or for the situations in which I shoot, so not too useful for me. GPS on the other hand is necessary for me, so much so that I bought Canon's GP-E2 receiver and use it when out in the field.

Out of curiosity, what are you using GPS for in your workflow or final product?

I realize my situation is quite unique but I'm involved with research of Whooping Cranes. In the past I would use a spotting scope to see their bands, a handheld GPS to get location, a watch for recording time, and I would write down all this information along with behavior and habitat on a data sheet. Now I can get all this data from a single photo. Still need my Kestrel weather meter.

Only rumours at this stage but 20.2MP is a little disappointing, really thought 24MP would be offered. Every pixel counts for birding. Still if the performance is better than 1DX then that's the most important thing. Just might need to consider a crop camera as well when reach is an issue, although if all AF points can be used with f/8 combos, the 500 + 2x will come out a lot more often I suspect.
