I think that last statement you made "his 1/240 hand waving looked better to me than the 1/48" is the key, and it's your right to feel that way.
In an objective manner, I can clearly see that the 1/240 example has significantly less motion blur than the 1/48 example. So if my definition of better is "has less motion blur" then I would agree that the 1/240 looks better.
But as I said in my previous post, that's not my metric for "better" and again it shifts depending on what I'm trying to achieve with each video. For *most* of my videos (vacation, travel, museums, nature) I'm trying to capture what my eye sees. And that means the video should show motion blur when my eye sees it, and not show it when I don't see it. Depending on how quickly I wave my hand side to side, I will either see blur or I won't. To the greatest degree possible, I'd prefer my videos (where I'm going for a realistic vs a stylized look) reflect that, and I find the 180 degree rule, when I shoot at 1/24 or 1/30 (or nearest fraction) to achieve that. When I'm going for stylized looks, or slow motion capture/playback, that's when I'll crank both the frame rate and shutter speed up.
Again, that's me, and that's what I'm aiming for when I capture videos. Others will want different results and that's fine. It doesn't render my, their, or that YT video guys' opinion complete BS. You found that video difficult to watch, and I respect that. I'm not in your head and I don't see what you see. But it didn't bother me in the slightest.

Thanks for sharing those videos @artsupreme.
They do help clarify things for me. Mark Bones' recommendation to not use shutter speed to control exposure, but it's okay to use it for its effect, seems to make some sense. In photography, I'm used to using aperture to control depth of field and shutter speed to control motion blur. Frequently I'm short of light, so I use ISO to compensate and get the desired exposure. I know some people insist on shooting video at "native/base" ISOs, but I've seen other folks claim that there is almost no noticeable impact from shooting at other ISOs (especially if you're not using Log gamma), in which case using ISO to control exposure seems much more convenient than using an ND filter.
The other video's demonstration of the differences in the effects when slowing down higher frame rate video versus playing it full speed was interesting.
Can someone explain the meaning of the terms "jitter" and "soap opera effect"? Both of them seem to have a negative connotation, but I don't really understand what I should be seeing in the example footage that corresponds to them.

Unlike real life motion as seen through your eyes, video is captured as a number of discrete, sequential frames. These are captured at different rates per second, whether that’s 24, 30, 60, etc.
The higher the frame rate, the “closer” you get to real life eye perception because you are literally packing more consecutive frames into a second of time. The inverse is also true. The lower the frame rate, the “temporal space” between each individual frame is more perceptible. A more dramatic and noticeable example is stop motion animation, which is usually done at 12-18 frames per second. It feels more like a sequence of still frames than fluid motion. This is what I think they mean by “jittery” in the video.
What motion blur then achieves, especially for lower frame rates, is to ease the perception of fluid motion between frames. The eye sees a “whoosh” and the brain is no longer (or less) distracted by the fact that this was simply a sequence of X number of photos within a second. And of course as the video outlines pretty well, this can be adjusted to taste or creative need.
As for the “soap opera effect” this is something that started showing up in TV sets around the early 2000s (or at least that I remember). Manufacturers (and retailers) leaned pretty hard on the concept (as above) that packing more frames into a second of video is closer to real life fluid motion, so by default it must always be better - right? So they implemented this feature (under a bunch of different arbitrary, marketing-centric names like TrueMotion, etc) that interpolates between video frames to produce high frame rate playback for everything. People called it the “soap opera effect” because before that, they were only used to seeing higher frame rates in soap operas and daytime TV, not in film. So watching any film that was traditionally shot at 24 FPS being run through that algorithm, made it feel soap opera-like.

Winter gathering of Bald Eagles. Most years the temperatures get cold enough to freeze most streams and Bald Eagles head south along the Mississippi River for the easy fishing below the Dams. This shows hundreds of the eagles perched on the west bank in the Missouri trees below Lock And Dam 21 near Quincy,IL. Jan 15, 2025 shortly after sunrise.
R5 MKII RF200-800 with RF1.4X, which I did not need for this, but it was 3 degrees F and I did not want to remove it. This was kind of an afterthought, as I was there to try to get close-ups of the eagles and a landscape was the last thing I had planned. 4k slow motion 119.88fps on a 29.97 fps timeline.

Wow, I had no idea there were gatherings of bald eagles like that, very cool. Are there several photographers sitting out there doing target practice all day?

Very cool video, Dave. What an amazing gathering of Bald Eagles. Great job on this very long and level pan.
Cheers,
Rudy

It can be very short lived here. Some years the number are big just 2-3 days, some years 7-14, depending if the super cold(around 0 at night) holds. I was at this spot 4 different days over 10 days, and 2 days had 1 other serious photographer there. The other 2 I was alone, except cars driving in and out of parking lot of boat ramp. It was very cold! Further north it may last a little longer. They scatter fast when it warms and water opens up. I have read they do not like to be around other eagles and do it out of necessity. They do not play well and steal from each other all the time. Fun to watch.

Lots of Bald Eagles flying and looking for fish below the Lock and Dam 21 at Quincy Illinois. This shows the large numbers of eagles at any time. This was the same morning as my earlier video showing the hundreds of eagles in the trees on the Mississippi River west shoreline. R5MKII RF 200-800 4k 119.88fps on 29.97 timeline.

Wonderful family video, Howie. Great memories for years and years to come!
How would you compare the R5ii and the RED? What lens(es) were on the RED?
Cheers,
Rudy

I love a Dad who lugs around the big guns with a fully loaded stroller and kids. My Dad did that for us and I can now appreciate his hard work to capture all the slides and super 8 of us growing up. Your kids will love to watch this when they get older.

Im not sure how long ago it was, but for years members had pleaded with Fred M to add a dedicated Video forum entry at the root level of FM, to no avail… perhaps we should try again, and catch Fred after a good whiskey 😁

Thanks to you and everyone for the kind words. My big reason for getting the R5 ii was better video. The goal was to have one camera for stills and video to make life easier for me. Lugging around the RED and my R5ii with the 28-70 F/2 is no fun. I really like the image quality out of the R5 ii. I can get really good quality out of it and can get it to closely match the RED. But even with that, I just love image from the RED. It's not a massive difference, but the dynamic range, texture, and color are just a notch above the canon. But I'd say the R5ii gets me about 90% there. In good light it might be a little harder to tell the difference between the two. The main lens used on the RED was the Laowa Argus 18mm T/1. So a 28mm FF equivalent.

It's plug-in with luts, grain, and halation and other effects to enhance your footage. It's been around a while. Resolve came out with their own built-in version of it, call film look. So you similar capabilities for free
