A Little Taste of Canada in the Winter
Each season I choose a bird species to focus on and get to know better. Last spring it was Horned Grebes, in the summer it was Pied-billed Grebes, the fall saw Sandhill Cranes and now this winter it's Snow Buntings, which happens to be one of my favourite Canadian winter birds. I'm working on a series of videos about Snow Buntings and this is first of the bunch.

Great video Rudy! The production was top notch as usual.
Very nice voice over as we expect from you!
The wind effect made me feel the cold wind.
Looking foreward to the next ones.

Bald Eagle and an American White Pelican have a very near miss. 1 minute long. The Bald Eagle was diving and catching a fish, and an American White Pelican was committed to landing at a 90-degree angle to the Eagle. The pelican adjusts a little, the eagle protects the fish pulling it under it's tail, and they just barely miss. At the end, the eagle transfers the fish from talons to beak. 40 images made into a one minute slideshow video. R5 MKII RF 200-800. Taken 10 minutes after sunrise below Lock and Dam 22 at Saverton, Missouri on Jan 27, 2025 This shows the size difference of the two birds very well.

Four short clips of flying Bald Eagles. These are too short for their own video, but too good not to share. They are not without minor flaws, but I really like it when you can really see the Eagles up close. Captured below Lock and Dam 21 near Quincy, Il on Jan 15, 2025.

Another R5ii and RED V Raptor combo video. For those interested in how these two compare, this is a better video. I didn't try super hard to match them. The red clips have been zoomed in to a 16:9 ratio and the R5ii footage was left in DCI 4k. So essentially, the red clips will be a bit taller. The 28-70 f2 and rf 35mm 1.4 were used with the R5. For the RED, I used the Laowa argus 18mm T1 and 7 artisans RF 25mm T1.05. Love both those lenses.

Hi Howie,
What a delightul family video this is. I just love it! The scenes are so endearing with great slow motion, great audio, perfect music choice and magical backlighting. I love the closing scene with the kids dancing in slow motion. Masterfully done!

Thanks for the kind words from you and Dave. I feel like I just got to the point where I'm comfortable with grading, picking, and sequencing the shots. The thing that is still difficult, is music. We are planning a big trip to Europe this summer and I'm already looking for music for that video that doesn't exist yet

Great work Howie. Speaking of music where did you find the song you used? You can’t just use any song on YouTube correct? I could see this being a challenge because music is a very important piece of the edit.

Howie,
Music is a challenge for me also. I have found some nice, free music on Pixabay. Some you have to give a credit, some not. Some music I have used from Pixabay, YouTube says they may have to mute in certain countries. Also, YouTube has some to use(I have not had as much luck there). Also, your editing program may have some you can use.
HTH,
Dave

Almost all of the music I use these days comes from Musicbed. It's a subscription service and the price is about $330 a year. It's steep, but just a single song can have a huge impact on what a video communicates, so I suck it up. Even with that, it's a chore to go through to huge library to find something that is perfect.

Yep, music is just as important as the visuals, so I'm going to have a tough time uploading to youtube because I'm very selective with my music and it wouldn't be allowed on Youtube.

I'm continually amazed by your videos Rudy and Dave! I'm super jealous too not living near an area that sees anywhere near that amount of eagle traffic. I really need to do research where the best spots are for eagles (and other birds of prey) that are within driving distance from where I am.

Well, I set a deadline for myself of Feb 1st to try and get something exported from Resolve and I missed it by a few days. But last night I was able to finally export a mashup of some of my clips from Indonesia. This is in no way a final edit, but simply a sample test for a youtube quality check as I've never uploaded anytihng to youtube. I would normally never upload a sample that's nowhere near complete but I figure this is progress for me to have finally have finished the whole process from Davinci import to Youtube upload. Some notes:
- The note about 4 men becoming true surfers is an inside joke to a few friends
- After uploading I see I have an aspect ratio issue which was the purpose of this test
- There was no stablization done and I was filming handeld on a boat so that explains some of the shakiness
- You can see the rivers of trash at the beginning which are flowing into our oceans on a daily basis
- The music thing is going to kill me and probably prevent me from sharing on youtube. I'm super picky with music for my slideshows as it's just as important as the visuals. Like Howie said above, I don't see myself searching for free music that I like as I already have my favorite music that I want to use and it won't be allowed on Youtube. IMO, the music/audio is what brings the edit together as I will be syncing my cuts to it and pacing the clips with music, so this will be tough to do for Youtube. As for this sample I just added a place holder chant to run for the whole 16 minute test
-Learning Davinci is quite fun. I still have no idea what I'm doing in there but at least I know the basics of how to cut/arrange clips now. As for color grading, I'm totally clueless and need to learn how to use the color tab so I can dial in the footage. I used a bunch of different color settings in this video for different scenes. Anyone know if there's a way in the color tab to put the playead on one frame and then scroll through the different luts wtih a simple L/R key stroke? Right now I'm having to click on each lut thumbnail for a preview and I'm hoping there's a more efficient way to scroll through Lut previews.
Anyway, the goal of this sample clip was to watch it on a large 4K TV to check video quality and it looks pretty good on my TV's. My TV adds a lot of contrast so I'll have to navigate how to process for viewing on different devices. I'm going to leave it up for a few days for some friends to watch and then probably take it down and start learning the things I need to start a final edit. It's long and repetetive but definitely serves it's purpose for a quality check on a large TV. If anyone has a chance to view on their large TV let me know your thoughts on video quality. Changing the youtube settings to 4k (2160) is key as Youtube defaults to 1080p for most players. The audio is going to be quite a task to figure out but for now you can mute it or play your own music instead of the place holder chant I have in there.
"TOAL" is a term I use for "trip of a lifetime"...little did I know it happens to be the name of a goth band on Youtube
Gear used:
R5, R5II, DJI Mini 3 Pro, RF 70-200 2.8, RF 14-35
Clog2 & Clog3
24fps and one clip of 120fps
4K DCI (during the process realized my drone doesn't match this format so I need to learn how to change in Davinci)
This 16 minute 4K export only took about 5 minutes on a baseline M4 Macbook Pro that I used for this. Uploading to Youtube took almost an hour for a 5.87GB file. Not sure if I'm exporting the correct format but that's it for now.

Thank You, Carlo!
We do have eagles in large numbers for maybe 2 weeks in coldest of winter. Then we have a growing resident population we can see off and on throughout the year.
Funny, here in the midwest, we are jealous of all the birds we see folks posting from your California and wish we had some of them(and the year round weather) to photograph.

Brett,
Looks like you are doing pretty well. I did not time to watch all 16 1/2 minutes, but did preview most parts.
On my 4k 31 inch computer monitor it looked great.
I did preview a smaller portion on my TV(only 1080p TV)
It also looked fine.
Also, your sound was good.

Thanks very Carlo. much appreciated. Unfortunately, we have almost no Bald Eagles or any other kind of Eagles around Ottawa Ontario. But one amazing bird of prey we are blessed with every winter are Snowy Owls coming down from the Arctic for 4 months. In fact, people fly in from all around the world for 1-week photography workshops just for these Owls. Here's a little sample:

Camera: Canon R5
Lens: RF100-500
Editing: Davinci Resolve 18

I also didn't have time to watch all of it but got to scan and watch snippets of everything. Was left sort of wanting to see some surf action, especially when I saw a shot of someone preparing their surfboard.
That aside, I think this all looked very good. The scenery is beautiful. Really liked that shot at sunset with the waves spraying in the distance.
Grading looks good. Clean without being clinical and does justice to the tropical colors.
I've been too busy with work to do any shooting and it's a little frustrating, but I'm hoping to be able to contribute more soon. In the meantime I'm enjoying popping in here when time allows and seeing what everyone's posting. Keep em coming.
