I agree 100%. What a pro needs should not be the yard stick for evaluating our cameras.

You need to stop using the A7CR, Denver Steve.
It only has one card slot. It's not a serious camera for professionals!

Thanks for that. 😃 As you already know. That's horse-#*#*. No film camera ever had dual spools. Most (vast majority) of digital cameras don't have two slots. It's just someone's way of saying "I have a camera with two memory slots, so if you don't you're not a professional." I'll let my 40-year list of satisfied international clients know if they see me with an a7cr that I'm no longer a seasoned professional. 🙃

And I own an A1 and a 6400 and am buying an A7CR.

We both own and use cameras with both 1 and 2 card slots. Which is the bottom line - horses for courses.

I can't imagine the slight weight difference between the bodies is *that* significant to warrant the REAL risks involved.

YMMV

You either carry backup cameras / lenses with you or you don't / can't. Those are FAR more likely to fail on you than the card alone. I have had multiple lens and body failures over the years.

The obsession with dual card slots is just cringe to the maximum.

You’re attacking the wrong guy. I shot medium format digital for 10 years and Leicas . Single slot but running two 50k backs was not a financial option but having the ability to have 2 slots is a bonus and helpful as well. I never ever said your not Professional for using 1 slot. I have seen the failures. I taught well over 400 people on workshops and seen the failures. That’s all I said but as usual around here having Professional experience apparently is not a wanted benefit as it goes against the bad advice given on this forum. So I’m out on this . My bigger issue is other limitations that no one talks about. I won’t waste my time explaining them again as no one gives a crap to actual listen to good advice. Not my worry

The logic and sense of advice should stand on its own without having to state it’s coming from a pro post after post. Personally, I find it gets old and I got it the first time. There are a lot of non pros on this forum whose comments and opinions I value just as much.

Returning to the TS's comment, plenty of people are buying the a7cr for sure. It has started many interesting discussions like what is the best single lens or lens kit that can leverage the compact size and high-res sensor of the camera. I'm sure the demand for more compact and higher-quality gear will push innovation in that direction, which is great news for everyone, really. Imagine an A1 sensor on the A7RV body with A7CR's weight at A6700's price (I know, I'm asking for too much)

Even if we don't get this exact camera, we are getting close, with A1C, or A9C becoming possibilities instead of a pipe dream. If and when those cameras are released, similar threads will pop up because there will be new rounds of gear optimization. For people just starting out, listen to the pros, but with a healthy pinch of salt unless you are trying to go pro yourself. By definition, a professional is someone who transforms his/her photographic vision into $. A casual shooter has slightly different priorities.

So for casual shooters, embrace the plethora of choices, and enjoy the process of self-discovery as you figure out what kind of a photographer you are and which gear works best for you. If a purchase doesn't work out, I'm sure the folks at the B&S section will be more than willing to help (and capitalize on ).

Actually, I find it irrelevant whether one is a professional, hobbyist, newcomer to photography, or whatever. The information regarding a camera, in this case an a7cr, is either relative or not. What IS relative is that everyone's thoughts and questions about a camera, or whatever sub-forum is being viewed, are just as important. That's why when a participant chimes in that no serious/professional photographer would ever use (pick your topic) they open up the can of worms that results in someone responding "as a professional..... I certainly do that without problem or issue". I see that far more than someone joining in with "I'm a pro and your opinion doesn't matter". There's no need for a professional Sony and a hobbyist Sony forum to exist. What we have is a Sony forum that all can, and do, participate in. I have noticed that usually when someone contributes by saying something ignorant about "no pro would" or something similar, they end up having to then submit multiple posts trying to fend off the villagers with pitchforks, 😊 because they were fundamentally wrong with their first assertion because no two pros' needs (just like everyone else) are the same. As a semi-retired "pro" and university photography instructor, I learned a long time ago that the best photography comes from the best photographers - not necessarily the best equipment.

DenverSteve - I couldn’t agree more!

I’ve been a “hobbyist” using Olympus, Nikon, Pentax and Sony digital equipment for at least 23 years and I feel like I’m capable of making a judgment about the importance of two card slots for my use (just one simple example). I don’t need someone to tell me my opinion isn’t as good as theirs because they are a “pro.” As mentioned above, I find it condescending.

I hate to go off on this, but I guess it’s been getting under my skin for quite a while and I apologize for venting.

Well it's been about 2 months since posting this and glad to see it has sparked some conversation. Not sure where the Pro talk comes from. I agree the C line is not designed for Pros unless it's a pro that wants to use it on personal stuff. But that's here nor there. I stand by my statement 2 months in that it is a true swiss army knife for Sony (photographically speaking, not a video guy). So much so I have sold off my RV's at this point and have not missed them really at all. I honestly hope it sells well even though I have seen no real proof of that. I plan to be first in line for the CRII. Until then I will be enjoying the form factor as it is. Quirks/annoyances and all

p.13 #12 · Why are people not buying Sony's Swiss Army knife "A7cr"

I find it kind of interesting that many of the features that folks say are deficiencies or are missing from the the A7CR are things that would seem to require a larger and or heavier body and already exist in some of Sony's larger bodies. It seems to me the point of the A7CR is to offer a high resolution sensor and such high end features as can be accommodated in a smaller, lighter body. That is as it is. If that works for you (it did for me) then buy it (I did). If not, then buy the camera that suits you better. They're certainly out there. For me, I now have the A7CR and small lenses when I want/need to go light and bigger bodies and lenses when those are more appropriate. I'm very happy with the results from both and I think I will continue to be so for many years to come. Again, horses for courses.

Not sure what "features" your talking about. I'd be curious to hear what you think will make the camera bigger. A tilt screen and higher res EVF would not make the camera any bigger. Those are items I expect to be improved in version 2. Like I said before it's obvious this was a choice by Sony to omit them because the RX1Rii which is 9 years old has both and is smaller. I'm fairly confident EVF technology has improved in 9 years as well. So please lets not be silly and tell me it could not be done. Other things like LCD resolution would also not make the camera bigger. Are these things deal breakers to use the camera. Obviously not since I bought one anyway. Just want Sony to kit out the camera as it should have been for a high end , high MP compact. I don't really care if it costs more. Don't cut corners is all I ask. Simple really. For those more budget conscious there is the CII. So when people say these things exist in other cameras they do. But just not in the compact form factor that many of us want.

I'll let someone else travel down that road. RV is my favorite Sony Camera to date. Can't believe you can get all that for the prices they bring on B&S board. It's a steal

'I'm fairly confident EVF technology has improved in 9 years as well.'

Yes, is the a7RC's ~2.4m dot EVF the same in practice as the 2013 a7r's 2.4m dot EVF? Or is it 66% better, for reasons no one knows? What improved in the 'digital years' (like dog years) that separate these two eras? Not the tech gobbledygook, but the real world realised gains?

The word 'fairly' is important in the statement here, as it indicates doubt and uncertainty. Imagine having to wonder about this, when we in 2024 are awash with reviews and 'analysis' of all kinds. Strange because these are EVF cameras, you won't find a modern camera without one. (Leica will have to work their way into it soon enough).

If the a7CR had a better centrally located EVF, it would steal very significant sales from the full-featured A7RV. This way they get people to believe they need a second camera to go with their better equipped camera. 200 grams lighter. What a ploy.

I think it is stealing not only sales from the A7RV but also heartthrobs, which I think has disarranged some. During the holiday sales, the A7RV sold for significantly less than the A7Cr if you had EDU access. A sales promotion for the older camera.

In using the A7Cxx EVF, I see no problem. The magnification is about the same as the M11 -- .70 vs .73. I don't use MF a lot and when I do I magnify to focus--there is no problem doing that with the EVF. On the LCD, if I want to check focus, I have to magnify. But I also have to do that on the A1 and A9.

The more custom function buttons you have manual focus like switching from AF to Manual, Magnifier and such are faster in operation if you have more custom buttons. Just be aware of that functionality and maybe count up how many buttons you need to pull that off. On Sony sales that is not my business to concern any of us. They are doing just fine

I think I was using 3 custom buttons on my A7RV but at least two will work . It's about needs and how you shoot to be added up.

One solution to this is using really nice AF lenses that can go manual and I went this way than buying only manual glass lately but again that takes custom functions buttons to get through that process. Something to figure out for sure. I use manual focus a lot

Another trick is if AF glass I used the focus hold button on my glass and switched it to AF/MF control ( pick up a custom button like this ). I never found focus hold a useful feature set with AFC you just let up on the AF button is the same thing. There are a lot of tricks but im not wanted here to go over that stuff because according to this thread Pros are not wanted here.

I'll keep it clean and not respond to that BS. I would have killed for that kind of help decades ago with no internet

Judging from all here defending their better equipped A7R5, I think you nailed it. Pity some are so insecure.
