Well after looking at this thread, I ordered the 300 f.2.8 GM and the 2X TC that I plan to use on my A7RV. I already have a 1.4X that I occasionally use on my 70-200 f/2.8 GM II.
I have a copy of the Sigma 500mm DG DN, which is great, but I think that is going to my son to use on their A6700.

Thank you! Actually I had the 200-600 on another A1 for this show. I will never sell my 200-600 until the Mark II comes out. I need the versatility for a good part of airshows.
I wish Sony would release a 200-600G mkii soon, as I'm just not satisfied with the existing lense AF motors speed. Take care

The pictures of the F-35B are incredible. And the other pictures of the show in the 200-600 thread are also great.
I wish my 200-600 was lighter, but it's very sharp at 600mm f/6.7. I doubt I would see a significant difference with the 300 + TC2x with real life pictures. While a 300 f/2.8, 420 f/4, 600 f/5.6 in the bag is very tempting, I'm not sure it makes sense for someone like me who doesn't do sports or events where the 300 f/2.8 would be perfect. For birds/wildlife/airshow at 600mm, it may be difficult to reframe without a zoom. With that said, ~1lb of saving may make a bigger difference than I think when carrying during a few hours.

I really have no complain about the sharpness of the 200-600 at 600mm. It's my go to airshow lens if I bring only one lens. As I said it before, the main reason I bought the 300 GM is use it with the 2X TC to shoot hummingbirds at MFD in my yard, letting in a bit more light, a bit sharper, and makes a quite a bit larger hummingbird in the frame, the 200-600 is not really 600mm at MFD.

Nothing special, but first few shots out of the box at f/5.6 using the 2X TC and APS C mode on the A7RV in the backyard. The magnification is very good with the TC.-

I own the 2-6 and the 300mm 2.8. I can always tell the shots that are taken with the Sony big three .300.400.600 primes. There is a reason they cost more money. However to me the 300 is a bargain equal to the quality price ratio of the 200-600
Yes, it was very obvious from the start that the IQ is better with the 300 + 2X vs. 200-600 that I had. I also think the 300 f/2.8 or 420 f/4 will be good for deer and other wildlife when it gets a bit dark (e.g. early morning or evening hours).

about the MFD on the 200-600, did you try an extension tube ?
It seems to improve it significantly , see the difference at t=8:12:

No, I haven't tried an extension tube on the 200-600. I had one briefly on the 90mm macro lens. Doesn't it slow down the AF?
I believe Ronny Olsson tested the 200-600 with extension tubes on this forum. His macro work is stunning... Maybe ask him for more info?
