Putting the bare lens to work...I always found the 400GM was a bit tight at this Barred owl spot but 2.8 is critical to shoot flight in this area. The 300GM was the ticket.

Beautiful shots as usual. It may be worth noting the next gen Sony cameras are going to have higher MP sensors making the 300 even more versatile

Yeah the 300Gm seems like a perfect compliment to the 600GM. Sony has a very strong lens here... So few lenses can stand up to a 2x TC. After viewing so many great photos in this thread, I see a purchase in my near future take care

Thank you very much! Haven't had much opportunity to use this lens for birds. A few from today.

You are killing it in this thread too. I’m really interested in this lens and would use it mostly with a 2x for those metal birds. The 200-600 gives needed flexibility, but maybe not stellar sharpness. Of course, the 600 is ideal, but also a bit more $’s.

Jeff, you won't believe how light and compact this lens is until you actually hold it in your hand. In the last two years my usual airshow setup has been 200-600 on one A1, 600 GM+1.4TC on another A1. Next week if the weather is good, I will try the 300 +2X TC in place of the 600GM+1.4TC at the airshow in Binghamton, NY.
Photo dump from yesterday. I had the 600 GM+1.4TC with me too but I really wanted to give some serous time to the 300 GM+2XTC, I hadn't had the opportunity until yesterday. I like the sharpness I see. Occasionally the AF took a tad longer to initiate the focus on the targets, I used wide area. In his initial review of the 300 GM+2X TC when it was first released, Alex Fung on youtube said something like that too.
. But I could probably live with just the 300GM and TCs if I had to.
