Beautiful captures!! What are your thoughts on the 300GM with 2x TC? I am on the fence about this lense, or possibly moving to Nikon for their 600pf ( which means selling my A1 so I've been hesitant to do so as it's been a fantastic camera). Thanks

Thank you! It may sound crazy but the main reason I bought the 300 GM is to use it with the 2X TC to shoot hummingbirds in my yard at close distance. The hummingbird activities in my yard this year have been really slow so the 300 GM hasn't gotten used much. Compared to the 200-600 that I had been using for shooting hummers in my yard in the last several years, the 300 GM+2X TC provides slightly brighter aperture, slightly closer MDF and quite a bit larger image than the 200-600 at 600mm at or near MDF. I haven't had time to do a direct comparison yet in terms of sharness but the 300 GM is really light. I have the 600 GM too. I am keeping the 200-600 as my main airshow lens.
I think if close MDF is not a priority, Sony 300 GM's 2 meters vs Nikon's 600 PF's 4 meter, the Nikon 600 PF can be a very good lens for the size and sharpness.
Great info, thank you Douglas. Letting go the A1 to move to Nikon is proving very difficult decision. I have not invested in any expensive primes yet - but once I do there's no going back to another brand. Hence I am hesitant in making a such a decision. Take care
