More rumor specs for August 29th:

Sony a7CII:
33MP sensor of the A7IV
Bionz XR, AI processor
5 stops IBIS
10fps
100-51200 ISO
10 bit 4k60p, S-Cinetone
2,36 milion dot EVF
3 inch fully articulating LCD screen
759 AF points
Lens breathing compensation
One slot only

Sony a7CR:
Same body as A7cII
61MP sensor of the A7rV
8k recording like the A7rV
3 inch fully articulating LCD screen
One slot only
Other specs equal to the A7rV

Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II:
Optically superior to the first-generation lens
More compact

I fully expect the "fully articulating LCD screen" to mean the traditional flip-out screen... However, I'm reading that it actually means the same screen as in the A7RV (flip + tilt).

For me this is the deciding factor in purchasing this camera. I have a Q3 on backorder and will cancel it immediately if the A7Cii comes with the flip + tilt screen.

The A7C was a huge success for Sony. It sold beyond their expectations. I can see their reasoning to not change the evf when they don't have to, but it's an instant no for me.

I bought an A7C and just could not deal with the tiny EVF so got rid of it immediately. Extended arm held frame/shoot (cel phone style) is not for me. It's susceptible to camera motion (and for me not able to focus on the screen without glasses due to hyperopia). The A7CR will tempt me, but I'm probably happier keeping my A7RIV as a 2nd body.

For me an A7cR as described would be the ultimate travel camera. Issue would be that my A1has been a great companion for travel, and isn't going anywhere as it's also the perfect camera for the combo of action & blackout free silent shooting.

For those who would be looking at it as their only camera, I can see where the EVF, single card slot, and grip would be a bigger priority. For me I'd have to think about what backpack/bag the A7cR would be utilized in, and if the size difference between it and the A1 would make a material difference for me to justify the cash outlay.

I shoot fast paced and 4-6 hours at a time, so handling and ergonomics are very important for me. I use mostly EVF for stability... and shooting LCD style the whole time would kill my arms.

Similar goes for things like grip and button sizes. Smaller doesn't mean it's better for extended shooting. I find my hands and fingers get tired faster the more I have to curl them. I have a Fuji X-T4 and everything is made as small as possible. Not nearly as comfortable to use as chunkier DSLRs and Sony FFs.

What is everyone expecting for pricing on these 2 upcoming A7C models? Using the new A6700 vs previous A6600 for guidance, there were (substantial) hardware improvements and the front dial added, but no increase in cost at $1,399. Still uses a 2.36 million dot EVF and a single card slot, which kept the size down, and both of the new A7C models seem to have these same items per the rumored specs.

Sony will most likely raise the price on the V2 though to $1,999 for the A7CII. My guess for the A7CR is $2,899. US Pricing, not EU.

BTW, the A6600 is $400 off at $999, and the A7C is $200 off at $1,599 at Sony US.

I think some people are missing the point of the "C" series. It is not meant for professional work. It is an attempt to get back to the roots of a compact body. I left Nikon for the smaller Sony bodies and could easily see the future was mirrorless. Unfortunately it keeps getting bigger (which is fine to have bigger options, but they shouldn't force it down everyone's throat). If pro's buy this it will be for personal use most likely. I do agree Sony is hurting themselves if they continue with the existing EVF that came in the A7C. Not saying some don't mind it but their customer base would greatly expand if they put a better EVF in the new models. The Rx1rii was fine for me. Can't see why the spec's on that could not be implemented. That said I eventually bought an A7C and found I could live with the EVF. Didn't like it, but could live with it. What I couldn't live with I found out was 24mp. Yes, I learned I'm a MP snob. It's not that 24mp is bad. I have just been so Use to having more. Just can't beat the fact you have that flexibility to go into crop mode on an A7RV and get 26mp. The flip out screen drove me nuts as well. If the A7CR does have the A7RV screen mechanism and is 61mp it will be hard to not get one. Even if they keep the crappy EVF. The "C" line I consider more a complementary camera. I think it's a good strategy by Sony and I see them selling a lot more of these than say an A9iii for example. Hopefully some more rumors surface and provide some more answers.

Let’s be clear I had the A7c twice and I’m a working Pro. Mainly a backup but I still owned it and let’s also be clear I’m a huge advocate of Sony and helping all of you with your systems and you all know I do. But my obligation to this industry is also to be the asshole and call bad planing on it too. Really hate the angst us Pros get here. We are here to help you first and foremost and many of us been here a long time and more importantly are here to help hobbyists along the way. So seriously drop the attitude. I never ever treat hobbyist with an elitist attitude. Yea I am a great Pro but with that comes caring for products that we can all use. I have pointed to no one and no group of people in my comments but to Sony to build us better useful products Pro or not we want useful tools. I’ve been a Pro going on 50 years so I do deserve that respect. Im not whining I’m telling Sony what we should have. I’ve been a Leica ambassador and a Phase One ambassador. You don’t have to like me but at least show some respect for us Pros and what we do in our industry. Im out

I'm not even asking for an actual evf upgrade, just better magnification.
The a6600 has .71x and it's fine.
If the C line could just have that instead of .59x, with a proper eyecup...

Seriously, that too much to ask?

I'm not asking for it to be a pro camera, just pleasant to use.

Maybe not. Even though these rumored specifications are specific, they might still be unclear.

Yes, increased magnification would be great. 0.59x is a bit small, but it's still functional.

I don’t know, $3K for an A7CII just with the RV’s sensor seems nuts to me but I’m sure some would be all over it.

Does an EVF with a higher magnification either cost more or require more space than an EVF with a lower magnification?

I would imagine it may cost more but don't think it would need more space. Thats my guess but a 2nd card obviously would require more space. Honestly if I was going after one it maybe the 61mpx version that makes sense to me but in all of this price is a big question mark and sabotaging there own lineup by being to close to one another. They are still making the A74 which is dead aim at the cost side.

Look at this where does these fit in is the question. Looking at BH pricing new

Sony a7R V Mirrorless Camera 3898. 61mpx
Sony a7 IV Mirrorless Camera 2398. 33 mpx
Sony a7 III Mirrorless Camera. 1700. 24 mpx
Sony a7C Mirrorless Camera 1598. 24mpx but remember this was 1798
Sony a6700 Mirrorless Camera. 1398. 26mpx

Maybe 1900 for the 33 A7C and 2900 for the 61mpx version

Frankly forget the format the 6700 is the best deal here. Thats my take on it

Now for some of us that want to go the 61mpx version of this maybe the A7rv might be in trouble with sales. Landscape folks may jump all over the A7C 61mpx.

However you feel here it will be interesting to see where the price point is. The ultimate question is always going to come down to your use and what you shoot and if it's a second or even a third body . Or if its the primary one and only

BTW some specs have changed already. As always we can't shoot with a rumor so keep that in mind as well.

The rumor got updated.

From sonyalpharumors.com:

------------------------

I got some additional info about the A7CII and A7CR cameras including one correction: The A7cR does NOT record 8K as previously reported (there was a miscommunication from the source).

Sony A7cII:
– same Autofocus of the A7rV
– 5 axis stabilization
– 10fps
– Same LCD screen of the A7IV (so not the 4d fully articulating screen of the A7rV)
– 4k60p
– auto framing like the ZV-E1
– 2,36 viewfinder
– one card slot

Sony A7cR:
– same Autofocus of the A7rV
– Same IBIS of the A7rV
– 10fps
– Same 4d fully articulating LCD screen of the A7rV
– 4k60p 10bit 422
– 2,36 viewfinder
– one card slot

The difference between A7cII and A7cR: Sensor, likely the price, A7cR has the 4D fully articulating screen and IBIS of the A7rV. Compared with the A7IV and A7rV the new C series cameras will only have on slot. The A7cR will “loose” the 8K.

For me the 61mpx version makes more sense , sure it's more money but I look at money as the last comparative number not the first. Get what you want then figure out the cash.

Fred I have a feeling the rumor will change at least one more time.

While I wouldn't mind a larger EVF or a second slot, for me the complaints are overblown. Looking forward to the CII.

Just for the record reading the comments on a few forums . The complaints about this are pretty much EVF is first than comes the second slot than its the screen itself on its functions. This is not about individual needs sure you're happy but there thousands that are not. That alone hurts Sony sales so if Sony don't address their user base complaints than they lose money. It's pretty simple keep up with what your users want not trying to save a few bucks on the production of it. It's like buying a car you get a nice steering wheel but its missing a horn, is that okay. Look bottom line if there are no complaints to Sony than they do noting but refresh the existing. You can't survive if you don't innovate or grow your user base. Thats the point here its not about you or me as individuals its about the company of Sony. They are not paying attention to us the morons that buy this shit.

Seriously these might be some of the easiest fixes they can make but ignoring it is really not good business either.

But going back to you. You will buy it anyway but you still want the fixes. See they get the sale but you're still not happy with it. I worked in the Aerospace business as the chief photographer for 16 years and there you take this stuff serious because your controls fail , people die. Obviously this is different as no one is going to die over this but is it really different unhappy is still unhappy and you do not address your user base. Thats bad business. Just sayin

Seriously though enjoy your new A7cII.

I don't get the point of the EVF hate. If you need a full EVF then buy the A7 series. The whole point of a different line of bodies is to offer differentiation and not cannibalize a7 sales. If I'm not mistaken the "C" series are mainly designed for video/content creation. Lightweight second body for professional photographers is probably not their target.

No its not I certainly am not there target but to gimp on your functionality of your product is not smart either . Pro or not people still look inside them to use. Folks look at the overall scheme of things not your personal preference that means nothing to be honest. If you're swirling around in complaints then something is wrong with your product. This is not overblown. I have been a Pro for a long ass time having a viewfinder is very critical for a lot of shooting. Many types of photography its very hard not to have your eye pressed in to actually view/focus and shoot not to mention compose.
Look im being the devils advocate here. I like sony a lot and went in on the A7r was one of the first and they have grown very well. But im also the asshole that will tell them they are doing something wrong here. Ive been an ambassador to Leica and Phase One that's what we do is tell them they are making a mistake or pat them on the back as well. The EVF is an easy fix in my mind but I know it would probably cost them more to produce . Just raise the damn price than 50 bucks.

I just got a 6700 without a damn USB cord. REALLY is that okay too

Obviously this is sensitive to some users here . I will walk away with head up but to accept this from a OEM is wrong too . I have gotten a USB cord in the many of camera brands in digital since 1991 when I started with digital. Now we don't even get a dollar value USB cord. Im sorry that's stupid and looks bad even though I may have 20 of them laying around.

Have a great day folks .
