thank you very much. i also enjoy it very much. that is the KTK Railway (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kominato_Line) in Chiba Prefecture. using Tokyo Station as central travel reference it takes about an hour by train to get to Goi Station and the home of KTK.
i am in contact with them to assist with my meager capabilities.

"my only opinions are Z9 based. i have been using HE* for a while now. if there are artifacts i guess i need to get my eyes checked. pretty darn clean images."
I agree completely. I have shot over 400k images since the Z9 release and I have yet to see anything that makes me want to stop using HE*

not really, just using more space than needed at times. doesn't change the workflow. don't need to get massive cards since i don't use this camera for cinema work.

Will Nikon give the Z8 adjustable RAW sizes? I'd love to not have to shoot at 45MP all the time for RAW. Shot an event outside yesterday in midday sun, no mechanical shutter and no high speed sync were a big problem. Ugh, this camera may go back.
There is arguably no reason to offer lower resolution RAWs because more resolution is always better (all else equal), and they are already giving you the file size benefit in the form of HE* and HE options, which would be the sole remaining disadvantage of retaining higher resolution images. Even better, you still get 14bit files across all modes. If you are downsizing these images anyway for delivery, again there is no disadvantage, and down sampling from a higher MP file gives you better image quality than if it had been shot at a lower MP value. It's a win all round.
If you really wanted lower resolution files for some reason, you could shoot HEIF which is kind of like a 10bit JPEG and that gives you the option of ~45.5MP, ~25.5MP, and ~11.3MP (same MP options as the old D850 had for 12bit RAWs).
Regarding flash, the Z8 will sync up to 1/8000 in Auto FP in S or M modes. It has the same high speed sync options as the flagship DSLRs. Standard flash sync speed is 1/250, same as all the DSLRs. The scan speed of the Z8's sensor is also faster than a D6's maximum sync speed. You aren't losing anything there.

i realized later flash sync was user error and have now discovered it works very well, even outside. my Sony sell off might be approaching faster than i anticipated.

I haven't tried HSS yet as I recently picked up a Godox V350 for those rare times I use a flash at all. I didn't need a larger flash for what I do. Glad to hear it will work. I did update the firmware just to be sure as well. I recently sold off all my Sony lenses and A7RV. As good as it was it was nothing compared to my Z9 experiences.
And Nikon has further stated it is leveraging sales of the Z8 and Z9 to sell more Z fit lenses. It is likely the these highend MILCs have a tendency to be paired with telephotos.

The market once again proves itself to be an efficient judge of value. The Z8/9 cameras deserve to be rewarded with success. They are excellent cameras, and value priced.
Hopefully, Nikon will follow up with finally competitive Z6iii/Z7iii cameras. The market was also correct in punishing those cameras with poor sales. I still find my preorder of a Z7 to be the worst photography purchase I ever made. Thankfully, I was able to return it.
The market is efficient. There never was an anti Nikon conspiracy. The early Z cameras failed on their own merits, just as the Z8/9 cameras will succeed on theirs.

If for no other reason a LOT more people can shell out $4k then $5500.00. 2nd many have this thing about size and weight so will sway them in that direction. The overall mentality, since mirrorless came out, is its smaller and lighter so people got used to that concept. Sony has fostered it big time as well. Personally I wanted to go the other way. So the Z9 was for me.
p.58 #12 · Nikon unveils the highly anticipated Z8 camera!
In summer to fall weeks most of my work is on the water.
Back-up camera: Recently I've concluded there is no need for me to take a back-up camera. So it is the Z8 or the Z9.
I have never paid any attention to that smaller form factor referred to. My hand-size is XL and I like the Z9 grip over the Z8 grip. I feel like the bottom of my hand is slipping off the Z8. I just do not feel as secure holding the Z8. I know the Z9 would feel very secure because the battery grip lived on my D850
So, I have talked with the camera company I patronize most, and am considering buying a Z9 too, to test how they feel beside each other.
However, for me, there may be one factor against the Z9 grip. I like to shoot very low to the water. How far I can lower the camera hinges on what watercraft is being used. In the large canoe it is difficult to get very low. In the kayak it is much easier. I may be splitting hairs here but I do not think so. The bottom of the Z9 is lower than the Z8. If I am able to work right down to water-level, the bottom of the Z9 is prone to getting wet. And I would not even know it was happening.
If I stick with this Z8 I'll be happy with it. I already have a lens coat belt pouch that holds two more batteries. And I do not take long videos. Heat will not be a factor for me. I take only short clips and only if conditions are super stable.

Wouldn’t go that far on the conspiracy issue. We’ll never know the true extent of the lizard people’s conspiratorial acts until one faces a public trial.

Oh, I know how bad it was over here. There was a group that tormented us daily. They had Nikon circling the drain.
Well, we hear nothing from those boys now.
And btw, 1bwana1 (Steve) was not part of any of it. He was never a troll, though a few believed he was. No he was not. I know.
And Geoff was never trolling over here either. Nope, never. Again... I know.

And I hope there is no need to carry on about this. The only reason I responded Groob is to validate your comment.

Then someone must have canceled the conspiracy. Personally I don't buy it. Those same people who were critical of Nikon are now praising the Z8/9 and Nikon's progress towards recovery. They haven't changed who they are. Nikon just finally came up with a fully competitive camera and packaged it in two form factors. A great move by the way.
I believe they were sincere in both their criticisms, and now in their praises. Nikon earned both.

And you are probably correct about those same people praising the Z8/9 and Nikon's progress toward recovery. I am the personality type who does not initially see such things until someone points out that good.

We Nikonians are likely benefiting from the R&D invested by Nikon for some years prior to 2018 to build the Z System. Their strategy to launch 40-50 lenses by 2025 required careful planning, alongside big commitments supporting teams of expert engineers. They obviously learned a lot from the R&D invested into the Nikon 1 system, when Nikon introduced several leading features in 2011.
During the pandemic, with parts shortages and quarantines etc, certain notorious youtube channels, and websites (such as petapixel, mirrorlessrumors) fed the internet rumor grapevine with rubbish. This was the conspiracy of a struggling Nikon about to close its imaging business, because the company had written off assets etc, and wound down consumer camera production (its Entry-Level DSLRs and Point-and-Shoots). These reports ignored the obvious Nikon was cranking up production of the carefully planned Z System.
Since the 2nd half of 2018, the company has grown its Mirrorless system from basically zero to its current totals of 40 Z Lenses and 8 Camera models. Nikon's latest progress report states that mirrorless cameras now make up 80+ % of its camera sales https://www.nikon.com/company/ir/management/midtermbusiness/pdf/2023/0511e.pdf
Beyond numbers sold of a camera model, there are other strong signals in the sales data. More Lenses are sold than Cameras. The 2022 Nikon document reports the Lens:Camera sales ratio range from 1.61 for 2021 to 1.81 for 2022 and dropped slightly to 1.65 for 2023.
The latest 2023 Financials report Nikon aims to have 50+ Z mount lenses on sale by 2025 with a 2 to 1 Tie Ratio. The Imaging Business has become its highest earning sector and this sector receives its highest R&D budget

To be clear, my comment was purely a joke—and not an underhanded one about certain commenters here. It was a nod to the wild conspiracies that have engulfed factions of political movements in the USA. Perhaps the reference was a bit too obscure. Btw, I count Steve as a friend. It certainly wasn’t directed at him.
