I'm getting the feeling that the B&S board is going to have a few A1's for sale here soon. I'm surprised at the amount of people that have the A1 and are willing to contemplate the RV.

There's been several in the last few weeks....mine was one of them.....it was a hard decision though because I really loved the A1. For what I shoot, the RV just seems a better fit (no sports, no BIF....). The focus bracketing and IBIS were the main factors. I may have made a mistake, wouldn't be the first time (nor the last either ). If so, I'll just get another A1....we'll see pretty soon!

I'd suspect that nearly everyone that bought an A1 who would remotely consider the A7Rv as a replacement isn't pushing the A1 to its max, and that using the highest end capabilities of it are edge cases for them.
I also suspect that many people making this trade down are going to forget how brutal a slow reading sensor is for certain shooting, and how annoying blackout can be. Hope they don't sell their A1s first

GASSSSSSSSSS
Nothing wrong with that as it keeps the camera industry money machine flowing. Win/win for all involved !
As a current A1 owner, I'm leaning toward RoamingScott's comment above...for now 😉

Just got a push notification from B&H that if you preorder by 6pm EST it ships today. They definitely ordered more than demand for once
Many people have said the A7R4 is a nice companion body to the A1...and in that regard, the A7R5 will be even better. In no world is it a direct replacement if you're actually using the A1 as intended.

My order is shipped as well. I am in SF Bay Area and the ETA is Dec 7. I doubt it will be delivered in time given my past experiences with FedEx, though.

The ability to flip the lcd in vertical orientation is also huge and imho. The new AF object recognition might be a great addition…seen plenty of A1’ers crying for these features in an A1 firmware release.

Received mine yesterday. Coming from an A7C and A7RIII, the camera is a significant upgrade in almost every way. Only have tested it briefly in very poor indoor mixed lighting.
Some observations on the limited usage so far.
Pros
The AF is a big jump from both the A7C and A7RIII.
Eye tracking in the viewfinder/screen is updating constantly and finds and tracks the eye much quicker and consistently. Profile shots and odd angles do not seem to throw it off. It finds the face and eye much earlier on the subject when at a distance.
The viewfinder and screen are also a big improvement over the A7RIII and way better than the A7c
I don't really do much video but the eye af and tracking are game changers when compared to the A7RIII. A7C is still very usable if not as consistent at tracking eyes.
Ergonomics are much improved over the A7RIII, I had not realized how much the body has changed/improved.
Menus are new to me still but seem to be much easier to grasp and intuitive when trying to find a setting. I have my custom modes dialed in for the A7RIII so I don't think this is a huge issue.
Colors/White balance seems much more pleasant and accurate to my eyes (may not be for everyone)
Cons:
Weight compared to A7C
Price
Compared to the A7RIII, the images don't really appear night and day better when looking at jpegs but the white balance and colors do seem to be more pleasing.
The ibis is definitely improved for shooting static subjects compared to the A7RIII. I "feel" that I can shoot a stop or more slower on the shutter at the same focal length.
I haven't really used the flippy LCD much but I'm sure it will come in handy as I am using the LCD more frequently on the A7RIII lately and definitely on the A7C.
Finally, the wifi/ftp/bluetooth connectivity to phones and ftp servers on the A7RIII was terrible at best. The A7RV is much better in connecting and maintaining a connection. Allowing transfer of files and working with apps like monitor + and Camrote.

Yes. We A1'ers might like to have some of that new A7rV AF/AI juice firmware implanted into our A1's but honestly the A1 AF is already outstanding and super duper responsive. I don't think anyone with an A1 is going to miss their shot if not and I don't think there is a yet to be awakened AI chip hiding in the A1.
But as usual, Sony makes it easy enough maybe even prefers 😉 A1'ers to buy the A7rV and "have" the A7rV's latest greatest too right along side their A1's. In this forum it will not be uncommon to see many shooting both the A1 and the A7rV one bought new and the other used or the other way around. Why not.
Personally, I think we will see a few more features and/or improvements to A1 firmware in the not too distant future, but also if we want access to some of those new A7rV features, we just have to but the A7rV. Seems like a tried and true, well orchestrated product and marketing plan if you ask me.
The new swivel/pivot/tilt screen in the A7rV does look to be winner...hope to see much more of that on all new Sony models too.

Im looking at what I am shooting versus what I need . The A1 is king no question about it and if I wanted to stay electronic shutter then no question the best choice. BUT BUT BUT looking at my A7IV for instance at I paid 2300 dollars. I could easily say screw it blow the mechanical shutter in 2 years and throw the thing in the trash. Do the math at 40K per images on mechanical shutter when will that shutter say bye bye lets say for instance it kicks out in 120000 and that's being friendly. Than lets say of me for instance if I can still avoid LED banding and don't really have to be QUIET when shooting the I have anti flicker, variable shutter in mechanical to adjust the banding out . Plus im sitting in a ballroom with 2 thousand people im taking less financial risk of losing a 6500 camera or getting damaged plus im not the only one shooting but have a assistant that does a lot of it. Then you look at this from a real business risk reward perspective. Im not stupid been at this for decades I don't just talk about this stuff its ingrained in my DNA . Been all over the planet and risks are involved shooting . Plus honestly between you , me and the fence post having a lets say with lens in hand im looking at a monopod that's worth 9 grand ready to fall be stolen or shot for than you do think lower risks. And I am at risk, no doubt about it. Do I love my A1 absolutely and that decision to maybe move on is not an easy one. I know the features but I also can cheat this better than almost anyone. I shot this shit with a A7RII an got by. Than LED was not involved back then. The LED issue is fairly new and all the lights we rent for Production which is at least 90 lamps for the stage work is all LED. Besides that Im not going to have to worry about that 9 grand when I walk out of the room. Less sweat with a 2300 camera and 70-200
Now all of this is consideration for what you do , you need and what your exceptions are . Not many people can do that better than me. I know exactly what I need . None of this decision making process is easy or not about doing my homework. I know there are a lot of Pros going through these same decisions. If I shot birds or even needed 30 FPS then decision is over. I don't even shoot 3FPS and never shot birds they can write checks.
Now none of that whole thing was about the A7RV feature sets that are reasons to look at. I could simple not put this camera on line if I can do it all with a A7IV and not even risk it. I have that option too or use sparingly. Or take the A1 offline
Stuff to think about digest and maybe make a decision to push on. I lost the A1 than I know I lost out on its feature sets too and that aint easy to swallow
I do like this A7RV and its features except for electronic shutter. Other than that its a brilliant option

We will be right back at this type of discussion when the A7V gets introduced in 6 months with no viewfinder blackout, ~40mp, 4K120, 21fps and low rolling shutter for 2999. One can dream

I can boil this down way more simply for you. If you don't shoot birds, any modern camera will do. You can wax and spin GAS into money well spent 1000 ways to sunday, but most cameras, across most brands, are more than enough for 99% of people.

No there is no electronic shutter like the A1 and if really need to be quiet, silent and not in anyones face than your out. Birds don't pay Pros we work for clients that have needs you need to acclimate, regardless of money or no checks. Thats the part many hobbyist don't even understand.

Why are cameras that make a shutter sound suddenly verboten? Yes, it's NICER to have a totally silent camera, but those cameras are so new that I can't imagine any venue or client would care about such a thing. Genuinely curious.
Most modern mech shutters are so dampened compared to the old machine gun DSLR monsters that it seems like a totally moot point to me.

Really Scott. thought you would actually might get it. Go shoot a CEO on stage in a ballroom giving a speech and get told your too freaking load. Seen it lived it and im not walking away from a 2 grand check. Anyway im out just wanted to make a point and don't care to go on. Its my BD
Please there are many types of photography open your eyes to the many venues that take place in this world. Not all of it is outdoors . I was just at a wedding 6 stills going to town . I almost got up and threw them the hell out of the church and im a guest. My wife had to hold me down that's how pissed I was

I highly doubt any of this. No CEO expects every camera to be silent. Every camera, save for 1 or 2 flagships for every brand, makes noise. No one outside of photo forums thinks cameras are dead quiet.
Anyways, if that's such a deal breaker for you, you'd never be considering the A7R5 in the first place in lieu of an A1, no matter how cool the flippy screen is.
