Nothing really surprising or groundbreaking in the a7RM5. It is basically what I expected. Not sure if I like the unmarked, custom dial replacing the dedicated Exp Comp dial. I'm sure I'd adapter to it. But I would not want to shoot this new body in parallel with one of the other style bodies. Too many handling differences.

Since none of the other cameras share this layout, the a7RM5 is an island unto itself at the moment. Perhaps this is a glimpse of what an a9M3 may look like? If so, I'd probably follow that migration path and go from the a7RM4 + a9M2 to a7RM5 + a9M3. If not, probably going to two a1's would make better sense. All I have to do is post some crappy cat videos on the youtubes and I can get 'em for half price.

No compelling reason for me to upgrade right now.

Looks like a solid iterative upgrade to me. Love the new LCD! The fully articulating and the tilt screen crowd all have their cake and get to eat it too... I think Chez called it.

As an A7RII user still, this is what I'd buy. I'll have to think long and hard about it VS a used RIV, though. Money matters... Hence I don't get the A1 comparisons. Oh to be rich and not care about $3k CDN...

I like the articulating screen but not sure I would go this route... I still use my trusty RII but do want to upgrade to the IIIA or IVA.... A1 is beyond my realm at this time.

Yes, there are some nice new features, especially in regards to AF tracking and IBIS. Finally focus bracketing!

Who is getting one? :-)

It’s kind of funny how they compare the camera to the previous R IV, showing that R IV produces blurry, OOF images in comparison scenes. Seems a bit strange strategy puttting previous model in such a position.

https://youtu.be/nR2W-Qni3sY

Not denying all the new improvements, but the such comparison just seems like a big marketing “joke” trying to say - hey, shell out a lot of $$$ for our new product.

Nice camera for sure.

But my Riii still does more than I need. It will be interesting to see how the image quality of the new camera compares.

Nope, not buying an A7RV. My A1 still ticks all the boxes for me as an all around camera. It seems in all but a couple of things this would be a downgrade for me.

From the responses so far, the new A7R V does not seem exciting enough to entice current Sony shooters to upgrade. Perhaps that will change?

Exactly. Nothing that makes me want one as even a backup to my A1. However the A7R5 does sound like an upgraded A7IV or A7RIV. I am not even sure I would upgrade from the RIV if I had one. Which I did before the A1.

What really strikes me about all of the successive A7 releases since the original is the increase in weight and size. Granted lots more tech crammed in, but the original A7 was about 250g lighter than this A7RV...something I really noticed when picking up my original A7 vs my (now gone) A7RIV.

I know the A7c exists but I can't live with that VF and flippy screen.

Part of me wishes for a simpler stills-focused Sony FF camera with a contemporaneous sensor a simple tilt screen and a nice big VF, at around that 450g point (IBIS and video free)

Quite interested to see how the new pixel shift software will do with small camera movement between frames (despite being on a tripod) and subject movement. Galer showed a short example with weird stuff in moving clouds and the need to mask in PS (yourself) to resolve.

Seems likely that a 19000 pixel wide image is just going to show up "poor" glass and technique ...

Because A1 still didn't get animal eyeAF in video from A7IV (or other features for that matter)...
(Sorry, by now I'm a realist when it comes to current approach to updates shown by Sony)

Regarding RV, that lcd screen and IBIS look nice . I wonder what's the actual impact of the new (AI) AF in real use...

Right, evidence seems to point that Sony is all about providing updates via new bodies only, which is a shame. That said, I still am holding out hope that the A1 will get a significant firmware update before the A1 mkii is announced. However, I don't truly believe that having these new AF features would actually have a substantive impact to getting the shot, but rather, make it a better shooting experience.

The A7R5 isn't enticing to me because of the limited 10 FPS. Seems pointless to have all these AF features without being able to get more FPS.

With all the a1 shooters here, I’m not sure if this camera is intended as an “upgrade” path.

I just picked up a A7 IV and I'm very impressed with AF tracking. My only disappointment is sensor read-out but I don't think it will be any better with the new A7R V.

I wish they could fast forward to an A1 Mk II with the new monitor, AF system, etc. Or a faster sensor read-out speeds on the A7R5.

But I'm getting one.

As an RIV user, Sony has solved all the quality of life complaints I had about the RIV.

Ultra-sonic dust busting
Tilt and flip screen
Better/faster menu
RAW sizes and lossless compressed

But I was hoping that Sony would do some real changes around computational photography. Yeah, we get focus bracketing (finally), but no in-camera stack, nor did we get that from multi-shot either. If their answer is Imaging Edge, it’s a lousy answer.

The short answer is the RV looks like a nice upgrade, but the cost differential is just too steep for what I’m getting as a landscape shooter for me to actually upgrade.

The one thing that keeps me drooling over the OM-1 remains the computational features, especially LiveND. They just solve issues I have working light and in the field.

It's really a tough call even if you have no camera at all for maybe 1700 more you can get the A1 which kinds makes more sense in some ways.

As a fellow a7r2 user, this has my vote as well. I actually want this, gorgeous EVF, potentially great AF, will wait for the reviews on how the AI stuff pans out.
I'm very interested in the improved connectivity options as imaging edge and a7r2 really suck.
Best of all, by the time I have saved for this, I expect the A7cii and a7V to also be options and possibly a 2nd hand A1, life is looking up!

This will work out nicely for me I hope, as I am hoping the price on the A7r4A will drop a little Need to pick up one within the next 2 weeks for a last second trip

The A7r V is geared more towards landscape and studio photographers (duh). The A1 is still the current reigning top dog as the do-all or universal camera. I am staying put until the A1 II is introduced.
