I modded some of the a7R V RAWs from DPReview and ran them through DxO PureRAW, which I also do for the a7R III. I don't see anything that scares me away. Each person probably has to make a decision based on how they shoot and what post processing tools they use, as to whether this is an issue for them.

For myself I rarely ever get past ISO 1600 so typically noise is never a factor with the A1 and from memory the A7RIV. Besides that most of the software alone with like C1 its never been an issue and totally adjustable as well. Im very impressed by the AF more than anything and something I could use as the A1 does miss sometimes on runway type shots with more than one model walking at me at the same time. It tends to bounce between them. The bigger issue here I think between these two bodies the A1 and A7R5 outside the normal stuff is the electronic shutter and sensor readout and for some of us we may have to rely more on going back to mechanical shutter. My other big issue is I leave for LA 12/26 and I need this camera in hand. Can I get one on first release is a big question mark as I can't wait if I sold the A1. Hate these decisions. I actually pre-ordered it through Amazon as I can just use my account but can also cancel as well. This is a tough decision as im sitting on the A1 so I am going backwards it feels like.

It's default, unedited RAW (left) in ARC viewer so no PP is involved. Plus, any edits would affect lighter and darker areas of the building. I asked few photo friends to send me their A7R4 RAW files at 100 ISO and I noticed similar noise. Again, the noise is usually visible in darker areas; shooting stills in bright light doesn't show it.

I was just wondering if you were using Adobe default sharpening and creating artifacts that looked like, or something along those lines. If you've spent any time on these forums, you would know I'm usually the first person to complain about noisy sensors, and while I wish ISO 6400 was a bit cleaner on the A7R IV, I don't see anything affecting my images at base ISO.

BTW, it's getting late and I have no time to waste, but I checked your last pages of posts and flickr account and see zero posts with Sony A7R* to make any challenging point.

The EXIF data calls these camera models "ILCE-7R4M" and "ILCE-7R4MA", so perhaps that's why you didn't see them.

Hi Guy.

I think you're letting your new gear GAS get the better of you. Wouldn't the slow sensor and having to use the mechanical shutter on the R5 kill your camera after one show? The slow sensor readout on the A7R5 is a real limitation for me because I want to use silent shutter for more relaxed candids.

Yea I could be shooting myself in the foot. That’s what’s holding me back and part of it is just Gas as I’m still trying to figure out if I’m retired or not. This specific gig is always for me to do. My wife runs this show as well as me as I do all the production on it. Lol
I can’t be fired.

But as you called it , this may not work as well too

It isn’t exactly the same sensor is it? There is a different number of PDAF focus points compared to the a7R IV. So it has at least that difference. Could be others as well.

That’s very interesting!! I think when they call it the same sensor they are referring to the individual pixel structure on the chip. These pixels have been used in other sensors like the 100 MP MF sensor. So the performance of the pixel is well known, but they could make other tweaks to the chip. I read something about copper traces for faster readout, don’t know if that is new. The readout speed might be a bit better than the r4, but it still won’t perform like a stacked sensor.

At least be honest with yourself…it’s all G.A.S., you have one of the most capable cameras on the planet already.

I believe the copper traces are a feature of Sony's BSI architecture, so probably not new.

Yes it is in a way it’s the AF tracking that’s got me going plus the tilt screen I’m on a monopod with the 70-200 in crop mode and 20k in shots is no picnic with EVF it gets old fast so we use the rear LCD and that new tilt would be a blessing as well. It’s some of these features that get me. And yes even the thought of selling the A1 scares the crap out of me giving that up. Still have time. I may rent one and see if it works or call Pro service in LA and try and get one for a few days , I’ll be there shooting. Certainly like to try it.

Btw I’m the most honest about this. 46 years and what drives it is the GAS.

Has to be some fun in this somewhere

I meant tweaks might have been made, I understand that it's not a stacked sensor and no one should expect miracles on readout speed. But I'm not sure Sony has said it's the "same sensor". I'm sure it's a different part number, because we know there is at least one published difference.

In any case, maybe the only difference is the number of PDAF sites, but maybe not......

The A7R5’s best feature is the glimpse at what the A1ii will be. The fatal flaw is the A1 today is the terrible rear LCD. Imagine the already amazing A1 AF with a dedicated AI chip added in. Will truly become the ultimate single do it all body and will benefit greatly from the enhanced rear LCD.

I would not argue this at all. Those couple of better feature sets the A7R5 has would be very welcome on the A1 no question

It's a good point. Lots of articles mention the same sensor but I haven't been able to find this information in the official press release or Specs from Sony.
"same' might just mean the same number of pixels and overall technology.
Can't wait for a review with some RAW file comparisons (vs A7RIV), readout measurements, etc.

Maybe reviewers are waiting for the official RAW support in LR, C1, DxO, etc. The camera is shipping in EU but there is no way to process the RAW files yet ?
