It isn’t exactly the same sensor is it? There is a different number of PDAF focus points compared to the a7R IV. So it has at least that difference. Could be others as well.

I think even though it is the same sensor some changes have been made. Sony's language claims that it's a "redeveloped" sensor so not exactly the same.

Finally found the answer I was looking for. This should have been in every review and as usual these guys suck at it. .From Imaging Resource and be blunt it makes the A9II and A1 stand out from the pack and now the A7RV

For sports shooters, while the A7R V might not be the optimal choice, it still packs impressive features like anti-flicker shooting and high-frequency flicker-free shooting with a variable shutter. This is important when photographing subjects in front of LED signage, like at a sports venue.

Now me. If you shoot any stage lighting the world has changed most lighting today is now done with LED. For me I shoot almost 40k under LED lighting its why I bought the damn A1

Now the only REAl feature the A1 has for commercial shooters , wedding shooters and such is the 1/400 Sync speed over 1/250. These are not typically hobbyist feature sets but for working Pros this stuff is essential to a lot of work we run into. Now im thinking again of the A7RV but I also don't need that 30 fps speed and such.

My biggest setback here is electronic shooting and blackout. I don't know how the A7RV actually looks like in electronic shutter mode. I don't mind a quick blink and don't have to be black out free but close is what I would like

But regardless this is a big plus here

I got my A7RV. Replaced my A7RIII with it.

Most things seem like a clear upgrade (LCD, EVF, ergonomics, functions, AF,...) but I can tell right away that I still way prefer the 42MP sensor over this one.
I didn't love it in the A7RIV and I still don't love it in the RV. It just feels so noisy compared to the one I was used to in the A7RIII.
I still have to test the new IBIS.

Curious at what ISOs you're noticing the difference? In a similar boat considering an upgrade from the A7RIII. Is the difference only noticeable past 3200, or well below that? I've heard conflicting reports about the noise difference between the A7RIV and A7RIII sensor for years, but I've only seen side-by-side comparisons at extreme ISOs. Curious what the actual difference is at more moderate ISOs (say 100 to 3200).

Thanks,

Mark

Not sure how helpful this is, because I don't know if the blackout changes from mechanical to electronic shutter. But you can see what the blackout is like for mechanical in this wacky video at 3 minute in:

Looks like typical mech shutter blackout at 8fps.

i personally don't need the ibis but i'm just very curious how it compares to nikon and canon and if the mount diameter is actually a factor or not. the improvement seems impressive

Although I don't have A7R3, but A7R2 has the same sensor as R3 and comparing it to A7R4A the output from 42mp is super clean. Unfortunately 61mp sensor of A7R4A shows noise even at the base ISO, specially in darker areas.
In example below you can notice way more noise in shaded areas of the building, but likely it can be cleaned with noise reduction (automated via camera profile in Adobe RAW)
Hope this helps.

I've never seen this in my images. Maybe it's your post-processing?

It's default, unedited RAW (left) in ARC viewer so no PP is involved. Plus, any edits would affect lighter and darker areas of the building. I asked few photo friends to send me their A7R4 RAW files at 100 ISO and I noticed similar noise. Again, the noise is usually visible in darker areas; shooting stills in bright light doesn't show it.

By all accounts it's the first Sony body that has truly competitive IBIS.

Based on my experience shooting an A7riv and a7riii, if you reduce the file size of the A7riv to match the a7r2/3 the noise will be about the same and won’t appear worse in prints of similar size.

If you have to enlarge the image by 300% to see it, it's probably just interpolation artifacts you're looking at.

k, I am sharing what I see hoping it may help others. I do not have to enlarge to 300% to see odd artifacts that I didn't see with other sensors. Based on other samples from A7R4 and tons of posts related to noise visible in Sony 61mp sensor I don't have to pull Lloyd Chambers here, nor prove more that I can see.
If everyone else out there is happy with quality of A7R4 and be 5, it all matters.
It's a photography forum and I shared my opinion based on examples.

BTW, how can you explain noise in darker areas, but not in brighter spots? Just because you don't see it in your images, it doesn't mean it doesn't exists. I posted valid a sample; it does exist.
Your call, Molson

BTW, it's getting late and I have no time to waste, but I checked your last pages of posts and flickr account and see zero posts with Sony A7R* to make any challenging point. I am maybe wrong considering time time of the week, but I am looking for your response supported by YOUR examples.

I have had basically every Sony mirrorless body. I do agree the A7riv 61mp gets noisier faster than the older 42MP sensor. Kinda common sense. I always have thought that 42mp sensor was the sweet spot. That said, I can clean up things that get a little noisy and still benefit from having the 61 mp. These programs have become so good it's a none issue in my opinion.

I notice it at every ISO really, so also the lower ones.
The very fine noise creeps in so quickly.
In the end it's not really a big deal, but I do still clearly prefer the A7RIII files.
