The main thing I find awkward about the 200-500 is the balance when handholding. The new 100-400 is just superb in that department, feels lighter than it is. I hope Nikon can pull off excellent balance on the 200-600.

Yeah that's a fair point - you can really feel the weight shift when you zoom the 200-500 out to 500mm. Not a big deal for short periods but it's not ideal if you're going to be handholding for long periods of time. All the Z lenses seem to be incredibly well balanced and with the Z200-600 being an internal zoom design, they should be able to do the same there too.

I've been keeping my eyes open for any info on the upcoming Z200-600.

Would you be kind enough to point me to a reference that says this lens will have an internal zoom design?

That would be exciting. Thank you.

If you look at the Z roadmap photos, the silhouette of the 200-600 is not much shorter than the 800 PF and 400/2.8. Also, just looking at the lens barrel silhouette, it doesn't look like it's a telescoping design, but that is just my opinion.

We know the 400/2.8 is 15" long and the 800PF is 15.2" long, and we know the existing 200-500 is 10.5" collapsed and 13.5" extended.

So, looking at the roadmap, if the 200-600 is roughly 2" shorter than the 400/2.8 (estimating based on the graphic), that puts it much closer to the 200-500 size at 500mm than at 200mm. Also, the direct competition from Sony's 200-600 is also a internal zoom design, and Nikon is likely to follow suit. Sony's 200-600 is 12.5" long, almost exactly 2" shorter than the 400/2.8 and 800PF, and within an inch of the 200-500 @500. If a 200-600 the size of the one in the roadmap graphic extends when zooming, it will really be enormous and I will be quite surprised if that turns out to be the case.

Lastly, Nikon seems to really be focusing on balance with their Z lenses, and that's easier to do with an internal zoom design on a large lens. I'm very excited for the 200-600 provided they don't cripple the AF speed too much compared to the "S" lenses. Optically it will almost surely be even better than the 200-500 which already performs way better than it's price would suggest (Every "Z" update so far has been noticeably better than the F mount equivalent).

For favoring an internal zoom design, you've made some good points, and quick ones. Thanks.

I have been believing the same reasoning for months. So, I also believe it will be an internally zooming lens.

I am certain it will be very sharp, regardless of it not being an "S" lens.

I'm a real fan of Sony's 200-600 so I'm really looking forward to Nikon's version and am fully expecting it to complete very well (though no doubt pricier). In fact I'm probably going to postpone my 800PF purchase until after the Z200-600 is available to confirm I actually need the prime.

This is exactly what I am doing. Ideally I will rent the 800PF but I doubt a rental model will be available for a while in my area.

I have the 100-400 on order and I will order the 200-600 on launch day. Along with the 1.4TC I suspect I will be happier with the flexibility of 100-840mm between those two lenses. The other thing that concerned me slightly for my personal usage on the 800PF is the relatively long MFD (5m/16.4ft), which could mean I don't actually need 800mm most of the time (that is very possible).

I bet it will be priced very similar to Sony's. It's not a complicated lens to make and Nikon/s 200-500/5.6 is $1,396 and it's even 1/3 stop faster (though 100mm shorter). An extra 100mm and dropping to variable aperture F6.3 shouldn't change cost a whole lot, even with an internal zoom design. The Sigma 150-600 Sport is quite a premium lens and it also sits at $1999. So far Nikon has been pretty aggressive with Z pricing overall, especially with the Z9 and 800PF. I would guess $1799, $1899, $1999 - somewhere in there. I will be very surprised if it's much over $2K. All speculation though haha.

I took my Z9 + 400 f2.8E FL VR out today as I haven't used the 400 much lately. Man, I am so glad I did, the IQ from that lens is simply gorgeous.

White-faced Heron.

Z9 + 400 f2.8, 1/1250s f/3.2 at 400.0mm iso64

Osprey with fish. I got a whole series of 45 photos of it flying across the water and the Z9 stayed on the bird like glue and every one of them tack sharp. The Osprey had caught the fish further out but it was so big it couldn't fly out of the water and had to swim to a rock in order to get out of the water!

A few favorites from this past week. The Z9 continues to get me images that would have been difficult to get with my DSLR's. Still very pleased with how well the the 1.7 TC works with my 600 E.....the 1.7 stays on my 600 unless the light is low. However the Cormorant image has me wondering if at times it may be better just to use the 1.4 and crop heavier. It's just that in my area the birds are so skittish that 840 mm is just not enough most of the time. Looking forward to longer Z glass in the future to see if there is IQ and AF improvements over the already very good performance of adapted glass on the Z9.

Hope you enjoy these images as much as I did capturing them.

Wow. Each shot is impressive. That first woody is awesome. And that may be the best cormorant BIF I've ever seen. The dark BG really works to help make the feather detail pop. Really well done.

Thank you NissanPatrol. One reason I believe you dont see many using the 1.7 is because of its history on DSLR's. I only used the 1.7 and 2.0 on my 200 F2 when I was shooting DSLR's. The Z9 has made the 1.7 a viable option now and even the 2.0 TC performs well on the 400 2.8.

Thank you DivineFocus for your comment. Much appreciated!

I wish I had been a little tighter for the Woody shots. They were pretty heavy crops.

The Cormorant shot is one of my best images of that species. I love the males in breeding plummage. It seems that many times the eye will be just a tad soft even at higher shutter speeds. Not sure if that is a TC issue or not but I have always had to use TC's even when I shot the D500 crop body. I had the 1.4 on the 600 for this shot which forced me to crop more than I would have with the 1.7 therefore has me thinking I may should stick with the 1.4 and crop deeper. I am hoping to have an opportunity where I can make a better comparison between the 1.4 and 1.7 with willing subjects.

Some more baseball photos from this past weekend’s travel ball tournament. They took 3rd. Still the number 1 8u machine pitch team in the state and nation though. Shot with a Z9 and 70-200z lens. All shot through the fence. I tried to narrow it down to a few but couldn’t so I just posted them all. Lol. CC welcomed and appreciated. Thanks for the look.
