I was looking for it.

I thought I ridden a time machine to the time prior to the Z9 release

I hope it did/does. There is some good info and fantastic images in this thread. Even as a Canon user I would look at this thread. I have since bought a Z8 and looking for tips from here as well.

(It was an older 5D)

Here is a Matt Irwin "strite away" (just playing Matt). with a video...... on heating in the Z8.

Thanks to those who found the old Z9 images and discussion thread

This post will pull it to the top temporarily. But again, let's combine the two of them in images and discussions on the differences.

Robert

Truth be told: I absolutely *love* the Australian accent. And it works both ways. I may go over there one day, visit LanceB and watch the Aussie's react to my Maine accent.

In just the 1st test he did......

Running N-Raw, at 22:14 in the above video Matt finally announces that he got a *hot card warning*

That was after *45 minutes of non-stop video recording* while on the Z8's *internal power*.

And he kept going to 90 minutes, though the hot card light was on.

AND THE CAMERA DID NOT EVEN GET HOT

Jan says you will not be able to finish a 2 hour shooting session with just one battery. He says if you shoot the entire day, you will need 4 to 6 batteries.

>. "What stands out for me is the Ibis that works incredibly well with the VR in the Zed-mount lenses"

>. "You can easily do handheld video even at 840mm for extended periods of time, with no shake at all. So this is amazing to do in the field, and has allowed me to capture a lot more videos than I can do with any other system."

I got tired and have not finished the video yet.

Hi Ganesh - it would be very helpful for me at least if you would post the EXIF data for these images on Flickr and on FM forum.

For example, in your image of the Tiger pursuing the deer -- what shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings were you using AND are you able to provide an approximate distance to the subject; finally was your final image uncropped, slightly cropped, or heavily cropped.

This way folk can learn how to take such a great shot.

Dang Kasper. The sharpness on that image makes me appreciate my 20/15 vision. Can't wait till my Z8 gets here.

Am sorry about that..This was shot in tricky lighting situation and the light was a bit harsh so when I posted the processed image from my IPAD I had to make some minor contrast adjustments using Flickr's edit option and this seems to have ripped off the EXIF data!

Here are the settings - Shot this with Z9 + 500mm F4E FL lens, F4, ISO 640, Shutter speed of 1/4000.

I cropped the image for social media consumption - about 50% crop. Subject was easily about 100 meters.

Ryker Test One by Jesse Evans, on Flickr

Ryker Test Two by Jesse Evans, on Flickr

My first photos that I took with the camera (Z8) that I can post. These two are from a 20fps sequence of Ryker, my Australian Shepherd, running at full speed directly to me. I love these types of photos of my dogs, and so I tend to test most new cameras with this approach. No significant findings yet, but I will note that I am surprised how quiet the autofocus is on the 24-120 f/4 S.

I thought I would post this here as well.

Nikon Z8 and Z9 both throttle back FPS from 20 fps to 15 fps at shutter speeds of 1/200th and slower.

In"discovered" this while operationally testing 4 bodies (2 Z9 and 2 Z8) after obtaining unusually long bursts in buffer tests across a range of my fastest cards. I looked in detail at the images -- which included shots of a stopwatch running with 1/100th second intervals to discover that when the shutter speed is lowered from 1/250th to 1/200th 20 fps becomes 15.

And so now 1 day later and having reset all my settings on 4 bodies and reloaded them all to discover something basic -- Thom Hogan included a note on this in his book -- nothing I could remember seeing in any other reference. But then there is was on page 134 of the Reference Guide - but not in language that responded to my search. AND what does "at slow shutter speeds" mean -- well now I know -- if you drop shutter speed to 1/200th the FPS drops to 15 fps.
Now I almost never shoot with such low shutter speeds in the field - well not shooting lion, leopard of other cat action that is - I was just being forgetful in my studio while I ran over 50 tests bursts with a host of cards and 4 cameras -- to discover I have a great baseline for 15 fps - but not so good for 20 fps.

4 tests - VR off. SD off

You think everything is set up to be

Many cards and many tests later to discover they were all at 15fps - the lighting in my studio was too low so I reduced the shutter speed without understanding the effect.

Put the Z8 through some usual paces over the last week - surprise: it behaves exactly the same as the Z9 in the performance department.

- balance with 400 4.5 (and smaller lenses like the trinity) is great
- balance with 800 6.3 is mostly ok but I think Z9 is a tad more comfortable (not a deal breaker). I don't think I'd want to shoot something like 600 F4 (that's 2 pounds more) with an ungripped body.

No issues with overheating or battery life so far (I didn't need to swap batteries during my outings). Overall - a great addition to Nikon's line up.

Samples (some xposted from 800PF thread):

Bald Eagle

Willow Flycatcher

Spotted Towhee

Common Merganser

Brown Creeper

Rufous Hummingbird

Swainson's Thrush

It’s pretty exhaustively detailed in the manual.

It does indeed mention the shutter speed of 1/250 but I find it interesting it fails to explain why at under that speed it will limit. At a shutter speed of 1/250 (4ms), you should be able to fit more than 15 frames per second, no? 1 second (1,000 ms) at 20 fps would be at a theoretical 50ms per capture or a shutter speed around 1/20? Maybe the time required to process & buffer pushes it all the way up to 1/250?

Also entirely possible I'm thinking about this wrong and/or doing the math wrong

I don’t think you’re necessarily thinking about it wrong, but there are other factors to consider when thinking about the fps available. First, I should note this type of limitation on minimum shutter speed exists for most cameras offering such high frame rates.

Most significantly, autofocus and EVF/LCD previews need to be scanned many times in between each frame which necessarily cannot happen during the process of capturing a frame. So you need to clear / reset the sensor and scan it for EVF preview and autofocus calculations + clear / reset it again to capture the frame, then you need to actually capture the frame.

With a 120hz preview and 60hz af calculations you have to give up sensor time for, and the resets required between shots, there is unlikely to be more than 1/250 to capture an actual photo 20 times per second. Since we don’t know every number about the sensor it’s hard to know how much budget the EVF and af calculations actually consume. But, we can infer from the flash sync speed of 1/200 that it is likely that the reset wave of the sensor is roughly the same as its 1/270 scan speed. So we can assume that the sensor can be reset at most 270 times per second. If you reset the sensor 120 times for the EVF, that will consume 120/270 or 444ms out of 1000ms, so you’re spending nearly half of the second just resetting the sensor. You also have to add to this number the amount of time required for each EVF scan of the sensor. And, potentially, you might also need separate scans for the phase detect pixels.

A little help please with lens focus distance set and recall for the Z8. On the 100-400 I set LN to set and LN2 to recall. I did a test to see if it works. However I no longer can get minimum focus distance with the lens. The manual says to detach the lens to reset it. I have three times and even put on a different lens. The 100-400 minimum distance now is set to the distance I set to test it which was about 15 feet. What am I missing? Thanks.
