Here's a little demonstration of the Z9 subject recognition in action. This bird flew behind some branches and the subject recognition retained lock on the bird and ignored the branches. The photos are culls but demonstrate how well the AF works. When it works...

Nice
Same as this (The focus is on the eye)
The tree trunk is large compared to the bird and closer to the camera than the bird

Some baby burrowing owls and a banded adult. This is the first time I have seen a banded burrowing owl. Pretty neat. Next time I’m in the area I’m going to try and get some better pictures of the band and see if I can get the information off of it and send it in. All taken with a Nikon Z9 and 500 mm PF lens. CC welcomed and appreciated

It is actually 560mm f/4, but yes, the blurring and subject isolation at f/4 is noticeably better than f/5.6. One reason for the price difference with 500/4 😉

Wow
will the 560mm f/2.8 blur the back ground this much?
my 500mm pf/ f/5.6 does not come close in blurring the back ground

Went to a park in Sydney called Centennial Park yesterday to shoot some of the local birds. This park has a number of large lakes for water birds, but also attracts a number of other birds like Black Cockatoos, Corellas and Lorikeets etc. A beautiful day and the birds for the whole cooperated and had great fun shooting BIF etc, as much fun as I've had with my pants on.
14) Nankeen Kestrel. This guy wouldn't let me get any closer and when flying kept his distance. Got a whole sequence of shots all in focus. This is a 100% crop.

Lance
you keep amazing me by how sharp your photos
What is your secret?
do you calibrate the lens, camera pair?
Thank you very much, Philip!
As for sharpening, this is the Nikon 400 f2.8E FL VR, one of Nikon's finest and sharpest! I apply very little sharpening. A very small amount at RAW conversion and then sometimes a very, very tiny amount when saving to jpeg.
There is no need to calibrate the lens as it is mirrorless.
