I do. That is IBIS parking. If you turn VR off, it does not make that sound when you push menu or play. So Nikon did not add any sound.
So if Nikon can stop it parking in Silent mode then I wish there would be a way to have it not park but still give me fake shutter. That is my request.
If that is IBIS, then why is it so loud? No other IBIS camera I have is loud like that when it parks.
Is there a way to have VR on the lens but IBIS off in camera? I'd rather have IBIS off all the time if I could. On other systems there isn't a way to decouple them.

In the full sun I was shooting in it was doing fine for these perched birds. However the other day I tried the 1.7x (didn't try the 2x that day) in cloudy/shady backyard conditions and the focus was terrible. I went and grabbed my A1/200-600/1.4TC to see how it compared. Nikon at 850 f/9.5, Sony at 840 f/9. The Sony was much better and stable once tracking. The Nikon sometimes would get focus but then lose it....green square back to red square....hunt, hunt....I'm sure the 2x would be even worse.
Despite these cherry picked shots I posted, I don't think I would bother shooting the 1.7 or 2x on the 500PF. There was a lot of inconsistency in the results even with just perched birds. I think I'd stick with the 1.4 and crop more....Show more →
Yep, the Z Nikon TC are so much better on the Z cameras. That plus adapted versus native glass, I am not surprised.

That is the realization I'm starting to come around to. I think the long term dream of using all the great F glass has to be put in context of the limitations it will bring for challenging AF situations compared to native Z glass and Z TCs.
I think the Z9 will really shine with the 400S and TCs.

I didn’t build it, I am just telling you what it is. Just shoot silent mode. That is why there is a silent mode. I don’t think Nikon is taking requests here.

And I think F glass will be fine in 95% of use cases. The other 5% no.
This is exciting! It opens up a whole new medium for me.... for wildlife photographers, for us.
One must keep that bird steady and as close to the same spot in the frame as possible. Poor Matt Granger found that out. You did a pretty good job of keeping them there. It is *not* easy, but better if they are flying across the frame.
Questions:
Was this done handheld, or with gimbal or fluid head?
If this is handheld, you did *not* get the extra VR stops with the 500PF did you?
Is the Z9's video AF, the same as its still AF?
Does the new 400 2.8 S have the extra VR that is combined with the Z9's (is it called IBIS or IRIS?)
I wonder if you can get one of those ducks in that lagoon flying straight at you...... and in focus! That's probably too much for the system, but thought I would ask.

It's IBIS and only stops that sound when you shut VR off. Don't think it shuts off in silent mode either! That's using 500pf still have to try it with 100-400 but my lens at at LensCoat, sent it to my friend Scott who owns it to make a template for covers.

The good news is that 500PF with TCx2 would not AF at all with D850 (and I assume D6 but never tried this combination) but it still work with Z9 for certain scenario
and overall I think I still get better keeper rate with 500PF with Z9 than D6. But the bad news is that Z mount native lens do work even better. 100-400+ TCx2 at F11 can track at least bigger slower bird in flight such as egrets perfectly fine. I have not try anything faster though. I definitely am looking forward to what the 400/2.8s could do.

It does not park IBIS in silent mode when you press view or menu buttons (or it does but somehow does it silently, which I doubt). This does not depend on lens as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the clarifications around the IBIS. That steered me in the right direction so I know now that if I keep VR off then I can eliminate the sound but keep the fake shutter sound on.
I realize Nikon isn't taking requests from me....I do hope they will listen a little better to their users though as some things would be rather simple to implement and create an even better user experience.

This is all handheld...the 500PF never sees a tripod unless I'm doing controlled IQ tests in the backyard
I don't think VR would even have been on for these sequences but if it was it would not be getting any special combined stops that the Z lenses may get. I typically switch off VR once at 1/2000 or faster. Sometimes I don't bother to but yesterday I did shut it off for some of the time.
I haven't tried video AF yet. I may experiment with it a little bit shortly.
The new 400/2.8 has 5.5 stops of basic VR. It says it has Synchro VR with the Z9. According to the Z9 brochure, Synchro VR allows a total of 6 stops. But that brochure was written before the 400 so not sure if the 400 bumps that past 6 stops or not??
I got sequences of things flying straight at me. The system has a bit of a tendency to back focus on the ducks but there are still correctly focused shots in each burst.

Very interesting. Handheld standing or handheld sitting?
My 500PF never sees the tripod either. I have a few short clips done with the D850 with the 200-500 clamped to the gunwale of the canoe. That worked ok but they are done with Focus Peaking in manual.
I don't believe I could stand and string together a 120 fps handheld burst that looks as smooth as those two you posted. I thought you were probably sitting, with the camera down and your arms braced on your legs. I think that would be much more stable and smoother.
That 400S looks very exciting for sure. The technology is working toward being able to stand and handhold a smooth panned video. Just gotta keep the subject close to the same spot in the frame as possible. Slow motion helps too.

A few from a gray dismal day in S FL. Taken with a 500mmpf. I can’t wait to get out and shoot with the z9 in better light. CC welcomed and appreciated. Thanks

I'm usually just squatting when I shoot at this location. Sometimes standing once my legs start to cramp up from the squat. . Those two sequences would have been squatting I think.

I asked a friend of mine whose works included translating all Nikon manual to Thai and was a beta tester for Z9. He is not sure but he knows about the noise. However, parking IBIS is probably not it as he said that when you go into menu mode, IBIS is parked as well but there is no noise then. I asked him to look into this but it will take sometimes as he played a lot with pre production units but production units have different firmware and menus are a bit different. If I find out anything, I will let you know.
