I asked a friend of mine whose works included translating all Nikon manual to Thai and was a beta tester for Z9. He is not sure but he knows about the noise. However, parking IBIS is probably not it as he said that when you go into menu mode, IBIS is parked as well but there is no noise then. I asked him to look into this but it will take sometimes as he played a lot with pre production units but production units have different firmware and menus are a bit different. If I find out anything, I will let you know.

You are right. I never noticed the noise when I go into menu mode before. Just got home from work and tried it, oppps. Hmmm.. I guess, there is probably no way to make this noise goes away easily then except as you said, turn off VR or silent mode.

Spent Lunch with an Eagle yesterday. Even though the temp was 20F, he preferred the balcony. The Z9 is fantastic grabbing the eye even through branches like in this photo. This was with 3D tracking and animal detect.

I find this to be true also. I rarely use VR and was unaware of the sound until arbitrage mentioned it.

Took the Z9 and 800mm out for round a few days ago. My traditional hotspot for critters was notably slow and it took hours to find some subject matter to point the rig towards. I'm still working to dial in the camera to my tastes and still haven't had a good chance to try some high ISO shooting which is sort of an important part of what I tend to shoot. My lack of subject matter left me shooting the moon just for a "how sharp is this lens on this camera shot".
I'll add that I haven't quite figured out the noise profile of this camera either. With the D5/D6 I knew exactly what to expect so this one is still not quite dialed in.
