that is pretty much what it is. and as said above it can be turned off. after that the occasional mechanical sound of the ibis going in and out of sleep mode.
with everything up and running and sound off firing with a flash all you hear is the flash tube popping when fired.

What I did find out today in relation to the 1-5 setting is that if you use Wide-Area (S or L) and it finds a subject/head/eye it will track it over the entire frame until the sensitivity "timer" runs out and then it tries to refocus within the initial Wide Area. However if the bird was large in the frame and I aimed the Wide-Area at the head, it finds the eye, I recompose so that the Wide-Area is now over the body of the bird then the system continues to track the eye indefinitely. I guess because the Wide-Area is still over the "subject".
Scott had asked me about this earlier and I gave him incorrect information. I thought the eye/head tracking would only track a small ways outside the Wide-Area borders but at a setting of 5 it can track it over the frame for an entire short BIF sequence so you don't have to hit an alternative button for Auto or 3D.

You might be hearing IBIS parking an/or sensor cleaning. The only fake noise is the shutter which can be turned off.
I don't think it would be sensor cleaning going into and out of playback but that may be it on power off.
If it is IBIS parking then why does silent mode get rid of it? Does it just not park in silent mode?

Not sure if I am doing something wrong and have wrong setting on the camera but it seems that when I am in the menu, camera often exited the menu by itself and went back to live view. I made sure I am not touching any button in the camera beside the directional pad to navigate around the menu. This is very strange. I never had this problem with D2x, D7100, D810, D850, D500, D6, Z7, Z7 ii and a few other Nikon bodies
I had the same issue. Thought my camera had a glitch...but no, it was me. I was indecently touching the grip shutter button with the palm of my hand when holding the camera and using the menus. Took me a awhile to figure it out but you need to lock the shutter using the switch on the grip. After I did that. no problems with the menus! Doh...

Interesting. Thanks for the clarification.

Not sure, but with the shutter turned way down, the camera is really darn quite.

A few mundane shots from my dreary day. Nice to finally have a Nikon with decent AF via the tilt screen for my ground level shooting!!
I just got my Z9 also and have tried my hand at some wildlife...mainly to test and learn the autofocus modes. I primarily shoot in the studio and landscapes. But, I think I'm starting to get hooked on this wildlife shooting. I found a rare duck (Northern Shoveler) and went on a hike to find a Snowy Owl (which I got some great shots). Even printed one and hung on the wall. What I liked about your photos was the ground level perspective you got. I'm going to try that as soon as the wind chill temp rises above negative numbers around here in Massachusetts.

You are brave. My Z9 has been sitting in my bag for almost a week now.
Waiting for the 50s and 60s degrees to come out of hibernation.

It was very cold today so I made some images indoors to test the focus shift shooting and made this water drop macro image using the 105 S macro lens. Worked great.

I am also quite pleased with the new HE* RAW compression format. The quality of the files is astounding particularly with the smaller file sizes. Here a few landscape images I made this past week.

The camera is rated for quite a bit more than that. Don’t worry about it—just go shoot!
I was out this morning at -3F and the Z9 handled it with no difficulties. I shot 2000 frames and still had 49% battery.

I also played a bit with 500PF.
I think once focus, both tracks just about as good as each other but when there are many birds,
500PF tend to lose track a bit faster. However, I would give an edge to 100-400 as far as acquiring focus in the first place. I shot mostly with wide area L and auto area with animal eye detection.

Thanks, yes, it is the vertical shutter button that gave me problem as well. Strange, I never had this problem with D6 before.

I found exactly the same thing. The 100-400 just seems a little quicker to acquire focus.

Any tracking difference between the 100-400 and the 500PF when shooting against busy backgrounds?
