I also played a bit with 500PF.
I think once focus, both tracks just about as good as each other but when there are many birds,
500PF tend to lose track a bit faster. However, I would give an edge to 100-400 as far as acquiring focus in the first place. I shot mostly with wide area L and auto area with animal eye detection.

Thanks, yes, it is the vertical shutter button that gave me problem as well. Strange, I never had this problem with D6 before.

I'm just glad it wasn't just me! I was getting ready to send it back to Nikon! I think it's that the camera is a bit smaller and, if you have big hands, you can inadvertently hit that shutter button with your palm.

Just got my Z9 Thursday night and worked all day Friday so Sat and Sun were first time out and first time with Mirrorless so it was an adjustment. The conditions were not good for BIF or seeing much wildlife in general as it was between 9F and 15F with 20+mph winds and gusts. It took a bit to get it to acquire and track BIF but I think I got it now. Will try it out on something faster soon.

Not sure, but with the shutter turned way down, the camera is really darn quite.

I tried silent a bit on Sunday and then went back to the Volume 1 setting. In some situations, like where there were 200+ ducks quaking around me, I couldn't even hear the shutter myself But I find 2 too loud so will keep on with 1 or maybe back to silent. I just find the taking a shot white border flashing indicator a little too hard to notice while shooting. Maybe I'll get used to it as I do prefer total silence with my other cameras. The R5 had a pretty bad indicator. The Sony cameras have options to change the color to blue and have it flash around the given AF Area instead of always on the perimeter of the frame. That makes it much easier to see when you are shooting.

Agree. I had a hard time trying silent. Not that I was firing off too many shots. I just need the shutter sound still. I think I will use Volume 1 and silent just when I have to have it.

Silent is to little, 2 is too much, 1 is just right. The Goldilocks of camera sounds.

We are so spoiled.

It's nice to have it on Z9, but it still lacks on other cameras.
Fuji always had this optional when ES is used, 3 level of sound with two different types of sound, or completely silent.
It was weird to me when I picked Z6 after release, I couldn't use some kind of sound.
That hasn't changed yet...

This are amazing shots, but I would really like to know what lens, and what basic EXIF parameters, please.
Thanks

What I know for sure is that the mirror slapping, mechanical shutter, of big DSLRs is way too much noise. After shooting mirrorless for a few years now I am shocked when I stand next to someone shooting one.

That bear is dead....

I put mine to level 1 sound. I find having a more obnoxious shutter release indicator defeats the purpose of the beautiful no black out EVF so I don't have have any indicator on mine. Just seamless shooting.

Any tracking difference between the 100-400 and the 500PF when shooting against busy backgrounds?

I have not really tried shots with busy background with both lenses side by side yet. Not many places that I can use 100-400 conveniently for birds yet but I think as a whole, I get better keeper rate with Z9 and 500PF or 600/4e FL than with D6 and 500PF or 600/4e FL so far.

Nothing overly special, just trying out various subjects to see how the AF works.

These two Silvereyes showed up just below the platform I was standing on to get the Pelican shots (later in the post). I was impressed with the AF as the Z9 picked then straight up, admittedly, their eyes are well defined!

Z9 + 500 f5.6 PF.

Pelicans. I was in a very elevated spot and these Pelicans were riding the updraughts and thought they made for a good shot.

Z9 + 500 f5.6 PF

A Peregrine Falcon came by but never really close.

Z9 + 500 f5.6 pF

The ubiquitous Gull shot.
