Chatted with B&H 1 final time and was told
"We don't have any shipments coming in this week or next week, I'm afraid. We don't have an estimate for when Nikon will be shipping more".
So I cancelled the order. Will probably regret it when I see awesome photos posted by some of you guys, but
for now, I am going to focus on 2 Sony lenses I've been holding off on buying, waiting for the z9.
Once the 800PF or 200-600 is out, I hope to re-board the Nikon train.
You guys are all awesome and if I rubbed any of you wrong in any way, I apologize. ...Show more →
Good move. I really think a person is much better off financially, and in terms of skill building, sticking to one system. And you already are shooting an a1. Go get those two lenses. They are a much better use of money than another body.

I agree. Trouble now is ... the 2 Sony lenses I am after are equally difficult to get.
Traded 1 trouble for 2 others.
Everything is hard to get nowadays. But I agree, there’s no reason to yearn for a Z9 when you already have the awesome A1.

So, just to follow up on my comment from a month or so ago... call down the Nikon Authorized List if looking for a camera. I called down the list today and found a smaller Nikon shop where I am now number 5 and 6 on their list for a Nikon Z9.
I called around when the D850 launched and was able to snag a camera with no wait. Just a PSA for all those sitting on B&H's wait list of 7,000 ( 🤣 ).

I too cancelled my order the other day. I simply had to think about the reasons for moving in that direction and indeed financially it made little sense. Since the 1.5 firmware update they did for my R5 I found it nailed focus so quickly and with stickiness I doubt would be outdone. I have NO doubt the Z9 will be a tremendous success. With over $15k invested in Canon RF glass it was hard to imagine shelling out another amount similar for no great reason. I guess the GAS got ahold of me for a bit. This gives me plenty of time to let the dust settle on people getting their Z9's and assessing their thoughts on it. By then the R1 will likely be announced and then I can make a more salient decision.

As a heads up a few non-NPS members who ordered directly from Nikon early on the 28th are reporting on DPR that their cards were charged and got emails telling them their pre-order is in stock and they should expect another email with shipping information soon.
So possible confirmation the NPS backlog is ending.

Nikon has sent not one but two emails out to NPS members ensuring their order would be fulfilled by mid January.
This should tell you something about supply. But no, a few people have to make a big fuss that they didn’t receive their Z9 on day 1 because they’ve put their name on the list.
To me, this is probably the most transparent(esp at the current situation) a company can be with a new hot product release.

In my 30 years as an NPS member, I have never seen them put out shipment notices like this. Logic would call it too risky...unless there is an absolute hurricane of Z9's inbound.
