p.28 #1 · Z9: Countdown to air shipment and release.......
The small/medium US dealer where I preordered on Oct. 28 as of a few days ago says he still has zero info from Nikon about when they will see their first units. Anyone else have a dealer who has no word yet on first delivery? Seems strange to me they would know nothing still at this point.

Picked up my Z9 today so a little Christmas present for myself. It was released yesterday but I was away until last night.
Here only the two main Nikon dealers in the whole country got Z9 during the first shipments, about 20 each.
Congrats! So excited for you. Looking forward to your pix!

Don't feel so bad. If the CS rep at B&H I spoke to this morning was accurate (as some have reported some rather absurd stuff some reps told them) they are now stuck without more product, and while they were previously supposed to see another trickle show up on the 30th, he pulled a report that stated they are now not expecting more product in till "maybe" mid to end of January due to ships not docking yet and the unloading and shipping to Nikon USA for distribution is all slowed down now ...
Well, I don't have any irons in the fire on the Z9 delivery issue since I did not order one. That said, the comment in your post about someone telling you that Nikon supply is stuck on container ships MIGHT not be correct info on the part of the rep who told you that. I was told in November by a knowledgeable sales rep at a major camera store in the Los Angeles area that sensitive electronics like cameras, etc. are shipped airfreight so as to avoid potential damage to the electronics from exposure to salt air moisture from long duration stays on container ships. Whether that turns out to be absolutely true I don't know. But makes sense to me. I hope that it is as I wait for my pre-ordered 100-400 S lens.

Thanks Thang, I am very excited about this camera. It has all the features that I want in a more familiar package and ergonomic that I prefer. However, I am sure there will be plenty of better images by other members here than I can achieve

I also heard from this end that Z9 are airfreight mostly. Interesting tidbits, Nikon factory was built many years ago here in a location where it does not need to pass heavy traffic to get to the old airport which now still serve as a major cargo center and quite far from any major seaport.
The much newer Sony facility is located further south much closer to the major seaport but with easy access to the new airport as well.

ABSOLUTELY right. And this tipped me off they were giving me a bunch of BS. I'm not trusting a word from them at this point.

Hmmm… as far as I know, Nikon factory over here is still operating full time and Nikon had hired more people ( many were laid off the past 2 years) so I am sure there will be more Z9 before next October.

Yodobashi camera does indeed have a banner saying this, Bic Camera also.
Mapcamera doesn't.

I saw the same thing on Yodabashi store, very strange.
I talked to someone over here and I was told that they still expect another shipment of Z9 mid January. However, after that, chip shortage may start to impact production. I did here that Nikon initially made a forecast for around 80,000 units and made plan accordingly months ago but the response took them by surprise. Anyhow, there would be no reason for Nikon to rehire many employees that they let go this past 2 years back if they could not increase production capacity nor think that they cannot procure enough parts for the long run, I think.

From what I see the smaller dealers seem to be getting a trickle and the likes of B&H are getting nearly none, or certainly not enough to make a dent in their backorders. No wonder the CS rep told me to forget about it till summer or 3rd quarter of this year.

My self-imposed z9 delivery deadline of Jan 15th is still 3 weeks away.
But seeing this rumor article made me wonder how any of the camera manufacturers can get things done in 2022.

The dealer where I preordered did not receive any units for the preorder list other than a few NPS, and he expects another shipment in January but does not know if it will again be NPS only. What’s interesting is that several other dealers have reported receiving a mix of NPS and non-UPS last week such as Mike’s Camera (five stores in California) who received 7 for the non-UPS preorders and 5 for NPS.

I think most US stores got 0 to 1 non-NPS cameras.
I have a feeling there will not be another US allocation till mid-January which will fulfill the rest of the NPS orders plus hopefully some non-NPS orders.
After mid January I would hope there are at least bi-weekly allocations of a handful of cameras to each store.
And, this slower than hoped for distribution is not a Nikon issue. It is certainly a chip shortage issue. Sony, Canon…are in the same boat so we have to be patient. Most of us suck at that, but hopefully this experience (not just waiting for cameras but all of the changes COVID has required of us) makes us more resilient.
