Is it possible Nikon USA is prioritizing the B&H allotment for the initial availability?
Guess what. I'm in a state of shock. I just spoke with Customer Service at B&H and asked if this was true or a mistake. The rep stated her information right on her screen showed that stock to fulfill ALL backorders was indeed coming in later this week and I could expect my FULL order of the Z9, 24-70 f2.8S and 100-400S to ship early next week and most likely arrive by Wednesday as I have it on a "Next Day" basis. I almost can't believe this is true. How in the world did Nikon (let alone B&H) pull this off? Why would all the customer service reps lie? I don't think they would or it certainly wouldn't do them good to do so. Are we all really in for such a happy New Year?

I'm NOT saying it is the gospel. I'm only saying what they've officially told me. I'm not even saying I completely believe them. But what is entailed here is not only would the NPS folks be on board but ALL those that pre ordered. Believe me I'm NOT losing sleep over belief that this is reality. But a number of folks across several forums and Youtube have been told the exact same thing. How or why is this? Let's face it the CS reps only say what they are told. But it would NOT bode well for them to build expectations only to dash them as I'm' sure you would surely agree. I'll keep you posted on if it's real or NOT. If I don't get a shipment confirmation by Monday or Tuesday I guess the answer will be no.

Who knows how things will turn out. But it is possible that the initial shipment will be higher than many people think. After all, the Z9 hardware has probably been stable and fixed for some time now. Perhaps Nikon has been making Z9 hardware and bodies for some time now, waiting on the final firmware to be nailed down before shipping. We shall see soon enough.

I ordered direct from Nikon on Nov. 9 through NPS. I got the same e-mail as all other NPS members - my Z9 will ship between December 23 and the middle of January. In the meantime, I just keep plugging away with one of the best DSLR's Nikon ever made (D850) and loving every minute of it.

I spoke to someone at B&H today and they told me my preorder (non nps) is marked to be fulfilled January 3rd. Not sure how they came up with that exact date, but someone there did. I ordered on B&H within a minute of them going live.
My local AD has 8 coming in for the Dec 23rd batch, 7 of which are NPS copies.
Edit: also Kenmore camera gave me the same story, just not exact NPS numbers, one overflow z9 on first batch

Thanks for sharing your info. There are now several members of various forums who are being told in the last 1-2 days by B&H that their order is shipping around 12/24-12/28 timeframe including some who ordered days after preorders went up. Meanwhile, there are now multiple posters relaying that their local camera store is being given exactly 1 Z9 for regular retail customers, apart from the units they are receiving that are earmarked for NPS. It sure sounds like Nikon USA is giving priority to B&H this time around at least on first allotment.

I suspect is B&H have some form of internal preorder prioritization going on as well. Maybe repeat customers or value previously spent etc. I've only bought one thing from their online store to date and they won't tell anyone their specific number on the list. I was refreshing their page with f5 until the second I could add to cart. I had to have added to cart and checked out within 30 seconds of the page being live, and my order is out to early Jan. Obviously pure speculation on my end, but I haven't heard anyone else being told January 3rd yet

If that info came out I suspect they'd be in trouble - as far as I know they've said that it's first come first served.
Keep in mind that most early recipients will be people in the NPS queue.

I was just in my local camera shop picking up my 100-400 and literally saw the internal email that said they were getting 3 NPS Z9s and 4 non-NPS Z9s, and since I am number 3 on the list one of the non-NPS units is mine. It also stated in the email that first day of selling will be Dec. 23. They did not yet have the units in the store so we shall see........

I also heard from another B&H customer (non-NPS) that there's will be shipping this week.

Sounds like Nikon is going to have more than the recent rumors (FUD) has been suggesting. I know B&H is a huge store but 4000 cameras on day 1 sounds like a lot to me!!
Not sure why my store in Canada can't even get enough for all the NPS people. Oh well...it will come one day...

Nikon is a piddly 7% of the mirrorless market share. Nearly-irrelevant-Fuji's share is nearly twice as big! I think some people on the Nikon forum grossly overstate the popularity of the Z mount in the market. If I could walk into a local store on "release day" and get 2 just-released Z lenses, I think that bodes well for the big box retailers.
