"Nikon, the company that had been in third place behind Sony and Canon in the full-frame mirrorless market (and it wasn’t a close third place), has not only caught back up but has outright passed them technologically by a considerable margin. “

All that matters to me is what Nikon makes and how good it is compared to what Nikon made last as I am invested in Nikon glass.

With the arrival of the Z9, the top position in the professional mirrorless world is now shared with Nikon.

This will become more apparent, as more pros become familar with the Z9.

Each brand has certain features that are better than the other.

And the competition benefits all photographers.

I notice for the first time this morning my Z9 order at B&H only says “Coming Soon”, with no mention of shipping starting Dec. 15 (as it did up until today). 100-400 S lens order still says shipping begins Dec. 16.

For some time in reference to my actual order, it has been consistently showing "Backordered" with the one lens, the 24-70 f.28S showing "new order" which of course is actually in stock. I do see online on the website it does indeed now show "Coming Soon" and they've dropped the December 15th notation. But then after all December 15th is soon indeed. Guess I'll find out when I speak to them Wednesday afternoon to see if I'm in that first shipment planned to go out. I haven't been counting on it pretty much from the start knowing how many are in front of me in the Pre Orders let alone that while B&H ordered 3000 bodies, they'd be lucky to the 100.

Interesting article. 100% based on the spec sheet, 0% based on hands on use. Seems like the worst type of click-bait out there. Even after reading the article I can't figure out what specs they are basing the "outright passed them by a considerable margin" on? Reads like 120FPS 11MP jpegs and video codecs?

I have always seen the Z9 as a camera that's basically there to keep what's left of Nikons pro user base from jumping ship, not to get Sony's pro user base to jump ship to it. From what I've seen basically everybody should be happy with something that's on the market from any of the big three companies. But I'm probably too realistic for some of these conversations.

Maybe....
But if you've been using a Nikon for so long, the ergonomics and image look and feel will win back the ship jumpers given the AF is as good or better than Nikon DSLRs.
I think Nikon is in good shape with the Z9. In a couple years, they will have the superteles in Z mount to make the Z system be really competitive. 400mm f2.8 coming out soon. 600mm f4 on the horizon. They got 500mm PF formula that they need to milk out by putting in the 400mm PF and 800mm pF(also on the roadmap). And not to mention if they've figured out their mirrorless AF recipes on the Z9, there will be more competitive cameras coming in the next couple years.
The future is bright for Nikon Z system. Much lighter wallet for Nikon gear heads like me. I'm looking forward for the 600mm f4 and 800mm PF and 85mm f1.2.

Z9 and oddly the Z6II make me glad I didn't 100% go the Sony route. I have Sony gear, but I've been shooting Nikon more since basically 2020. Some people won't come back, but if they can gain back a few that'd be interesting.

I am guessing the target technology at the top will move relatively quickly. Now that stacked sensor technology is becoming widely available, I am expecting Global shutter sensor to make their appearance in ILC cameras in the near future.

I still think a lot of things are going to be tiered for a bit. I don't exactly see stacked sensors in something like a Z6II level camera, though I would love for Nikon to release something like an A9 because not everything needs to be 45mp and up.

What I see over here beside keeping Nikon user base with Nikon, I also see cases of people who abandoned Nikon for another brand at least considering moving back to Nikon. I think there are some people who otherwise like Nikon's ergonomics, color, haptics whatever but moved to another brand because they needed a more capable camera but now Nikon offers a camera that they like with the performance that can match competitors. So some people might decide to move back if financially feasible.
Also at least one local small company that do mostly wedding photography and video ordered several Z9 mainly for video use to replace another brand that they are currently using.

Z9 is not going to sell in quantity that will affect market share much but hopefully it will give momentum to Nikon to re-establish themselves in the competition again if they can captitalize on Z9 success with their next few bodies.

I regret to inform you that your preorder did go to Fro and you have now been placed at the back of the line. We expect delivery of your camera Q3 2022. We appreciate your business and you "taking one for the team" to allow Fro to provide important sniff and wind tunnel tests to the masses.

Well that's cool. I'm assuming Canon to get 8K without overheating, but who knows. I'm glad the stuff is getting more traction. Like I honestly don't care who "wins," but having as many viable options out there for people is definitely a plus for the consumer.

And there are plenty out there from Sony that have no citations.

What did you think about my above comment? Did you like it?

Canon should certainly be able to do that but they have a slightly different agenda. Since they already have a well establish video segment, I am not sure that they want to compete with themselves or not. In the past, they are the one that tend to cripple some of their models a bit for no good reason just to differentiate between each line of product clearly. Nikon on the other hand dont have to compete with themselves and can pretty much throw everything they can into Z9.
