I’d be shocked if the long glass wasn’t released concurrently.

While the rumored specs aren’t ground breaking if they would come to fruition the Z9 would be a better overall package than the A1 and R5, IMO. Just achieving an even playing field will make a lot of Nikon users happy.

They are pleasing specs. But nothing that innovates...just keeping up.

Unless the body design comes out different than the one spotted in Tokyo, it won't be a body on my radar anytime soon. And there is a lot of things Nikon has to do with the FW/customization to make this a worthwhile investment to me.

But the biggest issue for me is the lack of lenses. Yes I'd be happy to use my 500PF but I'm not spending $9K CAD to shoot my

I don't know. I find Nikon's approach confusing, to be honest. The R5, in hindsight, makes sense. It was Canon's very successful effort to stop the bleeding. It came out and people thought it was overpriced. Then Sony released the A1 and suddenly the R5 looked like an incredible value. Top tier AF, 45MP, 20FPS, and almost half the price of the A1.

I see the R5 as Canon's forward bulkhead against the A1. Looking back, it seems obvious that Canon was aware of the A1's imminent release and wanted to make sure the R5 was out before it was launched. Now it doesn't matter if people are disappointed with the R3 because it's aimed at the professionals who wanted smaller files and a faster work flow, along with the increase in speed, and benefits of a stacked sensor.

This buy them time to make the R1 and get it right. The earnings report show this was very successful.

Meanwhile, you have Nikon, who focused not on fast glass but instead on high quality yet slower F1.8 / F4 glass... then proceeds not to release an R5 competitor at a price point that would be financially appealing to the majority but rather the minority that spends 6-7k on a pro body.

So they appear to have gone one direction with the lenses but another with the body. IMO, their top priority should be to get an R5 competitor out as quickly as possible to appeal to the larger overall potential user base and then do the flagship afterwards once they've locked customers into their system (by appeasing them, such as Canon has done with the R5 & R6).

How did Nikon focus on 1.8 and F 4 glass when they also put out basically the sharpest set of trinity zooms and the 50 1.2? Also the 50 1.8 is basically the best 50 1.8 from all three manufacturers. It sounds like you're just tearing down Nikon without having any idea of what they actually have produced.

That's fair, but my point was primarily in comparison to Canon who went with the faster lenses first and prosumer priced body with top tier features.

The Z9 looks impressive and I hope it's every bit as impressive as it appears, but overall it's going to be out of the price range a lot of the current and potential customers for the Nikon ecosystem who are eyeing their options and seeing the current trend (and hype) of the R5/R6 and the slew of Sony cameras available.

I just don't see how this helps them in the next year or two with their current market position.

Not trying to be disparaging. I'm invested in the Nikon system and it's in my best interest to see them succeed.

Canon didn't even release a top tier body till the R5 and R6 released, they came out with great glass though. Nikon oddly prioritized stuff that was easier to afford. Would I prefer if they released the 50 1.2 and 85 1.2 quicker? Yes. Can work be done with the 1.8 equivalents? Yes. Nikon's just being what they have always been. Slow. The optics are good though, there's just nothing that sets the headlines on fire.

I shoot wildlife. I decided months ago that my 500PF and sometimes my 200-500 will be my primary Z9-glass for as long as it takes.

I’ll probably do what I usually do: Closely listen to Z-9-conclusions of one or two other top-shellf wildlife photographers.
When the 500PF started showing, I took in all its images that folks posted. And in the end, when I wanted it, I had it two days later. In the meantime, I will continue with my D850/500PF.

Some are saying they will refuse to trust the FTZ adapter, yet they have absolutely no data that demonstrates this AF speed either way. They cannot because there is none yet.

Wildlife photographer Brad Hill shoots long Nikon glass as much as anyone I’d guess. Any conclusions he makes are from countless hours of shooting wildlife.

Here is his final statement, at the end of a needlessly long explanation on his blog (he calls these blathings

I excerpted Brad Hill quote from his blog:

"Over the last 5 months I have been shooting adapted a number of different adapted F-mount super-telephotos and super-telephoto zooms (Nikkor 180-400mm f4E, Nikkor 120-300mm f2.8E, Nikkor 500mm f5.6E PF, etc.) on my Z 7II and Z 6II a LOT. My gut feel about FTZ impact on AF performance? Well...if there is a speed reduction, I haven't noticed it (i.e., it is so negligible as to be irrelevant to me). But I HAVE noticed that the AF accuracy of those F-mount lenses is better when shot on a Z-Series camera (with FTZ adapter) than when shot on my D5 or D6.”

That’s good enough for me.

Well the 50 1.2 and 14-24 2.8 are relatively new releases, but I think Nikon focused on high quality 1.8 lenses to go with similar quality of bodies. Nikon knows the Z6ii/7ii limitations, why release lenses that highlight said limitations? I think a lot of people were soured over the state of the original Z’s when first released because Sony set the bar and expectations high. Imagine how many people would have ditched their D850/500 if the long lenses were released early only to be disappointed and write off Nikon completely. By the time the Z9 is released there will be a nice line up of lenses near the same time that go well with that type of body (400/600/100-400 plus the 85 1.2).

They're growing their system at their own rate, which sadly isn't fast enough for a lot of people. I'm invested in E mount and quite frankly these days just shoot my Z6II more and I have an RIV of all things, great camera, just rarely in the mood to shoot it. The Z6II can probably handle an 85 1.2 as well, BIF and fast action no, that's Z9 territory. Nikon messed up a bit in how their cameras just require a lot more effort from the photographer, which doesn't really bother me too much. The first Z cameras are a pass, the second gens aren't too bad. If the Z9 is where it should be then the third gens should be quite good, which is basically the same amount of bodies it took Sony. I give them time and actually use the Z cameras. If I didn't like the system I wouldn't have just bought the 50 1.2 today and would've sent the Z6II back to Adorama already...and not put what I think is 30K clicks on it already.

Yeah, I'm invested on the F mount side of things but watching things carefully with the Z series. Once they have something that competes with the R5 and A9, I'm switching to their mirrorless side of things.

It's good to hear that the F mount telephoto lenses like the 500PF work well, as that is what I am currently using with my D850.

I'm not against getting the Z9; but wouldn't balk at the idea of a Nikon equivalent of an R5 at $3800ish either.

I too consider 45 mpx perfect. I too have stated that it is the sweetspot. I have been shooting the D850’s 45 mpx files for years and I llove them. The extraordinary quality of the D850 fils is the principle reason my go-to is still the D850.

I do not pay attention to DR and high noise at any ISO. That's because the DXO PhotoLab 4 (Prime option) is part of my work flow.

There was a time after the Z9 was announced that i thought I would like 60 mpx.

A little more background: Up until January 2021 my “upgraded" 2011 Macbookpro has been my only computere since 2011. And it was extremely slow at processing even a few large D850 RAWs simultaneouly.

I do not like post-processing at all! In fact, I shoot wildlife because I have always loved nature. Frankly, all the work that comes with the photography part is stressful. By far, for me, the most enjoyable part of most shoots is watching the animal's behavior. I am a nature photojournallist.

I felt I needed to release myself from the stress of waiting for images to process.

In January 2021 I bought a powerful iMac and it turns out that it *eats* 45 mpx files, even a group of them together in DXO PhotoLab 4.

The other problem with these large mpx cameras is storage. I already need 8TB SATA harddrives. Nope, 45 mpx is all I want .

45 mpx is my sweetspot

Good Light

Ah, the "sweet spot"

It was 6, then 12, then 24, then 36 and now 45.

Where will it end?

I've buckled and just put my order in for a Z9.

I think you are missing some of the weaknesses of the R5. Sure it shoots 20 fps, but only in electronic shutter mode and only when the battery is fully charged. The electronic shutter mode means some pretty big losses in dynamic range and for faster action some noticeably rolling shutter issues. And if the battery charge drops you lose the 20 fps as well as the camera slows down. These are real and not trivial limitations, IMO. In many situations the R5 is a 12 fps mechanical shutter camera. That is still a quite decent thing to be, but one shouldn't confuse that camera with the 30fps stacked sensor BSI sensors in the Sony A1 or the sensor with similar capabilities in the Z9. You get a lot more for the extra money with those cameras. I am not saying a less capable but less expensive camera is a good idea, but let's not be fooled into thinking the R5 isn't a lot less capable than the A1 and the Z9 (if Nikon gets it right).

Also keep in mind that Nikon has a very interesting less capable less expensive camera in the Z7 II. That camera is excellent for shooting things that don't move or move slowly, and that covers a lot of what a lot of people want to shoot. Landscapes, architecture, still life, most nature photography, macro, and even a lot of portraits the Z7 II is a fantastic camera and in a number of ways a lot better than the R5 at a cheaper price. Sure the R5 can be used for some types of shooting that the Z7 II doesn't do as well, but if you don't shoot those things then the R5 clearly isn't better.

Note I am not saying the Canon R5 isn't a groundbreaking and really interesting camera. I think it is all of that. It is the first camera to put fairly high MP shooting together with good fast action capability. That was quite an accomplishment and it is still a compelling camera at its price point. The A1 and Z9 are clearly better, but they are way more expensive.

I also think it is a really interesting question how Nikon should try to compete with the R5. Should they try to build a similar camera without a stacked BSI sensor but with lots of processing power and lots of compromises to boost sensor scan speed or should they opt for a more expensive camera, but less than the Z9 that has a stacked BSI sensor. Personally, I think they are better off going with the stacked sensor BSI and go for a price point of $5,000 for the Z8. This would be a smaller camera body, it would have less processing power than the Z9, it would have a smaller buffer, it might well be 20 fps (but a real 20 fps) instead of 30 fps, but it would still have very fast sensor scan speed and no or virtually no rolling shutter effect. Such a camera for $5,000 which is still clearly better than the R5 I think competes well even with the R5 at a lower price of $3,800. Keep in mind Nikon still has the Z7II and Z6II for people with other needs.

How long will it take for us wildlife photographers to get our hands on the first long S glass?

The only basis I have for forming an opinion on when the long S glass shows, is my experiences with Nikon over many years.

I do not expect Nikon to jump to the task for us wildlife photogs and prioritize t the 200-600 or any of the other long glass. They always do what they want and they can be annoying.

You all know that by now.

Through the decades I feel that Canon was much more accomodating to us wildlife photographers.

Nikon can be so abstract with their promo imagery, to be absurd. Ok, you can show me some examples of Nikon promoting with wildlife images, but I’ll show many more of the ridiculous abstract promo imagery.

Who can forget that outrageous all-white scene of woman standing next to a stuff lion? All elements of the scene were super-white. When you add the white stuffed lion, the image for me.......is sick! What is wrong with you Nikon? I am serious! There, I said exactly how i have felt for decades!

Canon has always been out front promoting their stuff with wildlife images.

Again, I am only guessing on the roadmap sequence.

I don’t think we will see one single long S lens until well into the roadmap devleopment..

Show the forum I was incorrect Nikon.

Robert

On tis one folks....please do not be too hard on me because I went out on a limb

Also, I honestly have no problem with you expressing counter opinions.

** Nikon have 20+ Z mount in the wild in 《3 years plus 7 Mirrorless cameras. The Z System summaries rate them all as Recommended, excellent, Solid investments, Nikon doing f1.8 primes is equally sensible. Most photographers cling to the dogma you have to shut down a f1.2 or f1.4 prime for decent IQ at f1.8 Today's f1.8S Nikkors deliver edge to edge sharpness. The f4 Zooms are highly Recommended, notably the light 14-30 f4S using 82mm filters. So there're Big distinctions in these f1.8S primes, which many have overlooked....

** Nikon's 3 dragons aka f2.8S Trinity extend the leading industry status of the F mount versions, and look no further than the 70-200 f2.8S. Surprisingly, this beats the E FL model, which works very well on Z cameras thanks to the FTZ adapter. The14-24 f2.8S is the best landscape lens ever made, and it outperforms many of the primes;
https://www.zsystemuser.com/z-mount-lenses/nikkor-lenses/nikon-z-mount-lens-reviews/

** the quality of the new pair of Z-TCs outperform the F mount versions, tested on the 70-200 S

** to cite above post by bs_kite.... Brad Hill concluded what many have experienced in practice. The FTZ works reliably with G and E Nikkors... with over 77 options available. Including about a dozen AFS telephotos. There are of course many 3rd party F-mount lenses. Nothing more to add...

** Steve underscores the plain facts (often overlooked): the Z7 cameras are excellent for all subjects, stationary and slower moving eg trains, bridal couples dancing, dogs, cats etc etc...

** Nikon will have launched 30 Z Nikkors by mid 2022 , ie probably within 9 to 10 months. These will include four S telephotos.

** oh while i remember to add.... the flagship Z9 will be shipping by xmas to those first in line.... an extending line

The R5 maintains 20 fps with the electronic shutter even when the battery is run down. It’s in the manual and I’ve checked it out in a 4 second burst at a quarter charged. There isn’t a massive loss of DR either. The fps drops only in the other shutter modes. Nikon will catch up on it.

This looks pretty amazing.

I will def. buy the Z9 if these specs are correct, then i'll add the new S trinity and perhaps a 500pf or a used FL prime (they are getting pretty cheap all things considered) and i will be setup for years!

Can hardly wait for christmas to come around!
