p.1 #1 · New Z9 Specs (NR) Aug 10th, 2021

I don't see anything ground breaking in these specs....just keeping up with the Jones....still it is what will make people happy...more so I'd think than 24MPs in an R3
Not sure where the "3rd joystick" is as it wasn't on the leaked Olympic bodies.
Also are people really not able to focus on cars with current tech? R3 mentions this as a new feature also. I shot F1 since back in 2010 and it was about the easiest moving thing I've ever shot.

From Nikon Rumors (link below):

As I already reported, several photographers starter to test the Nikon Z9 and we are starting to get some additional information on the upcoming flagship. The Z9 was at the Olympics and there are plenty of images floating online with erased EXIF data. For now I will not post any of them online since I do want want to spook the photographers using the camera since I am hoping to get more info.

I received some additional details on the upcoming Nikon Z9 mirrorless cameras:

8256 x 5504px resolution that confirms a 45MP stacked sensor (it is interesting to note that Canon decided to go with a 24MP sensor for their R3 camera).
The Z9 will be capable of up to 120 fps in a lower res file size (6Mb I think). Some reports even indicated 160 fps!
Built-in GPS – probably GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System).
The Z9 will use the same battery as D6. There will be also a new 18-type battery (EN-EL18x) that can be charged by the camera’s USB-C.
The sensor has multi leaf blade protective shutter that auto covers sensor when switched off/changing lens to stop dust and dirt on naked sensor.
The Z9 will have car autofocus in addition to animal and people AF as well as low light -7 EV.
Improved 3D tracking.
Improved articulated screen that even works in portrait mode – it is a completely new design.
New style locking flap for the two CFExpress memory cards.
Third joystick/selector added to use whilst camera close face and shooting.
Many new menu features to tweak and match your shooting style.
The shutter release sound level can be adjusted from silent to loud… so you can still get that D6 machine gun sound…
The official announcement is expected in the next 2 months, but do not expect many cameras to ship before the end of the year. Because of part shortage, the waiting time for the Z9 is expected to be very long.

Previously rumored Nikon Z9 specs:

Newly developed 45MP high-resolution stacked FX sensor
30 fps
Integrated vertical grip handle
The Z9 is described as a D6 body combined with EOS R5 imaging, α9II AF, and blackout-free EVF
Nikon confirmed that the Z9 will be better than the D6
Multishot-mode
16-bit RAW option
8k30p, 4k120/60/30p (support for 8K video recording)
New EXPEED image-processing engine designed for 8k (newly developed Imaging Pipeline Processor to broaden sensor readout emphasizing speed)
Improved AF (Object detection AF)
“Stunning” AF tracking (better than the D6)
Advanced real-time tracking
Two XQD/CFX type B memory card slots
ISO 64 – 25,600, Hi1, Hi2
Improved noise levels and specifically significantly better dynamic range
High resolution, blackout-free EVF: probably 5.76 MP or maybe even 9k MP viewfinder, 120 Hz refresh rate (the resolution can be reduced to increase the refresh rate)
New user interface (no second LCD screen on the back like the D6)
New battery: Nikon EN-EL18x
Gbit LAN, USB-C, WiFi, GPS, built-in transmitter
Price: $6,000 – $7,000
Scheduled to be tested in August
Rumored to be announced in November/December (no exact shipping date available so far)
With the Z9 Nikon basically combined the D6 and D850 and made it mirrorless…

I think that these are worthy of a "Wow!"
They may not be groundbreaking for an A1 user or those looking at the R3, but for those that prefer the build, form factor, and lenses in the Nikon ecosystem, it appears that this body will meet the needs of those who have decided to wait.

I have never made peace with a $6500 camera purchase, but I think that I will be pre-ordering the Z9 as soon as I can. I will likely have to sell my right nut (I'm 56, probably valued at $15) and some cameras, but I would like to be done with the endless search for "the camera."

regards,
bruce

Sounds great to me! Thanks.

I wanted 45mpx and the articulating screen. I will love silently or quietly/capturing 850-like files and working them in post

Looks like the hunt is about over.

Right nut? $15. . That's way funny Bruce, especially when you equated age to its value. OL

Your last sentence characterizes what I am thinking too. This does sound like "the camera".. We know it will be a rock. All top end Nikons are built extra.

The $6500 is outrageous. I decided months ago that if it checks all of our (my) boxes (and apparently this one will) I will find a way to cough up the loot, knowing that this camera will make me happy over many years.

Best to you
Robert

One of the claimed specs that I think could be important to some if it works well is AF at -7EV. It doesn't get much attention but that is a big improvement in Nikon land in low light AF.

I'll need to see a strong commitment backed with release dates for the 600S and 200-600 lenses before I'd invest in this camera. At this point, buying the Z9 would be to use my 500PF and to test the body against R5, A1 and maybe R3. I do enjoy experiencing the best for myself as very few shoot what I try to shoot so online reviews don't usually tell me much. I know there will be lots of rave reviews from Nikon shooters when the Z9 is out because it surely will greatly surpass the current Z cameras and the D6 (in many/most ways). But very few, if any, will have tried the competition so raving AF reviews will mean little. Steve Perry and now Steve Martheis will be the two I watch because Steve P is now shooting A1 and his wife R5. Steve M. now shooting A1 also but ready to be back to Z9 ASAP.

I'll be watching the Z9 with anticipation but it is a bit lower down on my potential purchase list right now.

Works for me! So happy to hear about car autofocus! Huh? 🤣

I’m sure if the AF is better than the D6 it will rival the A1 which certainly will help.

Not sure why anyone would want to make the shutter sound louder but whatever!

Looking forward to having one!

One of the tricks that mirrorless brings to the table is claimed "focus down to" some unbelievable number. There is an asterisk though in that it will focus using only super wide open lenses like F1.2. My old 99II will focus any lens at -4 ev, try that with any of these mirrorless flagships.

Looks awesome. What will tip me towards this camera is a Z mount 600PF. But to be honest if the 200-600 is also outstanding, it would also be a motivating factor. Has to be really good though.

nothing mentioned about elimination of rolling shutter distortion. if that thing is 8K and still using a rolling shutter and there are visible artifacts

Well we will see what it means. Usually an f/2 lens is the standard for such claims, but low light AF is something that is not often discussed and something that I care about.

Well, nothing directly mentioned but the stacked BSI sensor that is pretty much claimed along with the 30 fps suggests there will be little rolling shutter, but we won't know until someone tests the sensor scan speed. I would love to see the sensor scan speed reported for every camera by the manufacturer, but so far it is only a spec that we learn about after the camera comes out and people test for it.

that is something that should be on the spec page of a $6K+us camera that pushes the 4k/8k recording as a feature these days.

No mention of Bird Eye-AF
No mention of flash with ES (which would give us a good idea about sensor read speed if it had ES flash-sync)

Why make this 45MP sensor? They could just use the A1 sensor and save on cost

That is something we can't possibly know. Would Sony sell them the same sensor as their flagship? Maybe, maybe not. Would it save them money? Maybe, but maybe Sony won't sell them it at a price that saves money.

Well, this is just a leak at this point. It is hard to expect everything to come out. We will know more in a couple of months when a more complete set of specs are released and I expect those two specs to be released at that time. It will be interesting if you can use the ES with flash at all, and that will be our best clue to sensor scan speed. I doubt they will release the actual sensor scan speed as nobody is doing that yet, even though I agree with sims that they should.

That's interesting I mean the production line for that 50MP sensor is already there and all the R&D went into it, I just can't see why they need to do a 45MP sensor that's really close to 50MP, unless this 45MP sensor will go into the next A9 or even A7? They have to use it else where for the cost to make sense.
Or maybe it is that A1 sensor they just used some internal software to make it 45MP so it doesn't sound as cool as the A1.
