p.5 #1 · New Z9 Specs (NR) Aug 10th, 2021

The big gap in this rumoured list - Native ISO Range? This is surprising, considering experienced professionals testing prototypes have presumably leaked the latest list of specs.

What is the native ISO range of the Z9 sensor? We know 45mp of Nikon's D850 (and Z7) = 64 - 25600; Z6 = 100 - 51200, D6 = 100 - 102400;
Canon R5 = 100 - 51200, R6 = 100 - 25600;
Sony a1 = 100 - 32000

NR posted ISO 64 – 25,600, but, this was a rumour from months back, long before the Tokyo Games.

From what I heard, I think it may be awhile before Nikon will truely has a real answer to R5 or a true upgrade to D850 even.
Z8 should be released sometimes next year but looks like Nikon is heading in a different direction with that so the closest to R5 and D850 will be Z7 ii for awhile. Now, with the rumored upcoming firmware, may be AF-c will catch up or exceed D850 but I dont know about R5. However, I doubt the new firmware will fix slideshow EVF in Hi+ mode so even if AF-C is better than D850, EVF may still be its weak point in comparison to D850. FPS wont improve so it does not compare to R5 unless you limit R5 to mechanical shutter only then it is close.
However, beside AF-C and EVF in H+ mode, I think Z7 ii already equals or exceeds D850 in many way and if you shoot mainly landscape, portrait, street rather than wildlife/sports, Z7 ii is already a perfectly fine body.

🙂. Actually there was a doubt. It is bigger (and probably heavier) than I want and it is very expensive - more than I normally spend on a camera. I would never buy a D5 or D6 due to size, weight and price. However, I don't think the Z9 will be as large or heavy as a D5/6 and this is one part of the equation that swayed me, the other part being the incredible specs.🙂

So you are underwhelmed by the A1 I presume? It's not like these cameras are a dime a dozen. And you have no idea about EVF quality, AF, battery life, 8K options. There's only so much you can do. What else should they have done other than a global shutter?

Also Nikon has already shown the lens roadmap, 400 f/2.8 and 600 f/4 Z S are coming, do you really think they will be same weight as FL versions?

Are you just putting words in my mouth now? "underwhelms"? I said "pleasing specs" and I said "nothing ground breaking" "what will make people happy" in relation to the specs. Where you got underwhelmed out of those three statements is beyond me.

The A1 had some groundbreaking specs like 1/240s read speeds, ES flash sync, 120 AF/s, 9,44M dot EVF with 240Hz refresh option and 50x30.

The R5 had 45x20 and BEAF also groundbreaking for when it was released.

So no I'm not underwhelmed by the A1 (or R5) and I'm not underwhelmed by the Z9. As I said, I don't see anything new in these specs. Do you see something in them I'm missing? Shooting 6MP jpegs at 120/s is different but I'd never use it...especially if they are video frame grabs.
So far I see 5.75M EVF, 120Hz, 45x30....that is all behind...it is all perfectly acceptable and enough for me to buy if other specs fell into place but still behind.

All I said about the 600S is it needs to be available...like I can order it from my dealer and he can give me a delivery estimate (like 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months). I'm not spending $9K to shoot my 500PF.

Anyways, my biggest hesitation about the Z9, even if it matched every spec on the A1/R5/R3, are the haptics which includes the lack of a 3rd wheel and the lack of more back buttons I can program to do alternative focus modes. Also if it just repurposes the look and options of the AF modes from the current Z cameras. I just don't like the modes available in them, how they look on screen, and their behaviour. Nikon needs to take the DSLR options and port them directly to the Z9 and then back them up with superior stacked sensor PDAF. If they do that then we are getting somewhere. Get Group over there and make it D6 customizable.

I should clarify that these specs are about as good as I expected. Right up there with the very best from the competition. Actual AF performance and button customization are TBD. Nikon's DSLR AF history and the stacked sensor give me optimism about the camera's performance.

I think you need to check your facts on some of this stuff.

R5 maintains 20FPS down to 0% battery. I've tested it at about 5%.
R5 ES DR is identical to MS from ISO 800 and above. I don't know about you, but when shooting fast action with a fast SS and wanting 20FPS I'm usually at 800 or above.
Not sure why the R5 is a MS camera? Every wildlife photographer I know who owns it and myself when I did own it, shot it in ES 90-100% of the time. Pius, Rob (RobAmy), Dave (lighthound) and other Canon R5 shooters all use ES all the time.

The R5 is hands down the best value for my type of bird/wildlfie photography. Yes the A1 has some advantages....they really aren't worth the price premium that exists though. I really can't think of many/any shots that the A1 can get where the R5 can't.
I'll be revisiting the R5 this weekend to see if I may head back to CanonLand with the R5 or R3.

I do shed a tear sometimes when I see it sitting there in my "Nikon bag". I try to shoot it ever so often (as I did this past Sunday on the D500). I try to adapt it to Sony A1 once in awhile. I read some promising reports about adapting it with the new Monster adapter FW. I may have to get one of those as adapting it with the Commlite I have is pitiful. But man the IQ is nice on the 50MP A1.

Bravo Lance on the pre-order...
I want a camera with these specs. While I am excited for its introduction and claimed my willingness for a partial castration ( ) to buy one, the price is a real barrier. When Nikon released the D5 and its innovative AF system, they somehow managed to produce a lower priced, but equally competent D500 in secrecy. Everyone knew the D5 was out there and being tested, nobody knew about the D500. As I plan for and stash dollars for my July 2022 trip to Zimanga in South Africa, I am holding out hope for a "lesser" camera with some of the Z9 innovation.
I love my D500 bodies, in fact, I sold my D850 because I prefer the 20MP D500 files and found that the D850 just languished at home. For me, a guy looking to travel internationally and in search of a new mini-camper van, a $6500 Z9 will have to be pretty incredible if I am going to buy one.

Well, the D400 was rumored about year after year after year until it came out as the D500. For sure there had been a lot of rumors about various iterations of the pro-DX DSLR. Thom Hogan, Nikonrumors etc. numerous other sites had periodical rumors and predictions about this project. There were facebook groups and websites dedicated to D400 rumors. It just wasn't called "D500".

Here is the loss in DR. With both the electronic shutter and 20 fps it is a bout a stop and half loss of DR at base ISO:

https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon%20EOS%20R5,Canon%20EOS%20R5(ES),Canon%20EOS%20R5(HS)

As yes the drop in frame rate with battery charge is for the mechanical shutter, which means that when you can't use the electronic shutter (which happens when you have issues with rolling shutter shooting fast action) then you don't even get the full 12 fps if the battery runs down. I know I worded it so it sounded like I was saying the drop in fps was in ES mode. My bad, but that doesn't change that the fps does drop in manual shutter mode and that can be an issue for some.

I totally agree with your assessment here, but I keep hearing rumors the Z8 will use the same sensor as the Z9 but be a smaller body and not have the processing power of the Z9. It will be interesting whether Nikon decides to go that way or with a higher MP Z8. I have thought that the higher MP camera with be the Z7 III, but who knows.

Geoff I think you do know why I am making those comments about the R5 being a manual shutter camera and that is rolling shutter effect. It can be an issue with the camera and it of course depends totally on what you are shooting. These camera are used not just for wildlife, but also for things like sports. In sports shooting the ball often gets distorted with the R5 in ES. Note I actually said the R5 was a groundbreaking camera and I also said it was a great value. That does not mean, however, that it can do everything the A1 can do. The R5 may do almost everything the A1 does for your shooting, but that won't be true for others. The much faster sensor scan speed of the A1 definitely has its advantages and pretty much complete elimination of rolling shutter effects is one of them.

And again while you may not shoot at lower ISOs there are definitely times when others will want to do so. That too is a clear advantage of the A1.

The bottom line is that you seem to only be evaluating the camera for the way you shoot, and that is fine as long as that is clear and you don't imply that what holds for you holds for other people. The much slower sensor scan speed of the Canon R5 than the Sony A1 will be an issue for some. The low DR at base ISO which is especially bad with the ES and high speed shooting is another issue for some. Finally, when ES mode is an issue further drops in shutter speed as the battery looses charge will be yet another issue for some. No use denying these deficits. None of that makes the R5 a bad camera. It is a great camera and if its limitations don't affect your shooting then it can be wonderful camera for people that aren't affected by its limitations. It is a great value even with its limitations, but let's not pretend there are no issues for anyone with this camera.

The specs look really good. The price will be a bit out of the range I'd like to spend though. Maybe Nikon will surprise us all with a 'baby' version sometime down the road. Like when D3/D700 was released.

I've shot extensively with the D6 for a couple of months now and if the Z9 is better at action photography, that will be some camera.

At 45 megapixels, 30 frames per second, with improved AF, in a pro style body with longer battery life, the Z9 looks, on paper, to be the real deal for Nikon pro sports photographers.

For me, adaptability of F mount lenses is the determining factor as I am not replacing an AFS 24-70 f/2.8, AFS 200-400 f/4, AFS 200 f/2, AFS 70-200 f/2.8 or AFS 400 f/2.8 with Z lenses.

I will need to see unbiased field tests from sporting events taken with the Z9 and my own tests before pulling the trigger.

I will be very surprised if the adapted F Mount lenses can do 30 fps, possibly not even the 20 fps. I am expecting somewhere near 15 fps. This is common in other lines as well. They were not designed for those spends and I don't think their motors can keep up.

So far we don't have any feedback from the field, or statements from Nikon on this. In acknowledgement of that I state it as an expectation and am open to be surprised.

Nikon like Sony A mount have mechanical apertures (excepting newer Nikon lenses) which does limit fps somewhat.
