p.25 #1 · Pre-Order Sony Alpha A1 (50MP, 30fps, 8K)

A friend of mine shoots Fuji GFX, and he's seriously considering their 100S. But it's expensive; he'll probably wait for a better price.

I have an A7R4 and an A9 II, and I've already ordered the A1. It's not expensive, because it takes all the features that I wanted to combine from my two primary cameras, adds features I didn't know I wanted, and wraps it all up.

So looking forward to its arrival.

I just figured out an excellent new feature of the A1. It has a 30/15FPS option...what that means for me is I will finally get bursts of Bufflehead ducks where the wing positions don't perfectly alternate frame to frame.

It is uncanny at 20FPS that all you ever get with a Bufflehead at full tilt is two wing positions (unless they slow for landing or bank to the side). They must flap at a perfect 1/10s. My favorite wing position is full down stroke for this specific duck. Sometimes I'll get a 60 shot sequence with just two alternating wing positions
...Show more

This made me smile when I read it yesterday.

I woke up this morning with the revelation* that you could break the "10 or 20fps" wingbeat sync issue in your a9 already, by turning on Uncompressed RAW whenever you're shooting a bufflehead. It changes the top framerate to 12fps, right? Those wings would cycle into a different position. It'd be a bizarre thing to have to micromanage when out shooting birds,

"Oh cripes! A bufflehead! Quick, menu-dive!"

But hey.

*(this is a very dull thing to admit, but that's lockdown for you)

I feel like it's best to take these youtubers as sources with their biases and flaws in mind. If you understand these, it's a lot easier to do an accuracy assessment on their takes in your head.

As someone without access to Lenrentals services (would love being able to rent what I'm considering buying) I think there's still value in watching these just for another data point when making assessments on equipment and doing planning.

I have a noob question, I will set the file format to lossless compression, in the very rare occasions when I put the drive mode dial at 30FPS, will the camera automatically overwrite the lossless compression format and change it to lossy compression because 30FPS can only give you lossy compressed files? I hope I won’t have to manually change the lossless compression format to lossy every time I want to use the 30FPS, and change it back to lossless afterwards.

Yeah, with all the pain and suffering going on, we are focusing on whether our expensive toy can select birds’ right eye or left eye in the birds eye AF tracking.. But in all seriousness, everyone needs to have some fun and have something to look forward to, especially when it’s so depressing.

My best guess is no. Instead it will only shoot 20FPS even if your dial is on H+. On the A9/A9II if you are in Uncompressed it just shoots at the slower 12 FPS if the dial is on H (20FPS).

Probably fastest way will be to either set a My Menu item for changing the RAW type. Or possibly make use of the M1,2,3 settings which would mean switching to a different M mode. Although I also never use M modes so not sure how they work, which settings they retain/don't retain.

Yes that is a good point. That has actually crossed my mind. I've yet to ever try shooting Uncompressed and using the modified FPS. I'm going to try that this morning on my buffleheads!!

I was going to ask the question on whether the M1,2,3 settings could solve this potential issue. In the non A9 models, there is no physical drive mode dial and the drive mode is changed via the control wheel, the M1,2,3 can save pretty much all the settings, including the drive mode. When I had the A9, I didn't check if the M1,2,3 had any control over the drive mode which is controlled by the physical dial.

Worst comes to worst, I can set M1 for lossless and M2 for lossy, if I need to use 30 FPS, I will recall M2 and put the drive mode dial at H+, when I am done with it I will recall M1 and change the drive mode dial to H, just a few extra steps, first world problem.

This would make for an incredible hand-held landscape camera. The fast frame rate at high MP is great for doing multi-shot bursts for effective lower ISO levels of noise. Combined with IBIS, the need for tripods can be reduced significantly. Tripods are handy, but often too restrictive in speed of setup and versatility in camera positions.

That buffer clearing to CFE-A looks slower than the Sony Pro was hyping it to be. Certainly longer than 2s.

But look at him shooting in M (video says 10 but that is supposedly really 15FPS)...basically unlimited...the bar never drops till much later in the burst...basically the card would fill before you had to stop .

I've got a feeling that the Sony Pro Q+A guy was just talking about JPG shooting when it came to buffer clearing.

from the first video, it looks like you get 5-6 seconds at H+ mode before it "slows" down. For the occasions when I want to use 30 FPS, that's more than good enough.

that guy is also shooting RAW + jpg. sweet jesus, if you guys need longer than 3-4seconds of 30fps, youre no longer shooting photos, youre making a movie. just shoot it at 8k 30p and screen grab.

That is probably right...also when they kept talking about high-ISO being so great....likely just the jpeg engine improvements. Probably none of them shot RAW yet without updated software (although I guess Sony may have given them a pre-release of their own software).

Not sure what type of RAW he was shooting either?? Can anyone translate the upper left overlays he put on the videos?

Here are Sony's published buffer specs...

I am sorry. I forgot to add that shooter in video was shooting with lossless compressed raw + extra fine jpeg setting.

Thanks for the translation!!

In the 2nd half of the longer video do you know what RAW setting it was on? The Jpeg was changed to a lower quality looking at the LCD.

So I will likely shoot Compressed RAW to get a little bit longer burst at 30FPS...although I usually don't do much more than a couple seconds bursting at a time anyways. I like to do short bursts at peak action.

Wow. You are right. I thought it was same setting through all session but 2nd trial was actually compressed raw+standard jpeg.
