Wow. You are right. I thought it was same setting through all session but 2nd trial was actually compressed raw+standard jpeg.

Thanks...that makes even more sense that he was basically unlimited at 15FPS.

I think you're being sarcastic, but I have to say that this is the best-named camera on the market right now.

Q: "What camera are you using?"
A: "The One."

I will probably get one of these because... it's awesome. But I won't get its successor because the name won't be anywhere near as cool. "The One Two?" Nope.

It'd be called the Alpha Twelve (Alpha 12)

But coming from an A9 shooter, I am just here to say... Thank you Sony to keep pushing the envelope of camera technology.

Remember the day where when one flagship to the next gen, the increase was marginal like 0.5 or 1fps more, 1-2MP more... etc.

Sony came and showed the world how you REALLY do a new GEN flagship. A9 was groundbreaking when it was first announced. It broke many rules that EVERY camera before such as blackout, FF 20FPS with AF without extra battery grip.

Now the A1...

Don't forgot to thank Canon too. Sony pushed Canon with their mirrorless efforts and Canon in turn pushed Sony with the R5. Definitely a great time to be a consumer. The used camera market is going to be awesome in 2-3 years

Have you seen the overheating warning on the second video while the guy is taking the long 15fps burst?

Strange.. If it can record 30min of 8k video, it shouldn't overheat with 800 photos.

Unless it was "abused" with video recording before this test and it was hot already.

Or it is because it is a pre-production model.

Or the passive cooling system is activated only with video?

It could have been used a lot before this burst like you stated, but continous shooting probably is more demanding than 8k video. 8k video autofocus is probably less aggressive and the 8k video is not raw and is also compressed, so that means much less data being written to the card for video.

The good thing is that despite the warning it keeps shooting until the user probably gets bored

I wonder if someone has addressed using adapted lenses on this marvel. For example, Leica R lenses like the 100 Apo-Macro Elmarit 100 2.8 and other sentimental favorites. The A1 sensor seems to be well suited compared to the A7RIV because of the more forgiving high ISO behavior.

was the FSI a requirement to make stacked sensors, or maybe there'll be BSI+stacked sensors as the next evolution to finally make the DR jump?

I think you got that backwards, the stacked sensors from Sony are already BSI and I believe that is a requirement. We don’t know yet how good the DR is on the A1 sensor but I get the impression that Sony think it is improved over the A9 II.

It is. If you're going to stack two die on top of the diodes the light needs to come through the back. Here's a diagram and picture to give you some appreciation of the complexity and expense required for this low volume sensor.

I'm pretty sure that by definition, a passive cooling system doesn't get activated. Passive cooling is a fancy way of saying no fan. Its just designed with heat conductive materials that conduct the heat away to the body where the heat then radiates to the air.

I have a noob question, I will set the file format to lossless compression, in the very rare occasions when I put the drive mode dial at 30FPS, will the camera automatically overwrite the lossless compression format and change it to lossy compression because 30FPS can only give you lossy compressed files? I hope I won’t have to manually change the lossless compression format to lossy every time I want to use the 30FPS, and change it back to lossless afterwards.

Couldn’t you just set up custom modes with the two settings?

FWIW, I had previously mentioned that in Canada there was mention of a "Feb" release date. Today my dealer has confirmed with Sony that the Canadian release date for the A1 is March 4th. Same day listed by B&H.

34 days to go.....

Looks like that's the way to go. If Geoff's belief is correct that when the file format is set to lossless compression, it will shoot only 20 FPS even when the drive mode dial is set at H+, then the solution is pretty simple. I can set M1 for lossless and M2 for lossy, and leave the drive mode dial at H+, so with M1 I will get 20 FPS in lossless even though the drive mode dial is parked at H+, with M2 I will get 30 FPS in lossy. Like I said, the occasions when I would use 30 FPS are pretty rare but it's nice to have the feature.

I'm not sure if this was posted already but B&H mentions that 30fps will work only with G Master lenses:
"The other part is the forward-thinking engineering of G Master lenses. They have the proper motors to work at 30 fps. Unfortunately, it seems only the G Master series are able to support this speed. All other lenses will be limited to 20 fps."- https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/news/sony-announces-flagship-alpha-1-mirrorless-camera

B&H also said the Fuji GFX 100S sensor is "double the size of full frame." Well, that's what the guy in the B&H 100S announcement video said. He made some other bizarre mistakes. So, I wouldn't trust their information 100%.

I've now heard on a couple videos that the REC button can now be programmed as a Custom Button...YES....this is huge for me. I now have 3 back buttons on par with my R5. And the REC button has been moved out a little from how tucked in it is on the previous bodies so should be easy to find and easy to discern from hitting the AF-ON. Plus it is actually a decent sized button unlike the tiny, hard to feel R5 back buttons.

Here is Sony's Bird Eye-AF on an unsupported camera....if they can already do this on a system that doesn't support the feature, then I'm pretty sure this new Bird Eye-AF in the A1 is going to be mighty impressive.

Please excuse the shaky video, I'm basically resting the camera on shaky logs, operating it with one hand and shooting a video with my phone with my other hand

I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at? Is this animal-eye AF working on a bird or have you somehow managed to get some firmware that nobody else has? Or something else?

If you’re lucky the A9 II (I’m assuming A9 as well) will pick up a bird’s eye when you have animal eye AF turned on. It isn’t something you can rely on (at least I can’t) it’s just bonus when it does.

This is just A9II running normal Animal Eye-AF. It works on certain species but bird needs to really fill the frame. Most of the time I leave it turned off as I'm not often close enough to the birds to have it work. It also gives false positives on cross-hatched patterns and chequered patterns. But recently I've been leaving it on and seeing when it comes on and how it works when it does. A9 FW 6.0 should work about the same. I didn't find the A7RIV's Animal Eye AF to activate on birds as often.
