1080p120 is coming.

i was just thinking... the 4K @ 120 FPS is what video shooters would really jump at.
Especially since there is no option for 1080P @120 FPS
this will be a staple... so why would canon put it out and have pretty strong limitations on it.
meaning over-heat and then said recovery from excessive heat.

saw that video too...makes sense on a larger productions or higher budget work ( commercials/films/etc)

Then you give up the weather sealing... It's nearly difficult to keep the body size down, but yet provide enough air inside to help cooling, add weather sealing.

Doubt that ...

lol .. don't apply for the design job on that one.

Geez .. our house is mostly weather sealed and heat is transferred both ways for our HVAC system. And the material in the line stays in the coils and lines. It's just a matter of miniaturizing the matter. Doubt it would be cheap, and maybe not practical, but the key to success, is not handing the reigns to anyone who can't believe to get the job done.

It would be cool to see Canon try for an experiment, even if it didn't go into production.

Yes, your house is a great analogy for a camera that could be in any angle in a downpour and with a lens attached, and has all kinds of buttons and controls. I am sure if rain hit your house at all kinds of angles, you would still have a completely dry house with nothing seeping in anywhere, and that excludes the fact that you don't have a large opening that you stuff with something and hope the rains don't get in, or that you have all these huge buttons and wheels on your house (unless you live in a mobile home).

How big do you want that camera again, with a fan and space to run air with venting, etc?

No, the way to seal this is with heat dissipation on plates or transfer through a liquid in a closed system. It won't be with a fan and venting to circulate air through the camera, lol. There are many other thermodynamically superior methods.

Again, the overheating just isn't a big concern for many of us, if not most of us so it doesn't really matter what they could or couldn't do. Also, the manufacturing numbers are so low, that Canon will likely sell out of their initial productions regardless of this issue. I am sure you don't care about the overheating too, so for once we might be on the same page where we weren't at all on the R. This camera might actually be a good replacement for the 5D4 where the R wasn't for what I shoot.

Fine, but people should not whine about the “shortcomings” of the R5 as a video camera. It’s as good as you are going to get in a camera without heat sinks.

With the R5, I think Canon hit it out of the park!

They did. It’s far from perfect but it is closer to perfect than say the Sony A7R IV or A9.

Haha, I’ve been lurking in the background for quite a while, admiring the beautiful photos in the Nature & Wildlife and Landscape forum. Anyway, I have recently retired and it seems I’ve caught GAS.

I wonder how many are like me coming back to the gear forums because of the R5?
I haven't been this excited by new gear in a looong time.

Cheers,
Henrik

I left the Canon Forum about 8 years ago, but I am back and I am here to stay. Been resisting a move to Sony. I did own the Sony A7R II with 3 lenses ... twice, and got rid of it. Didn’t like the ergonomics, menu, etc. and just didn’t enjoy shooting with that camera.

The R5 is my kind of camera! Took Canon a loooong time to come out with a serious mirrorless camera.

Really impressive! the bird eye AF is fantastic, and kind of a game changer in some respects.

Yes .. it took a while. It was called the M series, one of the best selling mirrorless known.

Our son bought mine. The M5 was such a useful and practical camera, I almost bought another one but decided to stick with full frame that all use the same battery.

I still use a boring old non-video 1Ds3 but Canon refuse to make a successor.

So, any suggestions?

I agree—I sold my A9 to fund the R5.

That’s quite a brave move, as the jury is still out (we have to take the promo videos with a grain of salt) and we don’t know about the black-out and how the AF performs against the A9.

Having said that, even if it falls slightly short it will more than make up on the other specs, as no other camera can shoot at this speed in full 45mp, etc. And when it comes to ergonomics and handling, and probably also the menu, the A9 is just no comparison. I would have done the same thing.

Best advice ... switch to the R5. Mirrorless is the way forward and the RF line will be around for a looong time.

I agree about the taking the promo videos with a grain of salt—but some of the footage I saw (especially the 4K 120fps) convinced me their was alignment between specs and results. The R5 will make for an awesome B-Roll cam. Now add in the 8 stops of stabilization, better ergonomics, Canon colours, 45 MP stills, better menu system and that AF may not be quite to A9 performance isn't on the radar. What I do know is that AF performance will meet my needs and then some!

the list has been updated with all or most of the bigger video links.
the smaller animal testing was not cataloged.
pls tag me if you want anything added to the main list.

who is going to get one on Friday 7/31 or receive one Saturday 8/1, hopefully the big box stores use Saturday delivery. Not sure if UPS or Fedex is giving folks Saturday delivery for standard overnight shipments, sometimes that would mean a Monday delivery, with a Friday shipment.

cheers
