thoughts....
so the camera over heats. What is needed to fully reset the camera?
reset to 32°F? ::
This camera is meant to be a video camera for a somebody who wants to shoot video or a stills camera for a still shooter.
why does it have to be one or the other? so weird.
as far as 8K limitation.... somebody show me a high-end octa drone that flies longer than 30 minutes?
usually 20 minutes.
overall.... pretty weird for canon to create/sell a product where video (in this case) works only like a gimmick ... for a few minutes. Thinking 4K + over heating = dead camera.

I wish some of us still photographers could have saved 1000 bucks if video features were not there. It was still a great body. Now we will have to pay 1000 bucks more to buy what we won’t need.

Actually, maybe the opposite.
The R5 seems destined to be one of the best seller ever, maybe like the intro of the 5D mk ii.
But Canon at least added 8K. Possibly no other brand may ever find a way to put 8K in that small of a body in a sub-4K price. with much less operating time boundaries.
So the question is, will any other brand even try it? If not, it sets Canon apart at the only body with 8K .. except that exception also adapts to the greatest of all lens collections, plus IBIS, dual pixel, great ergonomics, and customer support unlike Olympus (hee hee)
I don't even shoot 4K. But I wouldn't call the 8K a gimmick until I see what others can do with it. One video guy who's video I posted yesterday, noted the R5 may be a great body to use for movie crash scenes where risking a unit 20 x more expensive is a worse option.

agree on the 8K .....
i was just thinking... the 4K @ 120 FPS is what video shooters would really jump at.
Especially since there is no option for 1080P @120 FPS
this will be a staple... so why would canon put it out and have pretty strong limitations on it.
meaning over-heat and then said recovery from excessive heat.
saw that video too...makes sense on a larger productions or higher budget work ( commercials/films/etc)

I'm happy they chose to keep the camera light, and deal with overheating in the extreme modes rather than choose to make the camera large in order to avoid it.
I don't think there is much point in a pissing match between Canon and Sony.

Bottom line ... the R5 is a photographer’s camera ... not a videographer’s camera. If you are a videographer get a video camera! Horses for courses. You cannot have your cake and eat it too.
Or go buy a Sony camera.
The R5 is a hybrid shooter's camera. In fact, it's the ultimate hybrid camera. I love to shoot video just as much as I love to shoot stills. It wasn't long ago on this forum that many criticized the R5 as being too video-centric.

well ....consumer products tend to be this way.
Like buying a blender and only wanting the high speed. bums me out i have to deal with pulse and other speed.
or buying a laptop and wishing i could save money on the integrated graphics chip/software because the laptop has a separate GPU.

Fine, but people should not whine about the “shortcomings” of the R5 as a video camera. It’s as good as you are going to get in a camera without heat sinks.

It's important to maintain perspective. Here's the interesting thing. Most of the complaints are coming from people who have not used the camera and seem to be irritated that Canon didn't send them one to try out.
Canon has also demonstrated great integrity in being as transparent as possible regarding these issues. Other companies have just allowed users to figure it out for themselves sometime later and don't own up to it.
Every other hybrid camera has video limitations of one kind or another, without an active cooling system. Canon is just being more transparent and up front about it. The Canon 1DX III has video recording limits but no one complained.
Then there's this: it's amazing that a camera this size has 8K RAW and you can record up to about 20 min. (Which BTW should be plenty for most types of video shooting.) As someone pointed out on another site, you know what the de facto 8K recording limit is for every other hybrid camera out there right now: zero. Nada. Zilch.
So sure some will complain. But at the end of the day this is a fantastic release and many people will make some great stuff with it.

Apparently posted this morning. The Polin-meister ...
As you do more reading more facts are coming out. How many expense CFast cards are you going to need to shoot an hr in 8K? The Fro said they should have promoted it as a revolutionary stills camera with a few new video features.
Canon has been doing this for a long time. Maybe they did it on purpose.

People online just like to complain. They literally complain about everything. That new Sony a7SIII...already the Sony people are complaining about only 12MP.
The problem is that some want "perfect" but the very definition of perfect at the time ends up being what solves the problems of the current equipment. So no one will ever be satisfied if that is their standard.
If someone wants the perfect camera they will wait forever. If someone wants a great camera then this is a great camera.
Canon delivered huge and I think the market will reward them...of course the market being what it is in the time of COVID-19 and limited travel.

Exactly, and why I posted yesterday about people whining because Canon didn't use a cripple hammer.
One thing that would be sort of cool though. Wonder if Canon could ever run a tiny cooling tube in the body that an add-on unit the size of a grip could super charge cooling. A cooling grip.
Then you give up the weather sealing... It's nearly difficult to keep the body size down, but yet provide enough air inside to help cooling, add weather sealing, then add some sort of air flow in addition to all of that. Canon would have to look at cycling cooling gel through the insides past the components that overheat and then spread that gel across something that could dissipate the heat elsewhere without burning the user.

The R5 is perfect for me. I may do small amounts of 4K or 8K video but it will be far below the limit for overheating and the rest of the camera is great for stills. I see no downside other than my having to buy cf express and a reader.
I am glad there is this issue. This means by Christmas, Canon will have some R5s on the refurb site from all those that got frustrated buying the R5 and overheating it.
