I watched the video and realized what BO was... Why didn’t they cover or discuss the blackout or lag behavior in e-shutter?

They were shooting in mechanical shutter, screen was set to 120 refresh... battery lasted 1 hour. I want to believe its better than that also... They did not test ES.

There are several power saving functions that we can turn on or utilize. Using 120 refresh is one of the power hungry options.
And knowing how much they love video, I'm sure that was used for a considerable amount of time.
I plan on using 120 myself but if the 60 works then I might use that for anything other than BIF. Not sure yet but hopefully I'll know by next weekend.

That's a good point Jesse.
I'm sure there will be more to come, I realize these testers are run and gun trying to out do each other.

Hmm, Chelsea is having trouble... blackout and tracking issues.

Chelsea is my new favorite bird photographer.... lol

Ouch. That lag shooting the kingfisher was painful to watch. I'm glad we have a 14 day return period if the R5 doesn't deliver.

The Northrups mentioned in the comments on youtube that it was still a problem with the RF 70-200.

I wasn’t able to find anything in there that they tested evf lag with that lens, they just said the dog shots were with it.

Guys - the 500 f4 IS mki they're using does not support 12 fps in H+ continuous mode and they're also using a 2x teleconverter, hence the blackout and lag. The 500 f4 is II is supported according to the manual. Don't jump to conclusions based on their 20 year old lens. They also didnt show the electronic shutter 20fps mode which doesn't have any blackout.

Also, just as an aside, when Chelsea said she switched to video and couldn’t record because of overheating, she didn’t say if she was using regular 4K or 4K HQ.

Additionally, in regard to highlight recovery, was Tony using DPP to process RAW images, or was he using another converter? Without the camera’s RAW files properly being supported by Lr and Capture One currently, it would be nice to know which editor he was using.

I find the Northrups make a lot of assertions without giving all the details.

This morning I decided to shoot my A9II in mechanical which is live feed with shutter blackout. It was totally fine and after a min adjusting to the blackout I found it less obtrusive than even the best 1series DSLR’s mirror blackout.

BO doesn’t bother me (I stink anyways ) it is lag that is a deal breaker for shooting fast BIF.

That video was just silly for them to post. This is why I do not hold much stock in the early videos. That was painful to watch. Use the most current gear to test the the newest camera period. Glad to see the older lens still work but I would not put out a video showing it. The Eos R is better than that in my hands. Now if the new lenses still have that same performance then Canon deserves what they get but for now that is a terrible video. Just a few more days and my own questions will be answered.

It would be in Canon's best interest to give people the information, so they can make an informed decision before spending money...

I don’t disagree. However, I was specifically referring to the “review” the Northrups put out. It’s a bit like DXO not providing their testing methods. When it comes down to it, it’s just useless information put out for clicks and subscribers.

B&H write about R5/R6 permanent but show RP most time, 5D MK IV, 90D and most of those pictures do not correspond with the text info.

That sounds like Tony and Cheslea's entire Youtube channel - clickbaity videos. At least Fro is somewhat objective in his tests.

Not sure how to link individual comments but it's a response to William Yuan's comment, I copy-pasted below:

The 500 f/4 mark i you're using is not compatible with 12fps in H+ continuous mode, the 500 f4 mark ii version is supported, according to the manual. That's why you have blackout and lag. Plus you're using a 2x teleconvertor.

We used just H mode. I didn't talk about the FPS in this video because we also tested the 70-200 f2.8 RF and that had a much higher FPS. Blackout and lag are the same, however.

The view finder Lag may be down to using an EF lens. On EOS R the “best” view finder performance in continuous shooting is only available with RF lenses ( remember reading in manual) . I imagine is same in R5 and R6. Will be interesting to see what like with 100-500

No same issue with the 70-200 RF... But regardless there are no RF fast teles

Haven't watched all of the TN video but just made it to the 1:18 mark where he shows a kingfisher sequence...no where near Sony A9 performance but I understand that the old 500 and a 2xTC isn't "fair" like Tony points out.

However, I basically turned the video off at the 1:19 mark after Tony claims the Kingfisher shots were in focus, zooms into one frame and the shot is so OOF I wouldn't even need to go 1:1 in order to hit the "X" key in LR....maybe I'll watch the rest later but seriously, this better not be the performance with a newer EF lens or RF lens and Tony needs glasses.
