Yes, that’s true - I have no problem panning using either MS or ES. If there’s frame insertion going on it’s irrelevant to me; the pan looks fine, and I don’t lose my subject while tracking.
EDIT:
The lenses I’ve now used with no appreciable lag are:
RF 85 f/1.2L
EF 600mm f/4L II with & without the 2x III
EF 300mm f/2.8L II
EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II

Should we take that to mean there is no blackout?
Many have reported no blackout. I have not read one person saying there is. Mechanical shutter has some jitter but reports say it is insignificant. Nothing like the R.

There's always blackout using mechanical shutter. That's just a fact of life since the shutter has to open and close.
Blackout is no worse than any DSLR I've ever used. It's perfectly manageable, and in my opinion, shouldn't hinder anyone tracking action.
For ES, there is no blackout. My concern was frame insertion. What I'm saying, with regard to the R5, is that if frame insertion is happening it's negligible. Again, in my opinion, users of the R5 should have no trouble tracking their subjects.

I personally know Ron, (the reviewer) if he says something, you could pretty much count on it. He knows what he is doing when it comes to wildlife.
Thanks for the feedback. He obviously knows his stuff. His work is impressive to say the least. Please give him my regards for his impressive work and his down to earth well thought out review.

I should have been more specific. No blackout beyond the shutters normal function. I consider that a known so I forget to mention it.

Well if that kind of distortion is what you're looking for, why not just stay with Sony then.
It does look kinda pretty in an abstract kind of way.
Seriously though. You say "not to cherry pick the extended wing position" and yet you are specifically looking to "cherry pick" for the worst. Is there something special about humming bird pictures with their wings pointed straight out that you find especially pleasing? My preference is to see them in the up or down position for more details and mass.
I think you need to step back and look at the big picture here Geoff. Don't get hung up on the A9II read speed and think it's some kind of gift of the gods and the only way ANY MILC can achieve fast action photos. The results and reports we are seeing from the R5 are proof that that is not the case at all.
From my first hand experiences with the R5, I can honestly say that if you can't track fast BIF and keep it in the frame due to it's slower than A9II read speed, the camera is not the problem.
I really wish you hadn't have gotten cold feet when you canceled your R5 order. I was looking forward to hearing your first hand thoughts on it in comparison to the vast collection of other bodies you have used. I know you'll be picking one up someday, but by then it'll be old news. ...Show more →
All I'm looking for is more data. I know what I'm looking for and it is just to make a comparison between what I know/shoot now and what the differences would be shooting the R5 instead. I've said a few other times that mid-wing positions aren't usually ones I'd choose, it is just a good reference in comparing between known fast reads and known slow reads that I own already. Gives me some guidance about where the R5 falls on the spectrum overall. That is all I'm looking for.
And in no way have I said that I need A9 read speeds to shoot fast BIF, I do it all the time with slow-arse A7RIV and DSLRs which are a total different game. But when comparing between systems like I like to do this type of information is important to me.
Also, I understand that current Canon shooters really have no need to be comparing to the A9. If they didn't switch to an A9 over the past 3 years, I see no reason they'd be looking at an A9 now? For most of you it won't matter how it compares to an A9 anyways. But if I'm deciding between staying with my A9, dumping my A9 or shooting both then for sure I'm going to want to compare.
If I didn't also have to buy a $4-5K lens in addition to the R5 then I'd have kept my order in. I'll shoot it eventually, maybe own it, maybe just shoot Pius' or other guys I know that may be getting one.

It's no problem! I was just responding to IndyFab's question.
But as to your question: there is no blackout beyond the normal shutter function. You'll be able to track Kingfishers, or any other fast moving subject, with ease using the R5.
Yes, and once again that OP totally ignored my post on there asking for intermediate wing positions. I did only post a few hours ago but he has subsequently replied to a number of posts after mine and totally ignored my question. Oh well...once again I'll have to do the leg work myself...what else is new?

That is what I got out of it as well. In the R's power saving menu you can disable VF off. I disabled both the VF and Power Off and the LCD to shut off in 15 seconds. With the LCD active the VF woke up right away. After the LCD shut off there was a delay even with the VF off disabled. Looks like I'm getting extra batteries.
I don't like the sound of the delay but I don't need to be flipping my screen in either. What I would like to know is if I shut off Auto sensor between LCD/EVF and run the camera with a programmed button to switch between EVF/LCD does the EVF shut off still when I drop it down from my eye (leaving the LCD off also, but not flipping the LCD inwards) and then do we get that same wake-up delay in the EVF when I bring it back to my eye. Or does the EVF actually just stay on all the time if I am manually switching between the two? Which would eliminate the delay but waste battery.

That was what I was waiting to hear after the R5 was released. It was my biggest concern after a year with the R. It is why I missed out last week. I was at the top of the list but I wanted to put a lens on it and test it for blackout/lag, which my dealer would have let me do. They expected several but only received two. Two other customers wanted them outright so I can't blame the dealer. Then the user reports started to come out the next day. Might be a blessing as I learn more about it and I might get the 100-500 at the same time. I'll get the whole experience. They told me the next shipment would be in about 2 weeks but I'm not holding my breath.

It was my biggest concern too. However, after seeing the 1DX Mark III's performance in live view, I figured I'd take a leap of faith. I also sold my 1DX Mark II earlier this year, and desperately wanted something replace it with. Still, though, it was a lot of money to gamble with, but figured I could get rid of the camera right away if it was a dud, or possibly even return it to The Camera Store (they have an excellent return policy). I'm happy to report that the camera has exceeded my expectations so far. The only downside for me is that with the job I have, and with a new wife as well as a new puppy, my time is not my own right now -- it's difficult for me to get out and take the kind of photos I want to. I've basically resorted to just walking down to our local provincial park bike path when I have a few moments in the evening with my 600mm hoping something interesting turns up.
Anyways, I digress. I think you'll enjoy the camera. I think wildlife and sports shooters will be very pleasantly surprised once they get their hands on the R5. It has the speed of a 1D, and it has close to the same resolution as the 5DsR. It's a winning combination, in my opinion.

Finally someone taking 2 seconds out of their day to provide helpful information....
The rolling shutter distortion when using the electronic shutter is overwhelmingly better than the α7R IV. Even if I took a fan, the feathers remained. It's not as much as α9, but probably at a level where you don't have to worry about train or car window distortion. It seems to be usable normally. In this situation, even with a mechanical shutter, it is a rather severe condition where it is slightly distorted.

I only have the R but the R5 manual is the same. Yes you can select the M-fn to toggle between the VF and screen. No delay.
It is odd that with the VF off and Power off disabled the VF still shuts off when the Display shuts off. I tried several combinations (plus Eco mode) and I cannot get the EVF to stay on after the Display shuts off. No matter which combo I tried the VF shuts off after the Display shuts off and the delay is still there. I even set the timers so nothing shuts off, turned the EVF sensor off and set it to VF. The VF still shuts off after about 10 seconds.
An update. I don't want to mislead anyone. I am seeing a delay in both auto or manually switching between the VF and Display. However in the VF I see the scene and when I activate the Display I get the Q screen. I'm working on it.
I set the power settings so nothing shuts off. The VF sensor is disabled and manually set to the VF. The VF still shuts off after about 6 seconds but it seems to wake up fairly quickly when I bring it to my eye. Maybe someone can verify this?
The reason for delay switching back and forth I think is because getting the Q screen on the Display and the scene in the VF. If I'm getting the Q or menu screens between Display and VF it is fast. I'm still tying to text what happens when I get the actual scene working in both.

With the above settings if you press the shutter or BBF before raising it to your eye the VF will be fully awake by the time you get it there. With my previous settings where the display and power shut off after short period or time there was still a delay by the time I got it to my eye. Lighthound suggested to do that but there was still a delay.
Even better. I taped a piece of black electrical tape to the EVF sensor. It still shut off. Then taped it from one edge of the eyecup to the other it stayed on indefinitely. It needs about ¼ inch gap. I put it on when I started this post and it is still on.

If I see the scene in both the VF and Display switching back and forth is instant.
