Thanks for asking about a way to toggle back and forth between the Display and EVF manually. I'm sure I tried it when I first got the R. I normally try everything out but never connected it to how fast the EVF wakes up. This is going to change how I shoot BIF. I'm going to fool around with that taping the EVF sensor method. I might design something I can attach/detach quickly if I like using it. I don't care if it keeps running. As long as the EVF is awake by the time I get it to my eye. About half the time I forgot to push a button to wake the R up. After decades of having instant view with an OVF pressing a button was a hard paradigm to break.

Yeah it was a hard habit for me to break also with the Sony and Nikon MILCs I own. I used to have the Sony sleep and had to try and remember to tap the shutter as I was raising to my eye to reduce the lag. I now have found a workaround and my Sony is set to never sleep the camera but it does shut off the EVF (and not turn on the LCD) when my eye is away from the EVF sensor. Doing it that way makes it basically instant when I bring my eye up. If I let the camera sleep it is sloooowwww...Nikon is even worse.

Thanks. I have seen that video and it was very good over all. That particular clip also led me to experiment. I like to have access to the Q screen so I'll have the screen open. With the LCD active I found a bit of a delay when brought it to my eye, the sensor detected my face and it flipped over. Pressing the a button to wake the EVF up is faster IMO, but that is with the R, not the R5. The camera itself can't be powered down for that to work. Pressing a button to wake it and the EVF up causes a delay.
Also the LCD is not running all of the time which would save on battery power. As for my wacky idea of the EVF running all of the time I'm not sure how much difference it would make between it and the LCD running all the time. We did discuss EVF battery drain and were surprised by how much power it used. There is always the 60fps refresh rate.
I'll have lots of time to play around and find what works best for me. All I know is I want absolutely zero delay by the time look in the EVF. If I need to press a button to make this work I'll keep at it. Now that I figured out how get past any delay I'll have more incentive to do it.
According to this video, e-shutter on the R5 seems to be better than the 1DX III (marginally). Already inferred based on the R6, but still, nice to see a field test. Crazy that they can move all this data off so fast. The DigicX performance bodes well for Canon's future systems..

How can you tell which examples were what? It sounded like mechanical shutter at the 11 second mark. It was hard to tell at the 4 second mark. It may have been e shutter but the train was load.
I was on those trains last November going past Mt. Fuji to Kyoto and back to Tokyo. It was a rush

This fellow translated this. I'm finding it a little hard to understand. They are claiming 16ms but then 10ms for HD. What is the readout speed when not shooting video? I guess it is 16ms?

Here are some more concrete sensor scan numbers but these are all for different video modes. I would assume that the R5 FF readout for stills is the same as 8K at 16ms. However we can't really tell from the R6 video numbers as the R6 has no video mode that scans the entire sensor. Seems all we have on the R6 is the off hand mention of 19ms in the DPReview video. But it does scan at 16ms in its 5.1K readout down to 4K. So it maybe could be as fast as that with the full sensor or maybe the 19ms makes sense when scanning that extra amount.
I am most interested in what the APS-C R5 scan time is. Estimates seem to be 10ms from shooting light sources and counting bands. Still waiting for someone like Jim Kasson to confirm with his accurate tests.

Just for comparison, DPReview has measured the upcoming A7SIII scan speeds and they are getting 8.7ms in the 60p modes, 7.7 in 4K120 and 7.8 in 4K with Steady Shot active. They say the full sensor scan is 8.3ms, just shy of 1/120 requiring the slight crop in 120 modes.
So I guess the stills will likely be 8.3ms which would then be the 2nd fastest camera to date behind the 1/160 (6.25ms) A9(II).

Keep in mind EVF/LCD lag is a function of the full image-processing chain time rather than just readout speed. In fact readout speed represents a fractional percentage of that total time. The process of getting data from the sensor to the EVF/LCD involves the sensor read, demosaicing, noise reduction, lens correction, tone curve, and picture profile application.

Yes, for sure, I understand that there are more factors going into the lag and blackout. I think the discussion had just morphed a bit into the rolling shutter sensor scan times so I had just been trying to scour the internet for better data on rolling shutter risks with the new breed of cameras.
