What constitutes a bad copy? I took mine out the day after I got it and shot portraits. Loved the rendering, although there was distortion on the edges of the frame.

I'd be curious, too, although that 2mm equates to a relatively significant (about 6 degrees) difference in field of view. I'd be equally curious to see them side by side because they're about the same size just different proportions -- the Batis is shorter but fatter (and lighter).
I bought my Batis when it was on sale for $899 a few months back, but I would have preferred to spend that same amount of money on the 20mm because I think it would be more fun to play with shallower DoF in an urban environment.

I think some lenses are technically slightly wider than their official focal lengths to account for automatic lens correction being applied and chopping off some of the frame

I have the 24mm GM that I love but still am gassing for the 20mm 1.8. Enough of a difference? My gas says yes but I am still saying no. Plus I also have a 16-35 F4. Sadly sometimes my gas wins any rational argument though.

I've just got a well centered copy of the 20/1.8G and will test it against the 14-24/2.8, Loxia 21 and 24/1.4GM as soon as the rain stops.
My initial reaction is that there is visible astigmatism towards the corners which look great starting at f/4. Negligible field curvature, low CA and very sharp at center starting at f/2.8.

Yes, on my tests I focused on the center and then looked at the corners, re-focused using the corners and then looked at the center wide open and saw hardly any difference in focus at all.
Yes, astigmatism in the corners, as per the MTF charts, but it's not that bad for non-point sources of light.

With distortion corrections off (and thus some pincushion distortion, not a lot), I measured an implied focal length of 19.5mm at a distance of ~6m, using the vertical field of view so distortion would not be too much of a factor. Once distortion is corrected I don't think the focal length will be much different from 20mm. I'm confident it is not an 18mm lens or a 22mm lens.
